Also, I was going to comment on the use of SSB to receive AM. This is a sign of an ardent AM DXer. Using SSB for AM reception is very handy to improve phase-distortion, which your use of the technique is a sign of a seasoned DXing veteran. I was an SWL way before I was a HAM; about 25-years now. Take care, Mark, and keep 'em coming. BTW, I am 50% Scottish; My mother's family name is Bruce and they came to the U.S.A. from Edinburgh in the 1870s.
Good job, Mark. I am a HAM, but I still have found some very good information in your videos. I am playing around with quite a few receive antenna designs; now, I think that I will add a EWE to the mix. I have several radios, but I find I like the sound of the AM receive of my Icom IC-718, which is just about the same radio as your IC-R75, but is a transceiver. I have radios with better RX, but the Icom just sounds so good on AM! Keep up the good work.
@kc8ntp Hi John...thanks for the comments...the EWE is the best antenna that i have discovered the noise floor of this antenna is awesome and on MW it performs great I would recommend the EWE to anyone who wants to seek out the real weak dx on the low bands....mind you this antenna receives very well on 14mhz also cheers and beers and thanks for stopping by Mark
Wow,That station is essentially "local" to me,impressive to see it heard thousands of miles away, what time of night or day was it at your location. 1100 is a 50,000 watt power house but your reception is amazing considering the distance,do you have a video of antenna used?
@MARKGM20877 When we were at solar minimum there was some very interesting DXing on the lower part of HF and medium-wave. I operate mobile HAM radio quite a bit, which I was able to talk to South Africa on 75m (3800kHz) from the mobile running 500 watts. I have a very high Q mobile antenna, but this would not have been possible at solar maximum; maybe it would, but it would not have been that easy.
Hard to beat that feeling when the propagation gods smile on ya like that.
All the best,
Jay
