The # is *not* an octothorp, as some claim. That was a just a joke. It's called a "number sign" or "pound sign" depending on how it's used. The ~ was originally a squished N, and it's called a "tilde" (altho some 'puter geeks call it a squiggle), but I don't know why it's called that.
