Why can't movies make car chases like this any more, Instead of like six helicopters, Twenty police cars, Million dollar explosions. I miis the good ol' days of movies, This just made Steve Mcqueen GOD!!!
How was business for the American auto industry then compared to now? They were style leaders then. Now, especially GM, follows Asian and European auto makers. And they're usually 5 years behind. The Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger, all cars from the late 60s and 70s, are all selling very well.
Mustang and Camaro sell well in the States. They hardly sell at all anywhere else on the planet. There are a number of reasons for this, which I really don't feel like writing 3 posts about. One is that they are in a niche of cars that really doesn't exist outside the U.S.
The problem with Detroit is that they still think it's the 1960's. Things change. Those who don't adapt perish, that's how it is in evolution.
Shame car chases in movies today never hold a candle to this.. just a few cars.. some cameras and some men who knew how to drive.. no BAYSPLOSIONS or 3D gimmicks..
the mustang seems to have the handling advantage but as soon as they hit the straights it lacks the torque and the charger puts some distance between em.
Bill Hickman (1921-1986), one of the greatest movie stunt drivers of all time and a close friend of screen legend James Dean (1931-1955), who pulled Dean from his wrecked Porsche when he crashed it in his fatal accident in September 1955 near Salinas, California, is the driver of the Black Dodge Charger in this 1968 "Bullitt" chase sequence, which Hickman himself coordinated & orchestrated--driving the Charger the ENTIRE time--with Steve McQueen and his heavily modified Ford Mustang GT.
Another thing I forgot to comment on was when McQueen blew his turn and had to backup, you could see that the car had a single trac differential ..smoked the driver's side tire in reverse and the other in forward gears. I wonder if they chose to not run a posi- trac because of all the sharp SF city turns with the horsepower in those cars. There would have been a lot of spinouts but a lot better tire smoking launches with a posi trac!
People talk about other movies with good car action scenes but none has the cool factor of this one. Also a shout out to the motorcycle stuntman who lays it down, helmetless, at a pretty fair speed against oncoming fast traffic @ 5:52. Well done!
i got this from top gear, but according to Clarkson. he says Hinkman was suppose to drive into a garage when it blew up, but you can see it drive past in the background. i dont think he couldve done a better job because the way the charger bounces around after it leaves the road. im surprised he managed to maintain control. thats what you get when you leave the driving to the best of the best. however, to prove how cool he really is. to have Mcqueen to do his own driving. it gives me goosebumps.
@biggunz64 this is very true, but here is a true fact. the charger was also built better because during this chase. the mustang had to be repaired constantly because the suspension was taking too much punishment from the numerous San Francisco jumps. the charger, on the other hand, was always able to perform without any problems.
@flashganargerbarben Going up them hills would be hell on the clutch. Can't afford to have them slip. I was in the area of PA with my Dakota on business, lot of hills.
Pure TESTOSTERONE. The only nitpick I have about this chase is the fact that the Dodge didnt flip over Dukes of Hazzard style. Then again, this was 11 years before DoH.
@RichardElden Don't ever say something about anyone. You say it to Steve McQueen because he is a LEGEND and you are jealous and envious because you can never be as great as him as long as you are making remarks like that. So next time keep it to yourself ...
I would imagine if the EVO was being chased it wouldn't be a chase. These Japanese All Wheel Drives are crazy, but the Mustang is nicer car, a more manly car.
Can anyone confirm if those cars were using manual transmissions? I'm pretty sure the Mustang was but it's a bit hard to tell with the Charger since you rarely get to see his hands that low. I'd be pretty dissapointed if they weren't, since it's so badass.
@petars234 There were two dodges but the one you see in the later scene was the version with the 4 speed, and in the other scenes it was a torqueflite 727

The "hit man" driving the Charger was the actual driver of the car. Stunt driver and actor Bill Hickman, who was actually one of the first on the scene when his friend and driving protege James Dean had the car accident that killed him in 1955.
@LateNightCable Yes, Dean's tragically fatal accident outside Salinas, California on September 30, 1955. Dean was just 24. Bill Hickman--who pulled James Dean from the wreckage only to have Dean die in his arms--was 34.
@gunny426plymouth@gunny426plymouth lol... you do know that 90% of the sounds you hear were added in later by foley artists, yeah? don't get me wrong, that's how the car really sounded, but most of the revs, crashes and tire squeals were recorded separately and added later for effect. the funniest moment is when both cars jump over a hill for the first time... they literally re-use the same "car crashing back to earth" sound twice, in succession. tires are squealing for no reason. classic.
@clairetamehana It's an editing choice, going for the coolest look instead of correctness. No replays in those days or rewinds, much easier to pick things out nowadays. BTW look at the road on the corners, you can see the skidmarks from prior practice runs and/or takes ;)
I'm sorry, but put me in the seat of that Charger, and I would of gotten away. I mean, all due respect to the Mustang, but being a Mopar guy, I'd have to say the Charger would take it.
It's hard to believe they pulled off this scene on bias-ply tires. Even today it's all CG and camera tricks. These guys got up to 78mph - in the city, that's fast. My favourite part believe it or not is actually when Steve McQueen overshoots the right hand, throws it into reverse, wheel hop and all, and blisters the shit out of the inside right rear so much that all you can hear is a melted-rubber-like sounding skid. haha. I love that.
i read somewhere the mustang had 390 milled heads, bigger cam headers and straight dual exhaust, but the double clutch sound was dubbed in from a ford gt40 with 427 i dont know if this is true but i read it somewhere i respect both of em and the corvette camera car but my heart is with the mopar
@nedster01 I would love to see a modern Charger/Mustang reenactment of this scene on the same streets. ;) Problem is the Hemi Charger comes in only AWD, if I'm not mistaken. That and it has four-doors...ugh, Come on, that drive Mopar-nuts bonkers.
the mustang is bautifully designed. the shape w the fast back just makes it unique. the charger looks like a rectangle piece of metal with lights. it dont take much of a genius to design that piece a junk w wheels.
@monkeyboy563 Hey, that was my line, lol! Actually in all seriousness, that was Bill Hickman-- who also did the stuntdriving in The French Connection (off camera) and The Seven-Ups-- not Herbert Anderson. If you think about it though, Dennis would've been about 17 at this time and no doubt Henry Mitchell would've gone nuts with a dropped-out, unemployed and serial-juvie Dennis blasting In-a-Gadda-Da-Vidda all day long in his underwear while dragging on baseball-bat-sized Bob Marley joints.
@reprobacious Sorry brother, always thought that when I watch that Bullitt! BTW LOVE the Seven-ups chase!! Also, I think the Charger was a 440 and not a Hemi. I messed up that fun fact too.
the charger actually performed better than the mustang in the chase, the mustang had problems on every jump on those hills where as the charger didnt break like the mustang did. and plus mcqueen actually regretted not choosing to drive the charger for this movie, both are still great muscle cars but id take the charger anyday!!
@2:31: That's a 4,000-lb. car doing this. Up off the asphalt, going UPHILL. Imagine the energy--the TORQUE!--it takes for this Charger to accomplish this feat. Powerful.
@BroPros Exactly. I meant they're driving around cities for Chrissake, it's like the directors just forgot that there's people living there. Most unrealistic piece of crap ever. At least here there's some danger that he might not catch them...it's much more fun to watch.
Bill Hickman (1921-1986), the black-suited, glasses-wearing driver of the black 375-horsepower Dodge Charger in this seminal "Bullitt" car chase sequence, was considered one of the world's finest stunt drivers in his day. He coordinated & orchestrated the entire car-chase sequence with Steve McQueen & his stunt-driving doubles in "Bullitt" (1968), as well as for the motion pictures "The Seven-Ups" (1973), and "The French Connection" (1971).
@B304A124 Right on the money. One more thing a lot of people don't know, is that Bill was best buds with James Dean, & was following him to the races in Salinas when Dean had his fatal crash in 1955. Dean & Hickman called each other "Little Bastard" (Dean) & "Big Bastard" (Hickman) & Dean even had his nickname lettered across the top back deck of the Porsche he was driving when he crashed.
@BroPros Exactly...and people actually driving that fast without hitting a few kinks in the road or having to swerve to avoid some really bad car trouble is just stupid. Somehow the concept of someone who's not an amazing driver yet manages to catch up to the bad-guys, despite losing them a few times, is far coller than amazing drivers in flashy cars gettin away from the police. Seriously, Hollywood is forgetting what realism is.
Anybody else think they should do a tribute remake of this chase with the new versions of these cars? 2012 Boss 302 vs New Charger Hemi? Would be interesting imo.
It was a time before the whizzie graffics that we have now that create this stuff on a computer, without anyone risking their lives to do stunts. This was VERY real. I was in a small restaurant in LA in the late 70s with my wife. Sitting next to us was a film crew, including the star of a TV series called "Combat", veteran actor Vic Morrow. After dinner he had a "night shoot" involving a helicopter. Something went wrong, and he was literally cut in half by the helicopter blades.
Did you ever walk into your boss' office only to have him standing there, glaring at you like @9:35? You just get the feeling this just ain't gonna be your morning.......
My stepdad told me once that there was an incident when some teenage guys rear ended Steve's car. He'd just bought it that day, it was a great model too. Apparently he just climbed out, went over to the kids who'd hit him, didn't say a word, handed them the keys to it, and just walked to a coffee house, got a coffee, then went and bought another car (same model). What a great guy man. You see Christian Bale try and pull that level of cool off ;)
@bobdy9988 That's wrong, that sounds like something Paul Newman would do. Steve McQueen would have gotten out and ever so cooly got out of his car, gave them the keys, told them if it isn't fixed in an hour, he's going to beat the shit out of them, and then go get a coffee. Then he would come back and subsequently beat the hell out of them.
@radioripster Actually surprising that he didn't shoot up the whole city of SF. Being 1968, Dennis would've been about 17 at this time, having dropped out of the 7th grade after 4 tries and moved on to serial felonhood after shooting Sgt Mooney. The Mitchells & the Wilsons probably tired countless interventions before throwing in the towel and going bonkers but couldn't keep Dennis from blasting In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida all day long with the top floor of the house reeking of hash.
2...289-V8's..in-line...??.....your aren't supposed to smoke your-underwear..Urkel...hey....didn't you also discover that : there was no moon-landing ?
Ok... Hope you had a long sleeve shirt on when watching this because around 1:40's the chills started and whoah! to the meek of hearts when it came 2:06!!!
It's a apocalyptic nightmare when the clutch is let out and all animals and foul of the air head for cover...Yee-haw
The scene itself is incredible. Now...ask the question...how was it filmed??? Some of the scenes were done with "hood mounted" or "interior mounted" cameras. But the scenes from the front and back of the cars, as they whizz along at heaven knows what speed, were filmed by crews in special vehicles that HAD to be travelling at the same speed! Wow. Talk about skill, and nerves of steel.
3 speed manual with Hurst linkages. It could do 100 in 2nd gear.Tthe incredible sound is because the Mustang had no mufflers. Watch the BACK shots of the car. There were twin 289 V-8 engines (16 cylinders) and all the "headers" were connected directly to open pipes. That's been illegal for years, because of pollution laws. The Mustang was set up like the cars at the Indianapolis 500. ALL the car standards are pushed to the limits, to find out how new engineering designs stand-up.
@ridgeapd Well, the multiple cars is true to an extent. They used 2 Chargers and 2 Mustangs for the whole chase scene. I've read that the Mustangs though kept breaking down and had to constantly be repaired because they couldn't handle the rough driving, especially the hill jumps.
@ridgeapd I don't see how that could be possible considering you can see the Mustang following the Charger before the Charger makes the turn and it looks like it was all done in one shot. I think they just kept the camera on the Charger because showing the Mustang also making the turn would have been a bit repetitive. Not trying to sound like a jerk. Just wanted to throw that out there.
HOTTEST FRIGN CAR CHASE IN A MOVIE PERIOD...I USED TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL 67 MUSTANG FASTBACK, UNTIL MY MISERABLE HUSBAND (NOW EX THANK GOD) SOLD IT...AND I HAVE TO ADMIT I DROVE THAT POOR CAR PRETTY HARD, BUT WAS WAY TOO MUCH FUN NOT TO..
If you make the suspension tough enough, the car doesn't "lean over", which is what causes a car to fall over. Properly designed, the car could sustain "a controlled slide" while the wheels are running at "rudder burning speeds". Ever watch LeMans, or the Long Beach Grand Prix? That's what they do - keep the wheels turning while it's sliding sideways (so it doesn't roll-over), then slow down to get traction, and gun it when they come out of the turn.
@ridgeapd You're not an engineer. Come on out here to LA where special effects and specialty car builders abound. Ever seen a Shelby Cobra Mustang? They thought Shelby was nuts to try to do it, but he did. He made a fortune building special Mustangs out of "stock" cars.Ever see a "funny car". They generate over 1,500 horsepower and are very specially designed. It started here in Southern California where Hollywood thrives. Remember, what you saw, and what happened, may not have been the same.
The sound of the engines n whatnot are just orgasms for the ear. The whistle sound when the dodge slows into a corner is great. Good buildup with music and camera angles, then BOOM....let rip! Awesome :D
Take note: If you're a hit man and carry a shotgun in your car, always wait til the middle of a high speed chase to load it, that way your leather gloves will look even badder to the bone.
The engines were actually "off the shelf" Ford 289 CI. Models. The producers went to Ford and asked what they could do to increase their performance. What they did was tie 2 289s, back to back, each with twin 4-barrel carburators. They had to put the radiator in the trunk. Then they tied it to a manual 3 speed transmission, with Hurst linkages, and very heavy duty suspension. Then they said to Steve "just drive". He had raced at La Mans, so he knew what he was doing. Incredibly good movie.
According to articles in the car mags at the time, (A) McQueen did hardly of the driving and (B) neither car was modified - blueprinted, yes, and the suspension magnafluxed and shot-peened, but basically stock.
Today you gotta stack actors like 9 high just to kiss Steve's,Clint Eastwoods and James Garners ass.The capper is Steve's son is such a tool. Just a wanna be douche, not even a full fledged douche.Riding Daddy'd coattails to douchedom.

With high performance and heavy duty transmissions one can't double clutch. Grannyshifting is indeed required on these types of transmissions!
Bidil6 8 months ago
The charger got caught because he was "granny shiftin, not double clutchin like he should"

the mustang is bautifully designed. the shape w the fast back just makes it unique. the charger looks like a rectangle piece of metal with lights. it dont take much of a genius to design that piece a junk w wheels.
rosagg45 8 months ago
The charger lost about 12 hudcaps. The 'stanger must have a 23 speed tranny and wasn't that Dennis the menaces father driving the hemi? Just sayin'
monkeyboy563 8 months ago

@monkeyboy563 Yeah and Gerald Ford was riding shotgun.

the charger actually performed better than the mustang in the chase, the mustang had problems on every jump on those hills where as the charger didnt break like the mustang did. and plus mcqueen actually regretted not choosing to drive the charger for this movie, both are still great muscle cars but id take the charger anyday!!

B304A124 8 months ago
@B304A124 Right on the money. One more thing a lot of people don't know, is that Bill was best buds with James Dean, & was following him to the races in Salinas when Dean had his fatal crash in 1955. Dean & Hickman called each other "Little Bastard" (Dean) & "Big Bastard" (Hickman) & Dean even had his nickname lettered across the top back deck of the Porsche he was driving when he crashed.
Donkey9900 8 months ago 8
@BroPros Exactly...and people actually driving that fast without hitting a few kinks in the road or having to swerve to avoid some really bad car trouble is just stupid. Somehow the concept of someone who's not an amazing driver yet manages to catch up to the bad-guys, despite losing them a few times, is far coller than amazing drivers in flashy cars gettin away from the police. Seriously, Hollywood is forgetting what realism is.
willkillyoulast 8 months ago
Anybody else think they should do a tribute remake of this chase with the new versions of these cars? 2012 Boss 302 vs New Charger Hemi? Would be interesting imo.
SKsquashbass12 8 months ago
It was a time before the whizzie graffics that we have now that create this stuff on a computer, without anyone risking their lives to do stunts. This was VERY real. I was in a small restaurant in LA in the late 70s with my wife. Sitting next to us was a film crew, including the star of a TV series called "Combat", veteran actor Vic Morrow. After dinner he had a "night shoot" involving a helicopter. Something went wrong, and he was literally cut in half by the helicopter blades.

You see Christian Bale try and pull that level of cool off ;)
bobdy9988 8 months ago
@bobdy9988 That's wrong, that sounds like something Paul Newman would do. Steve McQueen would have gotten out and ever so cooly got out of his car, gave them the keys, told them if it isn't fixed in an hour, he's going to beat the shit out of them, and then go get a coffee. Then he would come back and subsequently beat the hell out of them.

radioripster 7 months ago 2
@radioripster Actually surprising that he didn't shoot up the whole city of SF. Being 1968, Dennis would've been about 17 at this time, having dropped out of the 7th grade after 4 tries and moved on to serial felonhood after shooting Sgt Mooney. The Mitchells & the Wilsons probably tired countless interventions before throwing in the towel and going bonkers but couldn't keep Dennis from blasting In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida all day long with the top floor of the house reeking of hash.

terminator4992 8 months ago
The scene itself is incredible. Now...ask the question...how was it filmed??? Some of the scenes were done with "hood mounted" or "interior mounted" cameras. But the scenes from the front and back of the cars, as they whizz along at heaven knows what speed, were filmed by crews in special vehicles that HAD to be travelling at the same speed! Wow. Talk about skill, and nerves of steel.
ownyourfuture1 8 months ago
3 speed manual with Hurst linkages. It could do 100 in 2nd gear.Tthe incredible sound is because the Mustang had no mufflers. Watch the BACK shots of the car. There were twin 289 V-8 engines (16 cylinders) and all the "headers" were connected directly to open pipes. That's been illegal for years, because of pollution laws. The Mustang was set up like the cars at the Indianapolis 500. ALL the car standards are pushed to the limits, to find out how new engineering designs stand-up.

flyjunkie2 8 months ago 3
@ridgeapd Well, the multiple cars is true to an extent. They used 2 Chargers and 2 Mustangs for the whole chase scene. I've read that the Mustangs though kept breaking down and had to constantly be repaired because they couldn't handle the rough driving, especially the hill jumps.
BoUrnNe26 9 months ago
Amazing
stop2think 9 months ago
@ridgeapd I don't see how that could be possible considering you can see the Mustang following the Charger before the Charger makes the turn and it looks like it was all done in one shot. I think they just kept the camera on the Charger because showing the Mustang also making the turn would have been a bit repetitive. Not trying to sound like a jerk. Just wanted to throw that out there.

HOTTEST FRIGN CAR CHASE IN A MOVIE PERIOD...I USED TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL 67 MUSTANG FASTBACK, UNTIL MY MISERABLE HUSBAND (NOW EX THANK GOD) SOLD IT...AND I HAVE TO ADMIT I DROVE THAT POOR CAR PRETTY HARD, BUT WAS WAY TOO MUCH FUN NOT TO..
jillzi7 9 months ago 3
If you make the suspension tough enough, the car doesn't "lean over", which is what causes a car to fall over. Properly designed, the car could sustain "a controlled slide" while the wheels are running at "rudder burning speeds". Ever watch LeMans, or the Long Beach Grand Prix? That's what they do - keep the wheels turning while it's sliding sideways (so it doesn't roll-over), then slow down to get traction, and gun it when they come out of the turn.
ownyourfuture1 9 months ago
I sometimes put this on just to listen to it while I do something else.
biohazardArt 9 months ago 33

Awesome :D
