The problem with Barr, though, is that he's not much more than a lesser-known Ron Paul on the issues. Sure, on economics he'll defend liberty, but on social issues, he's VERY conservative. Anti-stem cells, anti-gay marriage, antiabortion, and so on. He's not a true Libertarian.

That's a great and long-overdue message, and I like Barr, but his record isn't nearly as libertarian as his current rhetoric. This is the same guy who voted against allowing the use of medical marijuana in DC despite the passage of a referendum in its favor. He also voted for a flag-burning amendment and to send military troops to the border to "fight drugs" (posse comitatus, anyone?). Again, I'm glad he's in the race and I'll probably vote for him, but we need to remember his history.

Those are all good points you bring up. But as a recent convert to the libertarian philosophy myself, I can vouch for the fact that just because he hasn't always been a libertarian, it doesn't necessarily mean he's insincere.

For example, I know that he has changed his tune about medical marijuana. In fact, the head of the Marijuana Policy Project has supported him. He also regrets his votes for the Patriot Act and the Iraq War.

I am a reformed neocon, so I know that there's hope for us all!
