Looking at that vid, are base jump canopies packed differently to normal skydive canopies? These canopy deployments look as though they are packed the same as reserve canopies in normal skydive situations? Must be some G force on the jumpers.

@askewstuart base canopies are flat packed with no deployment bag. also depending on the height of the jump they may be packed with the slider down, or no slider at all.

@lolimfalling you are Partial correct.. except the "FLAT PACKED" part.. base canopies are PRO-PACKED... for forward facing deployment... flat packed would cause the jumper to turn 90 degrees to the left or right and probably smack into an building. they generally have larger Mesh Pilot chutes. and mesh sliders or no sliders at all depending on altitude.

they have only one!!! they prepare it for houers, there has to be no mistakes! but fuck its so dangerous, basejumping is crazy!! allot of people died from it...people make mistakes, and if you have 2 parachutes, its hard to make 2 mistakes at same time...SKYDIVING from 15000feet much much better =)

I wouldn't hope that on anyone. BASE parachutes are bigger and way less likely to have malfunctions. Most BASE guys have hundred or thousands of skydives and have a huge knowledge of how parachutes work and what to do if they dont. Skydive parachutes are way more likely to have some malfunctions because those are made for performance under canopy and are more complicated. BASE guys know how to fly their body in low wind conditions and are usually parachute riggers. No they do not have a backup.
