i have a d90 and a sb700 coming my way in 2 or 3 days :) so i wanted to know if you could use the d90 build in flash to pre flash and trigger the sb700 but dont add the light from the d90 build in flash.
@cmgoskate Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, are 3rd party lens makers. They make lenses for both Nikon and Canon. Nikon and Canon on the other hand only make lenses for themselves and are not compatible with each other since they have different mounts. Although they do sell a mount converter to use Nikon lens on a Canon...But not the other way around.
I quickly noticed how the amount of light on the subject was unaffected while on the ambient light WAS affected when the shutter speed changed (was made brighter or darker). Why is this the case?
Greg, I just got a sb700 to go with my d7000. If I have the flash in TTL off camera and trigger it with the on camera pop up flash, the pop up flash seems to adds to the exposure of the photo. When I switch to manual on the flash it does not. Is this correct or am I wrong?
@js091402 If you're talking about CLS system, then no, the pop up flash does not ad extra flash to your SB700. The pop up flash fires, it hits the subject, the light reflects, the camera calculate the light and tells the SB700 the distance, power etc. All this happens so fast that it may seem like pop up and SB700 fired the same time but it doesn't.
I just have to say thanks for this. I've been trying to do OCF for ages and have had very little luck getting decent images. This has suddenly made things click into place.
good video gregster, as a beginner this is what i should of watched before i asked my daughter to bring grand kids round for a photo shoot !! man o man what a disaster
i gave up in the end. i might just send you a few shots so yo can laugh ur ass off
To date this was the best video you have produced. In terms of production value, information and personality; it is all very good. I really like what you and the Fro are doing, I am rooting for you guys to succeed to a super high level.
You guys need to make a LiL Rocks t-shirt, she is awesome!
When i do it this way by exposing first and then adding the flash the flash will just blow out everything even on hte lowest power and i cant always move it back and in turn i have to raise the aperture and then it starts effecting the ambient.
Good video Greg but I didn't like it when you said 'thick skull', I know you were probably only joking but you don't want to be patronising anyone - we're here to learn!
Just a quick correction, changing the amount of flash light (power) by changing the distance is a bad idea because it will change the quality of the light (hard/soft). You mention this at 2:41. Best to change the power either on the flash or through the camera via iTTL (Nikon) and not change the distance unless you want to change the quality of the light.
@jmason1973 Agreed, it will definitely change the QOL. Since this is a basic exposure video I didn't go into that but will in future videos. Sometimes you don't have a choice but to move the strobe, especially if you want minimum DOF.
Hey there, ill just like to say this is a great video/tutorial on flash photography. I plan to take the leap into flash soon but abit hesitatnt as i will need to learn how "light" works.
These videos you have made has helped me quite somebit.
Great video, thanks a lot for it. One question still remains. What about the photometer? Should it be considered when shooting with flash? On the video Greg just takes some pictures and looks for what he likes most.
Keep up the good work. I'm just a beginner and I am learning a lot with your videos.
im liking the flash series guys, very informative. From the little side notes to the full instructions, cant wait for future clips. Now i cant wait for my gear to arrive, getn antsy and i dont want all of this good info to slowly leak from my brain!! ;)
So what does ISO and Aperture actually do to the flash? It just says here that it affects it, but in what way? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this video a lot.
Greg - I've seen a few vids from you guys about flash, and portraits - but have you any that involve what your doing here with two SB's outside a studio or scene , with a model? I have two SB-600's and a D90 - would love some tips on how to best place flashes to get decent portrait pics in my front room!
Can you attach your BR strap to your tripod heads hex shaped quick release plate? I've been using my Bogen equipment for years and it would make things easier if I could attach it to my RS7. Thanks
what happens when I'm chaning the falsh from 1/64 power to e.g. 1/2 power?? I guess it does only change the power right? So does the flash constantly fire with 1/200th second in all power settings with just more power or does changing the power increase or decrease the time the flash "is fired"??
So what am I to do since I have a D3100? I plan on getting a Nikon Sb-28DX since I'm short on cash, but I really want to learn how to shoot off camera flash. Would wireless triggers be sufficient?
@jddonba The 700 is every so slightly less powerful while the 900 is decently stronger. There's faster flash refresh cycles, more manual buttons, useful switches for off/on/master/slave deal. You can google some reviews for specifics.
@tigre932 unfortunately not. You need a SB-600 700 800 or 900 series flash to use the CLS system. The SB-26 does have a built in slave which should work, but won't have all the features of the CLS system.
Thanks Greg. I'm a huge fan of Bert Stephani's works (along with the other light bouncer guys & girls) so am really looking forward to any advice you have regarding mastering strobing. Keep it up mate.
@devonly2 I disagree, using the camera on MANUAL is the only way to truly learn how it works and master it. When setting your camera on Shutter/Aperture/Program you let it make the decisions. Do you let your car drive itself? I want to decide on how the image looks, that's why I use Manual mode almost exclusively. Adding a strobe into the mix while on program mode will only make it more difficult, just letting the camera do what it wants.
Thanks for the Video Greg! Exactly what I had been looking for! I have been afraid to try Manual mode on the flash, always trusting in TTL but I find the flash is almost always too harsh. Can't wait to try this out!
Gregg very nice tutorial.. Very friendly approach and good explenation.. Just wondering what the WB was? Was it Auto because it seemed way off.. Or would you put it on Flash white balance? Thanks :)
@mkohman I set it custom in Lightroom afterwards. I agree that the background lights were quite warm but for this demo its not really an issue since its about learning to use the equipment.
Great teacher

@mike50333 Because your flash is of a really short duration, your ambient takes much longer to give your sensor the same amount of light
