  • love this tune go Johnny what an epitath :) xx

  • What we need now is Michael back! We need his leadership and skill. His intelligence and courage and everything that made him the greatest Irishman to ever live and ever will live!

  • he blasted the 4 courts , i can send the footage to whoever want its , i have commented on this subject before and got blasted from friends of mine , i pointed out that the civil war never realley ended, and we fought about it , sound familiar ?

  • @franreilley

Yes he attacked the four courts, to prevent the IRA there from sparking a war with England they could not win.

  • @mst3k4evur , oh so he killed irishmen with british guns as a favour to the anti-treaty rebels , the 4 courts rebels were fighting for what they had originally fought for , collins was fighting against his former comrades after he signed the treaty , and dont forget the fsa was loaded with tans, british soldiers and loyalists , seems everyone except collins knew the fsa was just another british regiment fighting against irish republicans ,

  • @franreilley

Yes, he attacked them-after months of negotiations had failed. What was Collins alternative? Wait until the IRA got the British to reinvade and fight a losing guerrilla war for a few years?

I don't know about Black and Tans, but much of the IRA joined the Free State Army. Even Richard Mulcahy had fought for the IRA and the IRB in 1916. In fact, most of the Irish people wanted the war to end, which the IRA ignored.

And Sony O'Neil, who shot Collins...was a former British soldier!

  • @mst3k4evur , the 4 courts was taken because collins settled on an agreement that stopped short of a republic ,you know that , mulcahy was a traitor bastard who got what he deserved along with that bastard o higgins the man who personally signed the murder warrant for his best man,Rory O'Connor ,

  • @franreilley

Once again, what was Collins' alternative?

As for the executions, they took place after Collins was assassinated. He allowed no executions and constantly sent out offers of peace without imprisonment to the IRA leaders. By killing him they guaranteed their further alienation from the Irish people and their own eradication by mass execution.

  • @mst3k4evur , not signing the teatey, the british government should have acepted the will of the vast majority of the people living in ireland , an irish republic , end of story , the majority wanted it and collins helped divide the republicans by accepting a sham free state , did you read the treaty , the freestate government had little control over any ports , the freestate government had maintenance power , as much control as a teenager should be allowed to have with his / her parents house

  • @franreilley

The Brits were not going to do that in the 20's. They only did that in the 40's and 50's because they were exhausted and bankrupt from two world wars.

Yes, I've read the treaty. It was the best he could get.

Had he refused to sign the treaty the Brits would have invaded the South and he would have been forced to return to war with an exhausted IRA, short on ammunition and members. Best case scenario he would have lasted another decade before the last IRA units were destroyed.

  • @mst3k4evur , i also read the treaty and i believe it was a joke , it gave no real independence , i also dont believe the nonsense of starting in cork and killing everything that moved until they reached derry , if it could be done they would have done it before then ,

  • @franreilley

You've yet to suggest an alternative. Unless Republicanism can solidify into ammunition and new members then the IRA could not go on fighting.

Had the British known how weak the IRA was, they would have gone on fighting. It would have collapsed as soon as 1922.

  • @mst3k4evur , the alternative was not signing the treaty , the ira was weakened by the formation of the FSA , the IRA ranks were scarcily manned and poorly armed when the war of indo broke out but they armed and manned , they would have kept going if the truce wasnt called by the exhausted british , after the burning of the customs house they were told by one of their generals to go all in or get all out , they would have given up soon after the truce was refused

  • @franreilley

There are some problems with your assumptions:

The Brits could have put upwards of 100,000 into Ireland easily. They could have worn the IRA down long before they would have had to quit. Why do this? Because if they granted a united Ireland total independence it would have risked the rest of the empire. The many different independence movements would have watched Ireland and copied the strategy used by the IRA to win their freedom. The Brits would never allow that to happen.

  • @mst3k4evur , then why did they call a truce rather than eliminate the irish menace once and for all if it was such aneasy task?

  • @franreilley

Who said easy? It's massively expensive and unpopular and guarantees another rebellion within a few decades. But it's easier to reconcile brutalizing a country on their doorstep than losing the whole of the empire.

  • @franreilley

As for keeping the IRA going by bringing in more arms, that was nearly impossible. Most of the guns and ammunition were acquired before the war, once fighting starts security is tight enough that supplies coming in from the US and elsewhere slows to a trickle. That's why the IRA was so short of ammunition by 1921.

  • @mst3k4evur , most was stolen in raids , little was bought before 1919

  • @franreilley

If that's true, then why was the IRA critically short of ammunition in 1921? Why were the men at the custom's house sent out with a few rounds per pistol?

Taking arms and ammo in guerrilla attacks is harder than you think as attacks like the one in Killmichael are rare. Most of the time, the volunteers never got close enough to grab ammo, they would just pop up, take a shot and run. Sound guerrilla tactics.

  • @franreilley

Also, why would the Brits break and run after a few years if the Provos couldn't kick them out of the north after a quarter of a century?

  • @mst3k4evur , the provos were 50 years later , how could anyone make a decision based on a future event

  • @franreilley

My point is that they couldn't force out the British in 25 years when the Empire was falling apart. Why would the early IRA be able to kick them out completely in just 3 or 4 years?

  • what a waste off a good man .r i p

  • i'm english but that man was a hero fuck de valera!!! Micheal you a hero!!!!

  • A wonderful song about a wonderful brave man of Ireland, who knew he would be probably killed for his decision to sign the Treaty. He had no choice in this matter, so was actually between a rock and a hard place.

His grave in Glasnevin is covered in flowers always !

  • think of the p----k who went on to lead the country.Only good thing to come out of cork.!

  • @eamonn8865 There may have been a few outhers.. McCurtain, Mc Sweeney, Thomas Ashe... the Delaney Brothers and so many outhers..,Plus .'Tom Barrys Flying Columns'..... [General Tom Barry although born inCounty Kerry his heart was with the men of the Column].....Killmichael and much later the engagement by same at Crossbarry were seen prime moments in our struggle with Empire...so many great men and events did come out of Cork....

  • this murder can be sorted out in days with new forensic evidence but the irish goverment dont want to know why god bless you big fella they are still scared of you in death jfk glasgow

  • Love to hear this my great uncle Andrew Comerford fought in 1916 rising in Jacobs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dornoable my great grandfather was in the IRA in the war of independence. They ambushed and killed a few RIC men in Connaught. Cool to hear your great uncle was in the 1916 rising though, the revolution that changed Irish history!

  • fuck any1 who has sumthin bad to say about this heroic man

he was a true son of eire we don't get men like him anymore..he won us 26 countys now all we need to do is to secure the other 6 from british rule..de valera tried 2 make a mockery of this man..he was a fuckin scumbag who shud hav been shot instead of collins

R.I.P MICHAEL COLLINS G.B.N.F TRUE SON OF EIRE

  • He is my hero!

  • went to see the site in 1997. I am not irish born -just descended of irish parentage. God Bless this man's soul. I am sure he had the whole of Irelands best in his eyes.

Please let the whole of this country be happy. You are blessed with the best of everything.

  • gloria à té Michale Collins corsica people

  • gloria à té Michael collins corsica people

  • Traitor who shot his own country men no matter what he did during the tan war this will be his legacy...

  • Why do people put this man on a pedestal? Sure he did great things during the tan war but he executed fellow comrades during the civil war this is inexcusable and make him a traitor no matter which way you look at it.

  • @snoxyy Michael Collins was not perfect but he was the best Ireland ever haad and probably the best they ever will have. you call him a traitor well guess what Ireland is mostly free and he was responsible for that and if you dont like it you can thank de Valera for him leaving the country and parading around america so he could be recognized. the only thing i dont like about him is that he was killed by his own men and he couldnt take the north.

  • God bless Michael Irelands greatest son

  • mcevoy i find that kind of funny because my mothers mothers madin name is evoy and my gramother says if you go to ireland and you find somone named mcevoy the might be my cousin....not very likly but you never know.

  • An emotional song about a great man, a real hero, who died for Ireland,an awful day, dreadful happening.

  • What a country Ireland could have been if he was not murdered. Fianna Fail = fucks.

  • @jarsonist sorry but you dont know much about irish politics.

  • you Irish have many commons with us greeks....we both have someone over us....a supreme power in both cases....and we both kick this power in the ass out of our country....but this cant happen in a decade it took 400 years to greek sent turks where they came from....I love irish people. I love your culture and your beautiful country. been there 4 times till today....I soon come to live there for the rest of my life.... We sent our greatest hero of our revolution to root in prison

  • after the war was won...never forget never forgive and never regret. If it was in my hand... I could join any team that stand as IRB and IRA back then againist england in our days. Carry on and one day you shall have your complete freedom.

  • Michael Collins, Heart and Soul of Ireland. Then, Now and ALWAYS!

  • de valera you traitor

you killed the greatest irishman ever

    because he eclipsed you

  • God Bless the Big Fella.

  • A wonderful brave man, who is worshipped and rightly so !

  • he was the Irish Crazy Horse! brave in war, then cut down by traitors!

  • Was he shot from behind?

  • TheODubhtaigh.........who? Crazy Horse? no, he was grabbed by a soldier and a turncoat scout and another soldier put a bayonet in his back. it seems there was a translation mix up. US army wanted him to work as a scout against the Nez Perce in 1877. after that it gets hazy. something scared him, he tried to back away. but they grabbed him. sad for a brave one to be cut down from behind by a coward!

  • @TheODubhthaigh

Yes, he was, in his OWN COUNTY.

  • "There are two kinds of Irish bars in Chicago: the ones that serve Guinness and sometimes, if they're feeling adventurous, play some Irish music besides Flogging Molly; and the ones with framed portraits of Irish patriots behind the bar"...and this song on the speakers.

  • @typacsk

The same in St Louis. God forbid they play Irish Republican music in an Irish pub.

  • Nigo82

No way!! Collins was a hero. End of debate. He didn't want to go london. He was sent there by De Valera. God bless you Michael!!

  • @Nigo82 Well said, MIchael Collins was sent to his death, by signing the Treaty, but he knew, and still made the sacrifice !

  • @Nigo82 History tells us..he turned british ammunition on his fellow Irishmen.

Ireland at the time was british influenced to a Tee.

If we look back it was such a tragedy.. Up The Republic.

  • @FreedomSaoirse There were over twohundred and fifty civilian deaths during the Assault of the Four Courts mostly due to the Shelling in such a built up area.. Obviously the Free State Forces saw that the killing of families was as a small price to be payed rather than a long drawn out siege of same...What with the offer of a loan of 18 Pounders from Churchill.. Collins truly had the blood of his Countrymen on his hands and the British were again playing the Cards of Divide and Rule...

  • @Nigo82 Well said, long live the big man !

  • He had no choice but to sign or face a 'terrible war' words spoken to him by the British govt of the time. it was a terrible position to be in !

  • well done mick....RIP

  • Wonder if Gerry and Martin will get the bullet from angry rebs just like Collins did?

  • hiya jo...ah lovely bit of history in words bout the big fella himself

  • This is the best of the Michael Collins Ballads I've heard. Is there better?

  • In one word - NO !

This version is very beautiful !

  • Wonderful song about a brave brave man who was forced to sign a Treaty that he knew would prob lead to his own death warrant, and I believe he was shot by a republican sniper who was apposed to theTreaty.

  • Unified32 - what are your thoughts on where we are headed - do you think that the Irish problem as the media loves to call it will lead to Civil War in the north if the GFA 'majority vote reunification' is ever fulfilled?

  • If and when that day comes, I do believe that a civil war is a very distinct possibilty. If the loyalist feel they have been "abandoned" by their Brit overlords and they don't feel that the New Ireland they were heading into had their interests in mind then the possibilty of civil war and at the very least Community barricading and self policing would be very likely

  • @Unified32 m8 do u really believe those cowardly secterian bigots would have the guts to start a civli war without the british amys help lolol... dont make me laugh ;) they only like killing innocent catholics ;( with ofc the back up of the brits ... but those days are gone .. and they will soon fit into a new ireland ;) secterian cowards can easilly change their ways ;)

  • @Unified32 The loyalistcan go to England if they love the crown so much.

  • grumpoldbug - there are actually 3 counties of Ulster in the ROI not 2. The 'Ulster' I am describing is a new Independent Ulster. Only 2 counties. Not annexing more of the ROI.

  • And why should the British pay for your idea of new utopia? And tell me how you could even sell it to the natives of these here parts??

  • grumpoldbug - you seem to have gotten the wrong end of the stick. As a Falls Road (ie County Antrim) Catholic nationalist the ideas I speak of are not utopia but probably armageddon for I don't think that too many Catholics caught in the 2 counties I mentioned will be let off lightly as the Protestant exodus to these 2 counties gathers pace. I describe the end of the world for me/my family - not heaven, but hell. I have already given the reasons why the British WOULD pay. Who are the natives?

  • So you reduce it to pathetic religious squabling and segregation! Very good, we have already tried that one! Best you go and look up the word native!!!!

  • The British govt could say that they were bending to the will of the majority of the people in the UK in the face of predictions of pandemic civil unrest (Loyalists will probably ask for the help of citizens - ex army especially - in the rest of the UK which is becoming increasingly Nationalistic). A nationwide UK pan workforce strike will be enough to force the govt's hand to grant 'provisional stay of annexation status' to the two counties mentioned.

  • Another partition is a real possibility. The longer the war on terror goes on and more 'Ulster' protestants die the more likely that the Good Friday agreement will be altered (down the line) in gratitude to them, to create such an Independent Ulster (2 counties, Down and Antrim) if the majority of Protestants do not want to be part of a reunified Ireland. Which they wont !! Look at Luxembourg - under 500,000 population and smaller than the two counties I mentioned above, yet it exists

  • That is indeed a distinct possibility. Personally I think if it did go that way, this new state my not even encompass the whole of Antrim and Down. It could literally be a strip down the north east coast finishing at North Down and the Ards Penninsula

  • Unified32 - I agree that amount of land would be enough to be called Independent Ulster for if Ulster has many interpretationsincarnations then this could be another - if only to preserve the Protestant/Unionist version of Ulster. As I said, Luxembourg is also a small entity with an even lesser population yet it survives and even thrives at times.

  • @AnEclecticMusicFan What a load of shite. The only way to end people opposing british rule in Ireland is by granting a 32 county republic

  • Very beautiful song as always!

  • Great Song

  • An Independent Ulster may be suited to Britain also. It may only consist of 2 1/2 counties and they will be the counties in the east,north-east and south-east, (Antrim, Down, part of Derry) but these counties will have the best ports and air-ports and may prove a viable (yet even more heavily subsided) state. I can't imagine the British people allowing any future PM let 'Ulster' people be absorbed against their wishes given the strength of the connection especially military being forged in Iraq.

  • Who will pay for it??

  • I really believe that the UK will pay for that Independent Ulster (perhaps also the US who view that coastline as strategic).

  • What is strategic about Northern Ireland?? Remember that two counties of Ulster are in the ROI, i think its people may have something to say about your plan...and again, I do like the way you totally ignore the will of the majority!

  • If MC was a "traitor" What does that make dev? He sent a soldier to do a politicians job when he knew full well that MC would take the blame if people disagreed. It was said at the time it was a stepping stone to Irish frredom and dev and his followers ended all hope of a free Ireland by murdering MC on that fateful day. If the big fellow lived who know's what he might have acheived, But dev couldn't handle him becoming bigger than himself.

  • Ther is no doubt that Dev was a traitor tooanyone who kills fellow Republicans to further thier own gain are traitors. But lets not forget MC DID IT TOO. You can't guess what he would have done or achieved you can only judge him by what he did during the civil war which was kill fellow Republicans and we can only be glad he got his just rewards for the bombing of the four courts and other atroticities the free staters carried out whilst he was thier commander in chief Dev deserved the same too

  • excellent!! TAL

  • Traitor obviously, he sold out the six counties by signing that treaty he did NOT have to sign it who said it was an unwinnable war the world was watching britain and its cruel tactics at that time . You can be rest assured Lloyd George and co were on the rocks when they were looking peace talks. Alls collins did was consign another 3000+ people in the north to death by splitting the country in 2.Its easy to sit in the safety of the south and call him a hero try living up here in the occupied 6

  • only for mc who knows what ireland would be like to day .if he had not signed that treaty who knows were we would be today. if collins hadent had split the country in two most likley 33000 people would have had died and there would have been no safe place in ireland.

i say he is a hero? R.I.P MICK COLLINS ....

  • I have to agree with you there aidantim. There may have been 33000 or more deaths had partition not happened. But there still could be such a death toll in the future! If (some say when) there is a majority of people in Ireland (north and south) who want reunification I don't expect may Protestants to 'go willingly' if you will - even though it may be one of the mainstay's of the Good Friday Agrement that reunification MUST occur in such circumstances. I think they will go for Independent Ulster

  • M C was damned if he did, and damned if he didn't. He was between a rock and a hard place. The Brit Gov on one hand -Lloyd George, and W Churchill, and De Val eera sent him, and he knew what would come, if he didn't sign, and he also knew what would come if he did. The position was impossible, and he dealt with it as best he could !

  • Hero or Traitor. The question has been asked for many years. In my veiw MC is one of the greatest hero's in Irish history. As people have said a military genius and true patriot, The treaty he signed stopped an unwinnable war and therefor saved many lives. Rest in Peace Michael. You will never be forgotten.

  • Well said, what a position to be in. My husband and I visited Michael Collins grave in Glasnevin Cemetery this week while on holiday in Dublin, and I was able to place a flower amomg the hundreds of others on his grave, it was a very moving moment for me. This is such a beautiful song !

  • well said my friend !!

  • Pro or anti treaty, I think everyone will agree Mick did the only thing he could do to save our country from a terrible war which we had no hope of winning. I think he also knew the price he himself would pay. A genius of war, but a great human-being and a true Irish hero

  • This song is so beautiful, I took several photos of Michael Collins grave last week in Glasnevin Cemetery, his grave was vovered in vases of flowers and I put 1 more in. There was a lovely wreath on there at the foot of the grave, and it was a wonderful moment.

  • impressive...what a wunderful song...for a great man...

  • What is bay on the bloor ? I love this song as I am a huge Irish fan !

    Answers please

    Norfolk UK

  • in reply to josparkes comment .

    it actually beal na blaith

it the name of the place where he was killed.its in cork

but yes its a classic song

  • Yes I have seen Beal na blah is it ? you have given me the gaelic/irish which is good, thanks.

This sonng is just WOW, great singing !

  • My word this is a really beautiful song, so sad, it's awful to think what happened here !

    Love it.

    Norfolk UK

  • This song is so incredibly beautiful, it's just magical and so fitting to MC !

  • Wonderful song and so sad !

    Norfolk UK

Irish ancestry and the treaty was not signed with a free will.

  • The men who done the ambush say they didnt know collins was in the convoy. Many who were even near there got a bad time all there lives because people blamed them. One of them killed himself and another was haunted throughout his life and swore he would not have killed collins. Very sad issue. He was not a traitor, no, no way, he made a bad choice in my opinion, but he made that choice because he believed it was do good and he wanted to get back the six, unlike his successors.........

  • anybody know where i could download or purchase this song?i'd really appreciate it.

  • The name "The big fellow" was coined by Dev. Collins was a noted show-off and a poser for photographs. Thus the name "The big fellow"

  • what kinda shit are you talking about . there wasnt 1 known picture of michael collins till after the treaty.when of course dev the traitor turned on mick for bringing back the the very thing that dev knew was all that was on the table. you fucking muppet

  • Shut up !

  • Aye! Collins was gone, but DeValera had the responsibility to attempt to carry Ireland forward for another sixty years.I wonder would Michael as a womaniser and a show-off have been able for the sixty year haul? I do not think so.

  • I don't get you,you seem to side with Ireland above, then you run down Michael Collins to the lowest, why bother to listen to this beautiful song and then denigrate this hero ?

Norfolk UK, but of Irish ancestry, and against injustice !

  • what a song its in all our blood

  • Aye, the big fella was a hero all right and that makes dev the baddie.

I reckon there was good in them both.

    Respect from this Bear!

  • i agree,coulndnt been easy

  • Is this McDermott singing (formerly of the Irish Tenors). It sounds like him to me, but I'm not sure.

  • Im from tyrone and I think Collins was a hero iv studied A-Level Irish History, and he didn't sell out, there was nothing he could do. there are many factors that resulted in partition, partition was on the cards since 1912 after the Agar Robartes amendment was suggested. No one person can take the blame for partition

  • De Valera was scum, yes scum and that is what my Grandmother told me from County Mayo. God Bless you Sir Collins and burn in Hell De Valera, you scum.

  • Sir Collins? Thats as big an insult to the Big Fella as his own fateful remark was to Markievicz and are you, by association saying she is scum as well? I am very sad that you see fit to us that term!

  • You love collins eh? That's all well and good from an Irish man from Mayo. But what if you (and your grandmother) were Irish people from.......Fermanagh? Still a hero now?

  • johnnailor..... Sir Collins? Surely you are a Brit!

Collins faught to rid Ireland of people like you. Go away,Sir English lickarse!

  • collins was in Frongronch (Wales), not in kilmainham

  • my grandad was also in frongronch.collins used his time there to prepare for the next stage of the struggle

  • dev deserved to hang, even that would have been too good for him. RIP michael collins freedom fighter.

  • i seen michaels collins cell in kilmainham jail aswell as de Valeras.

  • Collins never spent a day in Kilmainham. The jail was used in the movie and in the movie, In The Name of the Father, but Collins was never there.

  • Dev , I dough ever fired a shot, spend most of the years in America and in Lincoin jail, until Collins rescued him.

  • We can spout all we want - another good guy died - for another tossers cause!!

MC still holding the Tricolour and hopefully with JC!!

  • Dev was the greatest scourge this nation ever saw ,he sent a warrior to do a politicians job.

  • Agree 100%

  • exellent point.

  • Pollitically he was. He didn't have the balls to go to england and negotiate a treaty because he knew he could not get what the people of Ireland wanted so he set up Collins and Griffith. That's pretty cowardly to me.

  • the only sell out in the situation was dev. It's pretty suspicious when the self proclaimed leader of Ireland stays home from the most important talks about Irish independence in the nation's history. He set Collins up to bring home the bad news. No one could have negotiated full independance for Ireland at the time, and dev knew that. He's a coaward and the most over rated figure in Irish history.

  • Was Dev really a coward? He fought during the Easter rising when it was quite certain it would cost him his life. He was extremely lucky he wasn't executed.

  • had Collins lived, he may well have taken the 'second step',

but it's clear that few of his followers had any interest in working towards a United Ireland,

but at least, a half step in that direction, has been taken in recent years.

Sean Éireann na nGael go deo.

  • unlike many of those who supported him post the Treaty, Collins was a true Irish freedom fighter, but he was not wily enough fot the Brits & he appears to have become infatuated by the attention he received.

unwilling,as he may have been, he did unfortunately, with British assistance, participate in the murder & torture of his fellow Irishmen, who stood by the Republic.

  • dev hated collins because when he came back from america he was jelous because of the power and the fame collins had

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone know the name of the person who was thought to have murdered Micahel I am sure it is out there.

  • his name was james mcpeak, collins had two bullit woundsin his head , later collinsbrother wanted to exhume michael but dev would not allow it , mcpeak was in the car with him ,you can check it out ,,hope this helps you.

  • The most recent account suggests that the shot was fired by Denis O'Neill, an Anti-Treaty IRA fighter and a former British Army sniper..

  • Mick Colins was a legend and like todays republican clowns as back then the word irish unity is beyond them where by the brits sit back, watch and laugh as we the irish turn on one another. "The freedom to achieve freedom" said michael collins. What if ? and If Only ? Tiocfaidh ar la agus slan go foill...........

  • Dev sent collins to do his dirty work! up the big cork langer. he makes me proud to be irish and we have so much to thank him for!
