Beautiful metaphor. My favourite song off 'The Road To Hell' album.....you can have it all and still be lonely, bored and empty, or you can dream of 'Coke' and burgers as you chase the dream; ultimately this system destroys us no matter where we sit on the food chain.
Nice video! It was a brilliant idea to link the lyrics with the story shown in the video. An Eastern German family moving West. With lots of true nostalgic details (looking alike houses and Trabant cars, an Il-62 and a Soviet lorry driving by) and double meanings, showing 'journey' from ascetic utopia to consumerism, video adds sad irony to the song..
@Bennak6 If you truly have lived in Texas for the past 20 years you must have been in a coma!! Anyway, using your logic, then "America the Beautiful' isn't really about America. And "California Girls' by The Beach Boys isn't really about girls from California. You really are beyond all help!

If this song isn't about Texas, then why is it named Texas? If it's a metaphor, why didn't he name it, "Rhode Island"? You must not be a Texan, judging by your comments. No wonder you don't get it !!
@1836mh because maybe he liked the "idea" about TX. or came to TX and thought it was a good place at the time and has never been to Rhode Island. Again, any place could be subsituted for this song....just a matter of preference. Not arguing, so be cool.

The world would be a better place it every nation quit screwing around and feed themselves,,but then,, it's easier to blame the US.

'Just stating the facts Izzy,, I'm just tired of every solution starting with "Yanks should pay/do more,," I sure wasn't bustin' on you personally,, but what did I just hear?
Texas is a friendly state but if you don't like Texas, fine we don't need you any way. Weak minds have to tear down some thing that they envy. Weak minds have to spew profanity to express their selves. Weak minds hate for the sake of hating and a lack of some thing better to do. I love the entire USA but I am proud of my state and what it has accomplished. If you don't like it leave it alone, there is a lot of geography between you and us. GOD BLESS THE USA AND GOD CERTAINLY BLESSED TEXAS
Jesus. Cool song fucked up by a bunch of morons squabbling.
Texas is the greatest place to be. God's country. We are the only state that is still creating jobs, and if we were an independent Republic, as we once were, we'd be the 8th largest economy in the world. You know why? We don't vote for liberals for statewide office. All statewide offices are held by CONSERVATIVES.
@TheAlienesque He he,you don,t know enything about Libia and Gadafi,Gadafi is Genltman comparing with your politicans,Klinton,Bush,Barak and so on.You have no sense for justice,so how can you make judge about these things.NATO is bigest terorist organisation in the world, they are acting like animals, kiling for profit. Why did they attac Irak,Serbia, neither Iraki or Serbs attac USA or eny other country. Why USA did not attac Saudi Arabia, this ppl did 9/11??You know why,cos it is all about profit.
@TheWorldCitizen1 If you want anyone to take you serious, you might want to learn to spell to start with. So much more after that, and after reading your comment further it makes you look simply stupid at best.
@mistabobdobolina Why don't you show some self respect and get off your fat ass and go to the fucking library and learn about how we are all part of the same fucking country. Then I want you to stop shouting your utter bullshit about how you hate anybody who you don't know or understand. Then on your way home from the library, remember to stop by McDonald's and pick up a Big Mac.
@mistabobdobolina Why don't you show some self respect and get off your fat ass and go the fucking library and learn about how we are all part of the same fucking country. Texans, do us all a favor and play against type. I'd love to click on a video like this and find people talking about what they love about Texas and about this song, not spouting a bunch of weak crypto-racist bullshit about Obama that just confirms what the rest of the planet already believes about you. Show some goddamned self-respect.
@TheAlienesque I would not be happy to live on coasts of inocent victims.USA are stealing poor ppl around the world, creating scam fraud bussines. All kind of scam dirty business are coming from USA,what ewer scam comes in Europe,it is from USA.So think ower,i would not be proud to live as a criminal. You did bomb Serbia,Irak,Libia, aso, kiling inocent ppl, only to ocupy this lands and to robe they goods, shame on you.
Um yea that is a made up statistic, I'm not sure where you pulled that one from but hey what ever makes you feel better about yourself. The midwest has been booming in the past few decades and yea we only send the scum down south where they fit right in.
@TheAlienesque lol how adorable of you to view my profile and see where im from im honored, but yea I wouldnt mind it if the whole state of texas blew up, nuthin but a bunch of cousin fucking faggots lol
OK so all you people on here commenting I must say you all have it wrong.
I am from Texas and was in the USAF stationed at Rhine Maine Germany when the wall came down and this song and video is totally amazing, spectacular, and pretty damn accurate to that time period. This is a great freedom song to go where ever you want and Texas just happen to be a great place to go.
@hjconley so is it beter in Texas then in DDR??Ppl are looking for hapines all around the world just not in themselws. As you se,komunist regime is going to come also in USA and in all world, cos Kapitalism is at its end, time of greed and luxuly is over also for USA.USA is only big propaganda,it is a lie of good life and so,actualy it is explotation of poor ppl, somone must work 20 hours per day to keepp living,it is sad. Also,USA is living as a tief, making war all around the world, sead.
@andhow91 I'm a sixth-generation Texan, so I'm glad you like it here. I also like this song and Chris Rea. My husband is from SIngapore, so I have learned British-English as a second language! :)
I was raised a military brat and lived all over the country. In the late 60's, I enlisted and was eventually transfered to Texas, finished my enlistment, and have been here ever since. I learned early on that Texas is not just a location, but a state of mind. I'm fairly certain that he's making a statement on that state of mind - not about actually driving here from Europe. No place I'd rather be either!
Having been born in the same year as Chris; I believe that his reason behind this song is not so much about going to any destination in particular, but having the desire that makes you want to go there.
That's why Mr. BMW with all the trappings of success, envies Mr. TRABBIE so much. Why should someone who owns so little, has such a big dream?
THIS IS NOT TEXAS in the video ... ha ha ha ... this is in Germany where we have large military bases and such. Heck, all signs are in German ... duh! The army guys were coming from the base ... every single car in the beginning and on roads are EUROPEAN STYLE and plates, HELLLLLLLLO McFLY, ha ha ha ... all y'all saying your Texan should be embarassed, ha ha ha ... I am 100% TEXAN and KNOW MY STATE!
@libor4u ... INTERESTING y'all ... everyone notices that "libor4u" did NOT take the time to first, UNDERSTAND where my comment derived from, or second, READ THE POSTS. He must be a liberal progressive, ha ha ha ... libor, if you read, "DON'T YOU THINK" my comment was based after tons of people stating what part of Texas this video was filmed in ... hmmmmmmm, DING, DING, DING, you get a 1,000 points for leaving a pointless comment my liberal non-researched friend, ha ha ha ... God bless TEXAS!
Love this song about my state! The place where the vid was filmed could pass for east Texas -round near Houston where the Renaissance Festival takes place. Chris Rea should have done an all country western album. He would have been the biggest thing in country music since George Strait & Brooks & Dunn. Chris Rea has the most awesome, haunting voice I've ever heard. It has almost the same resonance as Waylon Jennings -another of my favorites.
whattabunch of whacko's comments below.....Chris is from the UK, yet he was able, with words and music, to send up a memorial to the spirit of those who built Texas. Those who gave their lives, and some who took lives, to insure the advancement of individual freedom and personal responsibility.
All of you liberal a holes put together can't even imagine the integrity, or the true character, of the hard working heroes who founded The Republic of Texas, and gave their lives for their country.
Google can be your best friend ,,,, republikkkorps are defining fascist big govt policies and blaming others before they go to do it themselves....against the people. go figga.
If I understood well, when the guy puts some gas into his Trabant, he meets the man with the BMW. The first man doesn't know, but he will become as unhappy as the guy from the West.
This Chris Rea, was found in a barn yard sodomizing a sheep .... they found him distraut , because he thought he was the credit for the serial sheep rapist in texass.... they found them sheep tangled in the fences dead by their hind legs...only later to find out it was his signature....
Oil and military country... tycoons and neo con corporatism... big govt robbing and enslaving the people blind.. oh i wonder how much this propaganda song made ...lol to get this message out the to they typical and transparent naive and gullible of the ignorant and arrogant hicks...that keep voting for abuse of power on the people to serve and be enslaved by the neo con corporatist to allow kickbacks to fund their price gouging of pimping their kids to china.. and foreign interests , wars coming
@hvacrdude1 Not one word from you yet on the subject you wanted spoke of close to half an hour now. You want to know something? I work and I also am a UNION member, and I choose to be Conservative.
@hvacrdude1 Is that an original comment or you just an idiot? I'm going with the latter. You're an idiot, say something original, if that is possible, idiot.

Texas is small towns, not the cities. Road side food stands, just a light bulb outside. Maybe a neon, old glass style, saying 'Come on In. Food Here'.
Spicy, cool, sandwiches, beer, and tacos. Music on the juke box, played slow and easy. Bottle neck blues. 1950s rock-a-billy.
two-lane blacktop.
Nothing but horizon up ahead, and behind.

Now, enjoy the song and quit bitching so much!

I am from Texas and was in the USAF stationed at Rhine Maine Germany when the wall came down and this song and video is totally amazing, spectacular, and pretty damn accurate to that time period. This is a great freedom song to go where ever you want and Texas just happen to be a great place to go.

I'm A Brit living in Texas now for 10 years. I love Chris Rea and this has always been my favorite of his songs,.
You have to live in Texas to really appreciate it and, yes, it is a great State of mind :-)

No disrespect to Texas, but....
