  • What? Assembling the alternator ...! And that's all?

  • Love the video. You might enjoy the trailer for my Novel, it walks the reader through the secrets of Quantum Energy.

    Love and Peace

  • Very informative. You obviously know your stuff. thx

  • Thanks for the clear explanation and demo.

  • imagine as coil gun with that gauge holy shit.

  • onother info you can accelerate from the engine by turning the accelerator even in 2010 cars you can see it. and onother you should tell that alternators drags alote of power from the engine wen load is high.

  • can i have ur number please i wona know how to turn washing machine motor into low rpm alternator

  • thanks man, very useful information

  • thanks man, very useful informayion

  • Great topic for a video. But...need more data to settle the question. 1. What is the minimum RPM a wind setup would need to make your Electric company meter go backwards at a worthwhile rate? 2. What is the best RPM that can be achieved in "average" 15-20 mph winds, using the outer edge of the wind blades to maximize the RPM?

  • @UlfrIronwood hi did you find out the answer to your questions if so could you let me know thanks

  • Amazing video! Finally I've found a good answer why car alternator can't be used for wind turbines. So many cars are entering scrap yards every day, would be so good if car alternators could be used. Thanks for explanation Dan.

I was thinking about re-using front windshields as a glass top for solar air heaters or build a south wall of cob house, but again, it's much harder to frame windshield because it's not flat and corners are not 90 degree. It might work for cob house though.

  • nice!

  • just to add to this, it may have been said but alternators make AC and the diode inside turns it to DC.... just thought id add that

    thanks for the vids dan..

  • Great video! Wouldn´t be easier to have some sort of circuit breaker that stops the alternator to burn the battery instead of some other more complex mechanical solutions? Something like: turbine > alternator | breaker | > battery ?

    Thanks

  • How many rpm were you able to get your Stirling engine at? You should be able to rig that to a small electric motor and see the results. Would be nice to see.

  • what about using a couple of those bike headlight generaters in parallel, maybe put a gear on them instead of the friction wheel for durability

  • nice video Dan, I'm surprised with the amount of wood working you do you haven't got an impact driver. They are so much nicer to use than a regular drill driver.

  • LIKE A SPRING LOADED TING !

  • Ive seen a video of a guy replacing that inner coil with a set of magnets from a larger speaker...im just wondering how effective that would be as in what kind of watts you would be able to achieve from something like that??

  • How much for that chrome alt. I need one for my Vette!!!!!

  • Great demonstration

  • hey love your videos man.

i bet you impress all the ladies with the only muscle that matters.

    your brain hahah

  • Dan, thank you for this walk-through on car alternators. It really helps understand why car alternators aren't viable as wind power alt's. I very much appreciate that you show it, rather than just saying that it wouldn't work. You know the saying, seeing is believing ;-)

Awesome show, you are just awesome :)

  • MAgic carpet comment above, I laughed to the point of gasping for air. LOL

    Excellent response.

  • is that the cute little pit bull i hear barking in the backgroung

  • I skipped ahead a bit, but I think you forgot to cover "clocking" an alternator. I think you are using a GM 10si or (clone or 12si, but it looks like a 10). They can be "clocked" four different ways for different types of cars. Normally, I'd make a "hash" mark with a chisel to aid reassembly but that would just ruin all the shiny you got going on there.

  • shouldn't your car be running on hydrogen? lol nice video

  • If your ambitious make a alternator control device that would shut off the alternator during acceleration and charge a capacitor bank during deceleration. Next project an axial flux anti idle motor ;)

  • Dan, surely thinner wire and more turns equals more internal resistance and more loss of generated volts/amps..... is their a golden rule for windings to get best efficiency etc?

  • I wondered why cars didn't just mount some permanent magnets on the inlet impeller of a turbo(cool side), and rotate them inside coil set. RPM would be very high so lot's of electrical power, for small/light add on. Large turbo would be usable, as powering the alternator as a motor during spin up would reduce turbo lag. But after watching your video I know understand there'd be problems controlling the electrical power.

  • @steveBB30

with the electronically generated field coil, you could switch off the the power completely if you wanted to have the lowest amount of drag. There are one wire alternators in a lot of custom cars. They don't start to generate until after the car is running and the engine is revved once.

Plus, it's not like those rare earth magnets grow on trees. I'll bet regulating the power is easier with a field coil too.

  • @Petawatt. Drag on a shaft not much of a problem. But I doubt brushes would last long at 60,000+ rps.

Bet those fancy alternators simply have a little controller that measures how often the voltage alternates (it's one way non-electronic diesel engines can generate pulses for a tacho). If pulses exceed a certain frequency simply close a hefty power FET(or two) to power the field coils- Total cost of extra electronics £5 even with a current/voltage limit, and synchronous rectification?

  • i knew all of that, but it was still fun to watch.

  • Why are your videos always so slow to download. Are you compressing them at all?

  • @chetopuffs does not matter what dan compresses with, it has no effect on your download side of things, youtube treats them all the same once their uploaded.... try changing the quality level to say 360p from 460/720 etc.

  • By changing the bit rate of your recording you change the bits/sec. Now of course, doing this does not change the speed in which it downloads, but it does change the amount of video you can download at that speed.

    Simple #'s for easy math

video @ 10Mbits/s / download speed x = lots of waiting for buffering

    video @ 5 Mbits/s / download speed x = half as much waiting

I watch most videos at 360 anyway

Theses videos are are among the slowest of all the videos i watch a day

    About 20+ a day

  • @chetopuffs except doesnt youtube re-encode them.... your video encoding only changes how fast you can get them up...

  • @chetopuffs It could be many things, for example, what connection your ISP uses to get to YouTube's servers, the distance and your location. Or, if there's a heavy load on just this node, or multiple viewings simultaneously. Could be many things.

For me (sitting on a 2 x 100 MBit OptoFiber Internet Connection) there's absolutely no delay on his videos. However, there are some that load slower. But not this one.

  • so what would i need along with the alternator to make a wind turbine?

  • @Traf94220 My magic carpet does not have an alternator for demonstration.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE

I don't know how the law works over there, but in Portugal even if you wanted to make your car run on water you wouldn't be able to. Only some visual modifications possible. NO TUNING.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE HAGHAHAHA

  • @Traf94220 Petrol engines are not necessarily more polluting than diesel engines. It all depends on many things, i.e. the size of the engine. Look at Chevrolet's 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (Duratec?)... You can get a looot of petrol engines that use way less fuel, and are much cleaner, with the same HP (260). You will probably lose in Torque though, but not everyone needs to pull an armored vehicle on a trailer after their car, every day ;-)

  • @TheRealXesc Is THAT why they invented Chevrolet's 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (Duratec)!

  • @TheRealXesc You've got a point. ie Really massive ship engines burn gallons of diesel/fuel oil) per mile.To compare different size engines BMEP, and BSFC are useful measures. Diesel more efficient, due to higher and flatter torque curve(the engine's torque when divided by displacement is good measure of efficiency) , better Pressure-Volume curves and higher compression ratios (which increases efficiency). If a diesel could run at same RPM as a petrol it would make significantly more power

  • @steveBB30

Power is just torque multiplied by revs per second (works best in metric- no constants needed), so no you don't really lose out on torque. Just use gearing to trade RPM, for torque.

  • @Traf94220 it might be bio-petrol, ethanol or hemp gas.

  • The famous host of greenpowerscience is using a petrol engine car ?...

    This put apart excellent video.

  • The famous host of greenpowerscience is using a petrol engine car ?...

  • @Traf94220 He only uses it for emergencies and to visit Al Gore's huge McMansion for talking points on the latest sunspot count twice yearly.

But I'm sure he uses E85 fuel so he can manage to starve more third worlders while burning crappy corn gas.

  • Excellent vid, thanx

  • Good video.

  • A tip: to determine if your brushes are worn out on your automotive alternator simply turn the ignition key to on, do not start the engine... place a steel object (screw driver) near the front or rear of the rotor shaft, it will be strongly attracted to it if the brushes are good. The alternator is in full field mode at this point and draws about 3 amps to fully output most alternators regardless of size once the engine starts, this is why a loose belt makes noise due to the load.

    Nice video Dan

  • @CTOL1 Totally cool tip! Probably would not work for a one-wire or when the ballast resister is bad.

  • Great Video... Very informative... Nicely done

  • No bikinis this time? :P

  • I find this interesting, as a person who remembers when we had two cars that could be started with a crank, and 6 volt batteries were routine. In fact, as I recall, our Model A Ford didn't even have a battery!

  • I had the idea that alternators were more efficient than generators, thought it was supposed to be the latest thing. What's with that?

  • uh oh.... i see a "service engine soon" light on

  • Hey man, You could at least thank your wife. lol I'm just kidding. Thanks for the upload.

  • your one cool dude,,

  • Great show. I learn something new from you all the time.

  • great video man keep them up :)))

  • I have a buddy that has a set up using alternators like this. 2 cyl Kubota? diesel engine pushing up to 8! alternators. Runs to battery bank, then to inverter. Its a little reefer motor out of a produce trailer. Thing runs for days on one tank of fuel.

  • GREAT DEMONSTRATION DAN,

ALSO TO ADD TO THE INFO, WITH THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR SET UP, THE ROTOR USES MORE CURRENT ON LOW RPM'S TO RAISE VOLTAGE. WHEN THE ROTOR IS ROTATING AT HIGH RPMs THE FIELD CURRENT IS MUCH LOWER TO KEEP THE VOLTAGE OUT DOWN. IF IT STOPS THE FIELD CURRENT IS AT MAX AND DRAINS THE BATTERY. THUS A BAD WIND TURBINE PACKAGE FOR SEMI BREEZY DAYS. MAN THAT ALTERNATOR IS SO SHINEY, IT WOULD BE A SIN TO PUT IT IN MY VAN. SWEET JOB.

    MUDDy

  • @muddymuddymuddmann Thank you MUDDy

Great job on the WOOD GASIFIER on your channel!

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE THANKS DAN.

    MUDDy

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE TNX DAN, I GOTTA DO SOME MODS BEFORE IT CAN USE THE WOOD GAS LIKE I HAD PLANNED FOR IT. THERE IS AN ALL WOOD WIND TURBINE CALLED WOOD 103. A SMALL 100 WATTER AND A ONE DAY PROJECT. IF YOU WANT, I WILL SEND YOU THE PDF FILE LINK. IF YOU WANT IT.

    MUDDy

  • @muddymuddymuddmann

did you leave your capslock key in your van? I like your informative post but you come off as an imbecile when you type in all caps

  • @muddymuddymuddmann

did you leave your capslock key in your van? I like your informative post but you come off as an imbecile when you type in all caps

  • @Janus5711 NOPE I LEFT IT ON MY KEYBOARD WITH A WEIGHT ON IT. :o)

  • @muddymuddymuddmann Hey MUDDy, great videos man. Im still new kinda to this, but im almost done with the ceiling fan turbine coversion:) But as for using alternator for Wind Turbine with voltage reg.--being that the current increases at low rpms, does that mean more friction? and that is why it doesnt work? And then for high RPMs it just doesnt put out much power? do you know how much power it will make with votage reg at high rpm's? thanks in advance. GreenPowerScience and MuddyMann rock!

  • @cojobo34 THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS THE PROBLEM. IT DOESN'T MIX GOOD WITH THE HIGH VOLTAGE THE CFTURBINES MAKE. A VOLTAGE REGULATOR SHORTS OUT ANY EXTRA VOLTAGE TO GROUND AND WASTES THE CURRENT AND VOLTAGE. THUS NO JUICE. USE A BATTERY FOR REGULATION, WHEN THE WIND BLOWS ALL DAY THE BATTERY WILL TRICKLE CHARGE FULL. JUST USE IT UNTIL IT DROPS A FEW VOLTS AND LET IT CHARGE AGAIN. 24 VOLTS IS BETTER.

    MUDDy

  • @muddymuddymuddmann I see, thanks man. What do you guys think about this: Windturbine to battery pack to (good low torque) electric motor, turning modern gas generator (with gas engine replaced by elec motor). Wud this work with enough wind turbines? How efficient would this be? My goal is to design and construct a fully self-sufficient kind of safe/survival room-- I have not determined the final wattage consumption for everything yet, but it will obviously have to be consistent. any ideas?

  • @cojobo34 here is what I will need to run: 1 small chest freezer for ice. limited LED lighting (will have LEDs on rechargeable batteries as well) and here is the biggy: Indoor hydroponics for growing veggies. I will need a constant power supply for atleast 12 hours at a time for the lights, which are high output flourescents (IDk wattage consump yet..) and a small fountain pump/water pump. I will have a battery pack of 6-8 batteries (12 volt?) shud i use wind turbines for this?any ideas?

  • @cojobo34 MECHANICAL TO ELECTRICAL HAS BIG LOSS AND ELECTRICAL TO MECHANICAL HAS LOSS. THE WIND IS WILD AND THE SPEED OF THE LOW TORQUE WIL FLUXUATE TOO MUCH, PLUS THE LOW TORQUE WILL NOT RUN THE GENERATOR WITH A LOAD ON THE GENERATOR. THE AXIAL FLUX WIND TURBINE WITH A DECENT BATTERY BANK WOULD BE ABOUT THE BEST IDEA ON ALL THAT.

    MUDDy

  • @muddymuddymuddmann YOU WILL NEED MORE THAN A C F TURBINE AND MORE BATTERIES, GOOD ONES LIKE DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES.

    MUDDy

  • I have an old car alternators that is still good. Going to play with it and see what I can make it do. Thank you GREENPOWERSCIENCE for a cool video.

  • wow...details...details,,,good job

  • Now what if you connected 4 Axial Generators to 4 wheels on a car to generate electricity?

  • @ShowinYaHow you would burn more fuel while driving. Would work great for breaking at lights etc.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE Ok... now what if you used a 4 stroke engine that runs on strictly hydrogen. You could use a 1 or 2 cylinder, and it would drive just an alternator. 4 wheels would drive axial generators. WHile your driving, and up to speed, two could charge, and two could drive, and the Hydrogen engine could recharge whatever slack you have. You could produce that much hydrogen on spot for an engine that small, so you wouldn't have to have a gas tank full of hydrogen.

  • @ShowinYaHow One thing to keep in mind - it is considered impossible to create an over unity engine, i.e., a perpetual motion machine. However, it is also good to keep dreaming and inventing. Maybe you're the one who could prove all the experts wrong!

  • @bodryn I never said it would be perpetual motion... There would be a battery. A hydrogen cell to produce hydrogen, and engine to burn it, to spin an alternator, to recharge the battery. The 4 axial generators could recharge the battery/move the car.

  • @ShowinYaHow Well, like I say, if you can prove the experts wrong, whatever your system is, I'm all for it!

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE It's funny you say that, because I remember when I was in school, 25+ years ago, we were riding buses in Denmark, that were in experimental tests, where they'd engage a huge magnetizing on some alternators when braking, so rather than using traditional brakes, they added resistances through magnetic fields, and charged up batteries, that would in turn be used to help the bus accelerate with assisting electro-motors to reduce the fuel use. I am sure that by now, it's standard.

  • Hey dan, i got an electric motor that has 2 dark grey wires and 2 blck wires. can i do the same thing with the magnets?

  • @CCSinventions what does the face place say?

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE it says on it 115v 60 hz it has no brand name

  • hi dan!

  • @Doromar80 Hi Adam or Josh!

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE first one at the moment
