@dontbotherreading If you have shift paddles, same effect, M1 + handbreak.
If you don't, I think all you can do is change to Neutral/Reverse and yank that handbrake. Reverse might damage your car, but the thing is.. if your normal brakes are screwed, well, better to try screw up your car's reversing mechanism (can be replaced) than screw up your life (may not be replaceable).
Also, some automatic cars have 1 2 3 (without shift paddles), same thing. Gear 1 + handbrake
that dude actually knows how to drive, what he says is fully correct, slowing down the car with only shifting into lower gears are also called engine or motor brake, and can be down with a manual or automatic too.
what a retard the hand brake is for parking i think its better to replace normal brakes than replace a new clutch and a new hand brake. yeh good lesson on care
put it into "N" for neutral which disengages the engine from wheels then itll start to slow down, if you want you can slowly lift your E brake or slowly step on your paddle brake (whichever one your car has) if your ebrake doesnt work you're fucked :D
If you put into neutral "N" will remove the control on engine and makes the situation more dangerous. What will you do if your car lost the brake while driving on downhill road? Use your engine brake dude.
not sure what you are talking about. why would i keep it in drive when i want it to stop.
the situation is obviously the case where we can't use our brakes that why we use the ebrake, btw if you're refering to EBRAKE for engine break, i am afraid you are mistaken. EBRAKE stands for emergency brake.
If your front brake pads are all worn out brake fluid might leak from the system and when you press the breaks they don't work any more (pedal goes all the way down but nothing happens). If so, then just down shift (not straight to first if you are above 40mph/60kmh lol! ;) and just the parking break (aka e-break).
He failed to mention that most automatics also lets you downshift (there you can go straight to first) - then let go of the throttle and it will downshift by it self.
@tannalv this will only happen if the piston in the caliper contacts the rotor due to it over traveling from no brake pads, i doubt this happend because if it did everytime you applied the breaks it would have been heard a mile away, it failed cause the caliper seal around the piston was worn and caused fluid to leak which causes your pedal to go to the floor not because of worn pads
@AVCheerst apsolutly correct, and don't put your stick shift in neutral every time especially on winter's day(snow and ice) and effort to used engine breaking instead puting stick in neutral
If you don't have brakes just gear brake it by dropping to gears and slowly letting out on the clutch and continue downshifting til your going slow enough to safely engage the parking brake or (in a real emergancy) turn the car off once your going slow and the engine compression will work like an exhaust brake and stop the car.
@adamhoff55 if you have no breaks dont shut the car off..trust me. the breaks went in my car once and my dad shut off the engine but when the engine is off you lose power steering and its wicked hard to steer without it. we hit a big steel pole doing like 50 it was pretty bad.
: @rob92376, if you don't have any brakes never put the car in neutral. neutral means that the drive train is disconnected from the engine and is has minimal friction.
Truck drivers slow their trucks that way often, it is called a "jake brake"
If you have "sudden brake failure" and just use the parking brake, you can go into a skid and lose control. It is improtant to slow the vehicle down first.
@Izoto593 It's not even close to safe. Where I live, to pass a driving exam you have to be able to stop a car downshifting into a lower gear like 1st or 2nd. And believe me, it's a lot safer rather than using only the brakes.
@NewCoordinator Yeah. Downshifting is very useful when going down hills since you're not putting so much stress on the brakes. I've seen people getting their brakes on fire when putting the car in neutral and only slowing down using them.
my car's handbrake doesnt work at all, you can put the handbrake on while driving or parked on a hill and the car will be unaffected by it and still roll i dont know why.
It is an automatic though so im pretty much screwed if the brakes fail? cant put it in park while the car is moving either.
oh gosh, use the handbrake to stop the car ONLY when your footbrake is spoilt and not to stop the vehicle when there is nothing wrong! it will spoil your car please!
ERrrrm he isnt smart enough to say , to stop a car with no brakes put it in 5fith gear and turn the engine off. and ride the clutch alot to avoid the chronic jolts, :) hahaha
well, obviously, you will FIRST slow down the car by down shifting the car... when the engine slows the car enough (lets say, the equivalent of 1st or 2nd gear) than you can use the handbrake more safely.
yes, you should never 'over-rev' it. you should jus use ur brakes, and only downshift on revs that the transmission will be comfortable, and essentially wont be too loud!
idk why he is using the handbrake but when I'm Driving it you change up an extra gear and let the clutch bite you can slow the car down by going that. But because your american you drive an automatic so you have no clue what i am saying.
i had something like that when my brakes went out going 60 MPH down street heading for a dead end I just Thought fast and Pulled the E-Brake HARD AS I COULD
u need a little bit of stopping power do u can just do what he does and use your brake very little to do a complete stop and your brakes will last you a very long time. my brakes lasted me about 9 years before i needed to change them.
no, automatics also have these numbers under the D.. 3,2,1.. those are also gears in teh transmission and they really do about the same effect if carefully used one at a time. its just not as graceful of a stop, but works.
only when the brakes go out not every day because brake pads are cheaper than cluches and new engines when they over rev so no high rev downshifts and e brake still uses brake pads
you can use a handbrake or you can shift gear from 1. to 3. , 4. or 5. gear and release your clutch really fast to stop the car :D
