  • Great teacher

  • Thanks Guys...I have learned so much..Best info spot I have found...

  • hello! watching this a question came to my mind.

i have a d90 and a sb700 coming my way in 2 or 3 days :) so i wanted to know if you could use the d90 build in flash to pre flash and trigger the sb700 but dont add the light from the d90 build in flash.

    Thanks for your time!

  • @naruto007666 yea you can pretty easy just set your d90 to the same channel as your flash make sure your flash is open and thats about it, good luck

  • im a beginner with flash photography... are nikon cameras only compatible with nikon flashes?

  • @cmgoskate are you serious.... its like macs working on a PC. doesn't happen. Nikon flashes work with nikon and canon with canon....

  • @nassalspray77 yeah im serious. i ask this cause for example you can use sigma lenses on a nikon.

  • @cmgoskate Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, are 3rd party lens makers. They make lenses for both Nikon and Canon. Nikon and Canon on the other hand only make lenses for themselves and are not compatible with each other since they have different mounts. Although they do sell a mount converter to use Nikon lens on a Canon...But not the other way around.

  • @cmgoskate you can use use nikon or cannon on eachother in manual or with radio triggers

  • akwarddd XD

  • I quickly noticed how the amount of light on the subject was unaffected while on the ambient light WAS affected when the shutter speed changed (was made brighter or darker). Why is this the case?

  • @mike50333 Because your flash is of a really short duration, your ambient takes much longer to give your sensor the same amount of light

  • Greg I'm gonna miss these videos...Jared's are entertaining but your videos TEACH me so much.

  • please do a lot of these flash tuts.. I am going for a flash :)

  • Greg, I just got a sb700 to go with my d7000. If I have the flash in TTL off camera and trigger it with the on camera pop up flash, the pop up flash seems to adds to the exposure of the photo. When I switch to manual on the flash it does not. Is this correct or am I wrong?

  • @js091402 If you're talking about CLS system, then no, the pop up flash does not ad extra flash to your SB700. The pop up flash fires, it hits the subject, the light reflects, the camera calculate the light and tells the SB700 the distance, power etc. All this happens so fast that it may seem like pop up and SB700 fired the same time but it doesn't.

  • Great video, not long got my D7000 with my SB-700 and this clears a few thing for me, Thanks

    Very new to photography :)

  • Awesome vid! It really clicked when seeing results at different shutter speeds.

  • what stand and stand accesories are you using for the SB-900?

  • Nice going Greg, really helpful, thank you. Cheers from Trinidad and Tobago (STEPPHAN2733 on FLICKR) :-)

  • I just have to say thanks for this. I've been trying to do OCF for ages and have had very little luck getting decent images. This has suddenly made things click into place.

  • GJ! again Greg

  • good video gregster, as a beginner this is what i should of watched before i asked my daughter to bring grand kids round for a photo shoot !! man o man what a disaster

i gave up in the end. i might just send you a few shots so yo can laugh ur ass off

  • You are the best Jared! =] Big Gday mate from Sydney Australia! :D

  • Groovy chops Greg.

  • @gregorycazillo thanks greg!!

  • this is a great video for beginner. thanks again.

  • Greg:

To date this was the best video you have produced. In terms of production value, information and personality; it is all very good. I really like what you and the Fro are doing, I am rooting for you guys to succeed to a super high level.

You guys need to make a LiL Rocks t-shirt, she is awesome!

  • @scoe4 Thanks for the compliment.

  • When i do it this way by exposing first and then adding the flash the flash will just blow out everything even on hte lowest power and i cant always move it back and in turn i have to raise the aperture and then it starts effecting the ambient.

  • @AlTyler138 thats where you need to adjust your shutter to compensate.

  • Nice one, look forward to more, love the wood floor man.

  • I clicked an ad. Thanks for videos

  • Good video Greg but I didn't like it when you said 'thick skull', I know you were probably only joking but you don't want to be patronising anyone - we're here to learn!

  • Just a quick correction, changing the amount of flash light (power) by changing the distance is a bad idea because it will change the quality of the light (hard/soft). You mention this at 2:41. Best to change the power either on the flash or through the camera via iTTL (Nikon) and not change the distance unless you want to change the quality of the light.

Great stuff though, thanks for doing the videos.

  • @jmason1973 Agreed, it will definitely change the QOL. Since this is a basic exposure video I didn't go into that but will in future videos. Sometimes you don't have a choice but to move the strobe, especially if you want minimum DOF.

  • Hey there, ill just like to say this is a great video/tutorial on flash photography. I plan to take the leap into flash soon but abit hesitatnt as i will need to learn how "light" works.

These videos you have made has helped me quite somebit.

Keep up the good work. You explain things well.

  • I love your videos Greg! You are great.

  • Good job Greg. Defiantly the best video you've made yet,

  • Master/Slave - 1st time I have ever really understood the word slave haha!

    AWESOME video as always guys!

    cant wait for the rest!!

    <3

  • Great video, thanks a lot for it. One question still remains. What about the photometer? Should it be considered when shooting with flash? On the video Greg just takes some pictures and looks for what he likes most.

Keep up the good work. I'm just a beginner and I am learning a lot with your videos.

  • @cswsawatzky That will be a future video.

  • ok well if this is the "basic" flash photography , show me advanced please

  • @Thaikid13 Its all coming...give it time.

  • Ah i see greg is growing his own Fro now!

  • Better than the arrogant bs from Jared

  • hello, that was a really great video,, think the photos would be better if it was lightened through a softbox !! really great job Greg, keep it on !

And Jared, I've uploaded a video, and it was for you !! check it out on my channel

tell me what do think plz, thanks

  • @So0001me Future videos will include modifiers.

  • did you add a CTO to he flash to adjust white balance? If not, any reasons why?

  • @lukasgisbert This is just a basic video explaining exposure, future videos will go into white balance and filters.

  • did you add a CTO to he flash to adjust white balance?

  • Excellent video Greg, learnt so much...made it simple and easy to understand.

  • Greg your the man

  • I really loved this! Thanks Greg :D

  • u got Chinese table

  • Great video Greg! Please keep them coming.

  • Awesome lesson Greg and Fro!

  • Thanks for the video explaining flash photography. Is there a shutter speed too fast to use flash? Just wondering. Thanks again ACB

  • Why doesnt Greg make his own channel?

  • im liking the flash series guys, very informative. From the little side notes to the full instructions, cant wait for future clips. Now i cant wait for my gear to arrive, getn antsy and i dont want all of this good info to slowly leak from my brain!! ;)

    Thanks again!!!

  • So what does ISO and Aperture actually do to the flash? It just says here that it affects it, but in what way? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this video a lot.

  • Greg is such a cool guy, I'd love him to teach workshops I could attend.

  • @speckyprick Changes the exposure.

  • Greg - I've seen a few vids from you guys about flash, and portraits - but have you any that involve what your doing here with two SB's outside a studio or scene , with a model? I have two SB-600's and a D90 - would love some tips on how to best place flashes to get decent portrait pics in my front room!

  • @jddonba Its all coming....

  • Why aren't there any photos in the hallway?

  • @GreenShutter1 oops Bogen...not Boget lol.

  • Thank you so much for this series! I'm learning a lot :)

  • @GreenShutter1 Boget (now Manfrotto) 3047.

  • have you guys given out the black rapid straps yet?

  • @patmelton1295 not yet that ends the 26th i think. We will make a video letting you know who wins.

  • Can you attach your BR strap to your tripod heads hex shaped quick release plate? I've been using my Bogen equipment for years and it would make things easier if I could attach it to my RS7. Thanks

  • @geomox4 not to the hex pate i dont think.

  • @JaredPolin thanks Jared.

  • @geomox4 I tried it, doesn't work.

  • @gregorycazillo thanks Greg.

  • Honestly, I think this is the most helpful video I've seen from you guys. Keep up the great work Greg; I'm excited to see the rest of this series.

  • Thank you....

  • Great video! Thanks! I know what I'm going to be doing all evening.

  • what happens when I'm chaning the falsh from 1/64 power to e.g. 1/2 power?? I guess it does only change the power right? So does the flash constantly fire with 1/200th second in all power settings with just more power or does changing the power increase or decrease the time the flash "is fired"??

  • @34TR3m Not sure how that works but you are increasing the light by 5 stops.

  • how to photograph with FLASh people who are JUMPING and FREEZZING THEM on the air?????

  • Cool, thanks

  • I think Greg needs some more excitement!!!

  • So what am I to do since I have a D3100? I plan on getting a Nikon Sb-28DX since I'm short on cash, but I really want to learn how to shoot off camera flash. Would wireless triggers be sufficient?

  • @QuannieBoy I suggest going with the SB-600 700 800 or 900 series flash. I doubt the TTL works when using the SB-28DX with a D3100.

  • @gregorycazillo Though the SB600 is now being discontinued, I love using it. I'd probably opt out for the 700 next though.

  • @eleventhphotograph I have a couple of SB-600's - whats the improvement with the 700 or even 900's?

  • @jddonba The 700 is every so slightly less powerful while the 900 is decently stronger. There's faster flash refresh cycles, more manual buttons, useful switches for off/on/master/slave deal. You can google some reviews for specifics.

  • Thanks Greg

  • Great vid Greg!! Keep em coming!!

  • Awesome, thanks a lot Greg. You are awesome at this :)

  • more interesting than my photo class.

  • Greg's song rules!

  • I learned something! Thanks so much Greg, great lesson!

  • this is really great greg .. i like your way in teaching .. there is a lot amount of information .. great job ..

does the D3s need an external flash on it to work as a commander ? .. or it has it's own built in commander like the D300 ? ..

    regards

    Yazeed al-shaibani

  • @sondos006 The D3s requires a device, external flash or radio trigger, as it doesn't have a built in flash to use as a commander.

  • can i use a sb-26 like the 900?

i will use it with the nikon d80

    please respond

  • @tigre932 unfortunately not. You need a SB-600 700 800 or 900 series flash to use the CLS system. The SB-26 does have a built in slave which should work, but won't have all the features of the CLS system.

  • nice one

  • and by the way when setting the flash exposure i only change the camera's setting,

how can i change the flash's power? and it would be nice if you make a built in flash setting guide or something like that

  • isnt it better to set the shutter speed slower than the flash and low arpeture and iso?

so the flash works for only half the exp. time? than you have a clean bright photo with low iso,

  • Thankssss ! Very helpful ! :)

  • Thanks Greg for this, good learning :)

  • Thanks Greg. I'm a huge fan of Bert Stephani's works (along with the other light bouncer guys & girls) so am really looking forward to any advice you have regarding mastering strobing. Keep it up mate.

  • Excellent tutorial! Keep the coming Greg! Real helpful

  • Thank you Greg! Like to see more of these ! :)

  • he is a great teahcer

  • @DeShonDixonHD Aperture priority or AV as canon calls it is a good place to start :) control to depth of field kinda like auto mode tbh

  • @devonly2 I disagree, using the camera on MANUAL is the only way to truly learn how it works and master it. When setting your camera on Shutter/Aperture/Program you let it make the decisions. Do you let your car drive itself? I want to decide on how the image looks, that's why I use Manual mode almost exclusively. Adding a strobe into the mix while on program mode will only make it more difficult, just letting the camera do what it wants.

  • @gregorycazillo he asked a question in caps, he needs the basics clearly :) And aperture mode is easy to understand and a good stepping stone.

  • Thank you so much for this series. Really looking forward to learning how to use off camera flash better. Thanks again!

  • @gregorycazillo Very useful. Thanks Greg! =)

  • @devonly2 Your an asshole, why would you be that way? You must be an angry person.

  • @devonly2 You need to grow up.

  • Nicely done! Lookinf forward to the next vid

  • Thanks for the Video Greg! Exactly what I had been looking for! I have been afraid to try Manual mode on the flash, always trusting in TTL but I find the flash is almost always too harsh. Can't wait to try this out!

  • Gregg very nice tutorial.. Very friendly approach and good explenation.. Just wondering what the WB was? Was it Auto because it seemed way off.. Or would you put it on Flash white balance? Thanks :)

  • @mkohman I set it custom in Lightroom afterwards. I agree that the background lights were quite warm but for this demo its not really an issue since its about learning to use the equipment.

  • Very useful thanks

by the way what,s the name of the song in the beginning ??

  • @iceANDdice Its custom music we had someone create for us.

  • @gregorycazillo really liked it !!

  • Very usefull , thank you for your effort !
