sounds like the sheer scale of the trip has gotten a bit overwhelming - which is normal if you've never done it before. the country does have some long, boring-ass expanses, to be sure; but why are you trying to cover so much distance so fast?

the tired old saying is true: getting there is half (+) the fun. you can 'see' a lot more, and more interesting stuff, if you travel more slowly, hit the small towns, shun the interstates, talk to random locals. you're lucky you can do that; many can't.
