By the way the author said himself this book, The Beach, was based on his travels through Philippines not Thailand but he wanted the movie to be based in Thailand because he was trying to show how backpackers are searching for that 'pleasurable vacation' while completely ignoring thai people and culture all around them. They're not there to learn from Thailand, they're there for a vacation.
