I do not like that these chimps are in a lab,of course infront of the camera they are going to make it seem as though the chimps have what they need, but behind the scenes they are kept in cages.Even Zoo's and Sanctuarys keep them in cages when its not "visiting time/exercise time", it is so sad-they at least deserve to be on an island sanctuary, not a man-made one. @runespas They know symbols, numbers are a form of symbols-Some also know sign language, and there are some keepers that have a chart with over 500 symbols for different things like, banana, cat, kiss,etc. and she can show them the fruit/animal/gesture and they know the symbol for it..."they dont know symbols or any of that sort"....really? @Smithitty Depends on how you define smart/intelligent. To a theoretical physicist these sorts of memory and spatial skills are indispensable. The chimps are testing with a design that's almost exactly like the Raven's Progressive Matrices, which is a human intelligence test that quantifies general intelligence/ IQ using non-verbal measures. "Intelligence" is tied to adaptability which is then tied to the environment. Alter the environment and humans can become "stupid" pretty quickly

chimps communicate extensively. their vocal cords aren't as complex as ours, and for that reason their main form of communication is body language. this is true of all animals, including humans. i don't think that anyone here is trying to generalize that chimps are indeed more intelligent, simply that they ARE a complex and thinking creature that is understimated as a whole.

Title is misleading. Humans and chimps diverged from a common ancestor several million years ago. Our environments have not been the same since then and it isn't surprising that chimps would require a near-photographic memory in order to successfully navigate trees, branches, and other obstacles. Human aptitudes evolved in a different direction (language,etc) that did not require similar aptitudes as chimps. Its not a question of intelligence,but one of adaptation and evolution.
