the 800m is basically running two 400 meters back to back so it could be considered a sprint for intermediate runners but should be ran at a fast pace
i got told run the first 150m fast than pase your self for basically the rest of the lap. Than in the last lap sprint your heart out. On the final 200m of the race use all the energy u can find. whenever you get energy through the race use it up so it doesn't just sit there and do nothing
like me i get tired like other people . but i have a lot of energy still left so i can easily sprint the whole second lap . my coach told me last year hit the first curve hard so it'll make the rest easy . and hit the other curves hard then stride the stieght untill the last strieght away give it all u got
this is shite. when you run 800m, usually groups divide up over the first 200m, the first group usually being the runners who are too overenthusiastic and stupid, the second is where the smart people are, you should stick to the 2nd group, and if you're running a 52 for your 400m dash, you should try get your first lap in 58-59, then on the 2nd, focus on taking over on the 100m straights only, the curves require much more energy, and use whatever you have left in the last 100m
An 800 is pretty much a 400 just being tired.. everyone stays up with each other first lap then 2nd lap is just how much ya got left in your tank and how bad you want it.
at top level 800m it is staggered and i you want a good 800m time around the age 14 / 15 get around a 58 first lap and blow the second within youre stride :) i have got 58 1st lap on all my races this year and my best time is 1.56.78 at 15
thats a wicked time :) i lack the speed on the first lap so i normal sut behind who ever going tho 400 meter quickest and attack in the last 200 my pb not amaing for being 14 a its only 2.33.1 but i reckon if i had more races over that distance(as i pefer to do 100 ,long jump & triple jump ) and better oppstion i could go 2.19 ish maybe :) (Y)
wot i always do on the 800m is go slow on the first lap and get faster as the second lap goes on. when ur runnin the first lap dont worry about going too fast u still have another full lap left to go where u can use ur energy.
@PEELHEAD19 Thank you soo much this guy didn't help me at all but what you said helps me a lot I'm a 400 runner and "I'm going to pentathlon tommorrow so I will be running 800 for the 1st time and I feel really pressured by coaches sayin I will be fine cus I run a great 400 this confused me now I get it but I need to get in the top 8 and I'm still not sure how fast to go in the first lap! I freakin hate 800 hurts like heck

1. 800m is not a sprint
2. the muscle cell respiration involved in running an 800 is significantly different- far more aerobic, than sprinting 100, 200 or 400.
3. Usain Bolt 100m - 9.58 200m- 9.65/100 = 19.30
Michael Johnson 400m- 10.79/100 = 43.18 David Rudisha 800m- 12.75/100 = 1:41.01

at different levels of competition they set it up differently, you can have a staggered, box, or waterfall start depending on the race
track434 3 years ago
The 800m isn't staggered....
