  • I love how this man puts his heart in soul into everything he sings.

  • far better than the kirsty version in my opinion

  • People get a grip, grow up, you'r all robots. This guy is class whatever his roots, a legend.

  • Sorry I love Christy Moore but this song just doesn't sound right if Shane isn't singing it.

  • What magnificent pipes this man has.

  • too of dem r legends.......fuk off hatin

  • christy moore is a genious!!!

  • Fuck Me!!!! Brilliant!! As much as I love Shane and Kirsty doing this tune, I think this might be the best version I've heard.

  • this is a great version.a great version of a great song.im humbled

  • story of everyones life, good song. after all the bullshit, nobody is or has anything, and everything is a fucking sick joke.

but carry on, im sure you all have important things to do. *sigh*

  • Shane McGowan isn't Irish

  • @bamper12

shane mcgowan is as irish as they some ya dick so what he was born in england on a family holiday irish blood makes him irish

  • @fuckthedrugsquad He's a fuckin brit, just like you

  • @bamper12 act i agree

  • @bamper12 He has an Irish passport, doesn't have a British passport. He was born in the UK, but just because you're born in a barn, doesn't mean you're a horse.

  • @macunfraidh What about them Jews who shot the Hamas leader last year, they had Irish passports. Charlie Haughy was well known for sellin them to yank actors who wanted to be Irish

  • @bamper12 he's irish , we(the irish) consider him irish and he considers himself irish

  • @solbirnbaum so the thought of me wankikng turns you on then?

  • That's very, very good. But, personally think, it's supposed to be a duet.

  • who is this amateur singing the song of a legend?? take it off youtube pls its just sick

  • @MariaKiely Christy moore is an irish legend y dont u get of youtube u stupid bitch

  • @howardsway01 Shane McGowan could also be called an Irish legend.... 'get of youtube'? sorry that just doesnt make sense.

  • 1;43 the redheaded lady was about to start the chorus a bit too soon lol, absolutly great song!

  • excellent - well spotted - hilarious.

What are they like? They look like something out of a home for the bewildered.

  • Man that guy's liver is strong. He looks good.

  • Both Christy and Shane are musical geniuses, christy does a great cover of this but kirsty and shane will always be the origional christmas song that brings a lump in ur throat

  • GREAT fucking cover

  • no, shane wrote it

  • your right, i was just mixed up

  • Mr Moore is doing this song justice. Great voice with intensity.

  • Best Christmas song EVER!!!

  • christy moore is an amazing singer but the pogues with kirsty mccoll is the best version of this song there ever will be

  • agree with u, the only cover of this song i respect is christy's :)... but anyways irish music rocks. ... cheers from norway :)

  • Christy Moore a great singer, but i do prefere the pogues version with kirsty

  • no contest mate no contest

  • would loved to have heard him sing it with kirsty macoll, no female can match kirsty singing this but christy beats shane.

kirsty and christy now thats got a ring to it.

  • what kind of post is that on a site where people are allowed to give their opinions? its not just shanes song btw, and im a pogues fan, so my opinion isnt anti shane. christy has always had a better voice than shane, and anyone with half a musical brain would know that. take your aggressive comments somewhere else.

  • @ronnoten shane has a much better voice

  • no one beats shane

  • i respect your opinion mate.

  • Just heard about him because he was involved with one of my favorite bands for the last 15 years Amsterdam formely Pele from Merseyside. Think Christy is great no wonder Prowsey wanted to work with him.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know what happened to that totally better version of him doin this song solo? twas on the latelate show (more recent)

  • christy is the man, best version of this song, hes a legend

  • i love the pogues but this is the best version of this song!

  • Brilliant version of a fantastic song. First time I've heard this.

  • never knew he did a version of this..its a savage one..can actually hear the lyrics clearly:P not putting Shane down but i much prefer this version:)Christy ever the legend.

  • Great version, Christy. Love that thick Irish brogue that is so prevalent in your voice.

  • Best Christmass song ever!

  • far prefer it to the pogues, shit hot christy again

  • I really really like Christy's version of Fairytale...but there's just nothing like Shane and Kirsty doing it together :)

  • amazing

  • beautiful, shane, Kristy and Christy were all made somewhere more beautiful!!!!!

  • moore sings truth on this one

  • tank you, myself should have been spelled "meself" by the way. Christy Moore is badass enough to sing a whole opera by himself. I've got cars big as bars and rivers of gold too. :)

  • would loved to have heard him sing this with kirsty maccoll, great solo version though.

  • i agree with jo sparkes

  • Sung very well, I like this version, and he sings it beautifully, it makes a change to hear all the words !

  • hahahaha yea true that

  • the song is written to be narrated by a drunk man... christy does a good job, but he doesn't get the whole drunkenness part right. only shane can.

  • Christy was once an alco

  • and what the fuck does that have to do with anything???? sure arent most people!

  • is that Maura O'Connell there too? and the other two women?

  • i am a fan of the Christy Moore version but there is nothing better then the rough voice of Shane McGowan and the smooth one of Kirsty McColl it was a song made to perfection. but a good version non the less

  • Maire Brennan is there!

He sings it very well, but no one will ever sing this song again the way Shane MacGowan did it.

  • amazing. i love irish singers

  • christy moore does it better than anyone.. hes a lyrical genius.. awesom vid!

  • He does not sing it better than Shane, there's something about Shane that make him perfect for this song. I hated his changing of lyrics and ayr to parts where it was not needed, I know he was trying to make it his own but it didn't work whatsoever.

  • It's not uncommon for Irish/Folk singers to alter lyrics. A lot of them, even Shane, change the words from one performance to another.

  • Of course I know that, but I think he ruined it still, the song is a meaningful song and his changes were bad. Even changing it to "I turned my eyes away and thought about you" doesn't seem to have the same effect as "I turned my face away and dreamed about you".

  • Thanks for posting this song....i had never heard it before......great singer also....i'ts now one of my favorites....thanks

  • Amen. I play this when I'm lonesome on Christmas. Or any other day.

  • both shane and christy are fucking legends love them both.

  • @richardwightman Wish this would let me vote this comment up more than once...

  • his voice is amazing, its just more commercial almost, feels strange to say that about the most overplayed pogues song ever but eh! shane just sang it more believably i reckon

  • The main reason I don't enjoy this version though is how he changed some of the lyrics. It ruined the meaning of the song and the mood. As well, he has a good voice but beg my pardon in saying, it doesn't fit the song (well it does for his because he made it a bit more PG (rather insulting imo for such a good song.))

  • Hes sings it better than Shane!

  • I love Christy's voice on this classic song, but I must admit I don't care much for the way he changed some of the lyrics around. I think it's fully reasonable to love both The Pogues and Christy's version of this song. :)

  • I love you baby too, Christy!!

  • Christy Moore is a legend

  • I agree with him. This was always meant to be an irish pub feely song. The only problem I disagree on is that Shane, having all those lost teeth sounds like crap. His voice is amazingly prefect for the song but it's impossible to understand imo which is why I prefer this.

  • personally i think shane is a crap singer an this vertion is a million times better....anyone agree ....lol

  • Hi Guys, anyone know who the lady backing singers are? what beautiful voices they have.

    damo

    East London

    England

  • I like this mainly because Christy, unlike the Pogues, doesn't turn it into a pub sing song halfway through. The original would have been better if Shane had sung it right through without "interruption".

  • can you change your settings to widescreen please ?

  • Fantastic performance as always.

  • Any chance youtube could allow 6 stars rating perhaps?

  • this one goes to eleven.

  • unbelievable

  • im gunna say somethiing controversial now. i believe this is a better version than Shane's own. Good on you Christy :=) x

  • and tthe bells were ringing out on christmas dayyy!!!

  • scientic fact: best song ever written; guarantees that Shane will get into Heaven when he meets Saint Peter regardless of what shennanigans he pulls on earth!

  • your full of shit

  • ha ha I dont know why I put that above comment in.

  • wow just wow makes me cry everytime

  • It's amazing how irrational people get when rattled. I never claimed anything about my own talent never mind suggesting that Christy Moore was not talented. And I am neither a computer geek nor someone who likes to pick faults in everything. I think Moore is a great singer and lyricist. But if I believe he is lip-synching I'll say it. And f*ck the begrudging b*stards who don't like it!

  • If stuff is merely out of sync the singer's lips eventually catch up. Moore could have been lip-synching La Marseillaise for all the relation the last few lines he was mouthing bore to the actual words we were hearing at any stage.

    Get over it knobjockey.

  • Mate, ur an arsehole, wee computer geek who like to pick fault in evrythin! Christy Moore has got more talent than u could ever dream, hes clearly singing live, if ur in doubt watch his peformance live at the point, he dosent need to ly sync, its folk music not top of the fukin pops!! p.s go do somthin productive with ur life!

  • grow up everthing on you tbe is outta sync ,,, twat

  • Check it out at 03.40 for the following seven or so seconds and it is clear he is lip-synching.

The spoken part at the end is also a dead giveaway.

  • you're mad if you think Christy would EVER lip synch

  • hahahaha y wud anyone lip sync talking?

  • your a fuckin twat tim,

  • When was this performed? I see Máire Brennan singing backing vocals!! Judging by her look I'd say this was early-mid nineties?

  • It was 1994

  • this is so eerily identical to earlier recordings, I wonder if he is lip-synching

  • lip-synching me arse.... not on the early late late show days....

  • Finally, a Christmans song that's not cheesy.

  • The is performance, amongst others by Christy, inspired me to leave behind the electric guitar and concentrate on acoustic. Thanks for posting, brought a tear to my eye.

  • me too

  • Of course it's fabulous...Christy doesn't do it any other way!

  • brilliant

  • NICE VID.
