Robert Downey Jr. is the main reason behind the success of Iron Man . The film was awesome but it was Downey Jr. performance as Tony Stark that made the film Iconic .

I hope that when marvel does do Captain America they cast an actor that truly embodies the characteristics of both Steve Rogers & Captain America. Much like how Jon Favreau casted Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man .

TDK was a sequel whereas iron Man sorta came out of no where. A better test will be how IM2 does against TDK's record.

I think the main reason TDK did so well (box office wise) was because of Heath Ledger's anticipated performance and sad to say, his death.

While that was definitely a factor, I wouldn't say it was the entire reason for it's success. And that wouldn't explain Avatar coming along and beating it only a year and a half later. I mean, most people expected TDK's gross to not be passed(domestically at any rate) for probably about 10 years or so.

Saw this monday in cinema, absolutely brilliant!!! Totally agree with the previous comment. I love the bit at the end of this trailer where he shoots the missile and it sounds like a toy or something then as he walks away it explodes!! Awesome! As Vensito said, stay after the credits for a cool surprise!

The major things that were different were the origin of Jim Rhodes, the Afghanistan war instead of Vietnam war and Tony works in California instead of New York. The are other subtle changes, but can always be traced back to the comic book Iron Man.

Terrence Howard signed on to this specifically because of the chance of playing war machine. War machine is not going to be in this movie from what it seems, It was a dream of Howard's to play war machine and is dying to play him in a future movie. And by the quality of this movie it seems he will get his chance. RDJ is the perfect choice for Stark.
