LSD fall in to major categories: Torque sensitive, like Torsen, Quaife, Haldex.
And speed sensitive - viscous and electronic differentials, or E-diffs, which basically use abs, speed sensors and an actuator to push the clutch plates.
It pains me to admit it (as a Subaru owner) but the Audi has better power bias characteristics. The Audi is better balanced in the snow, while the WRX tends to plow around with not much throttle steering.
Nice vid. Very impressed with how the heavier Audi did not understeer nearly as much as the subie. Of course the driver makes a difference, but even that aside the subie really just plowed forward almost regardless of steering input.
I own a subaru and have driven audi's and I really cant tell that much of a difference between them. I can say for sure that both are much better than any of the other systems I have tried... like @SuperleggeraVW said, it really is all the driver... you can tell they have to be close due to the fact that I can't find any awd tests comparing audi and subaru. It makes sense, why would you try to market your system by comparing it to another that is just as good?
as a matter of fact - to follow up on the last comment I made - a Jeep Grand Cherokee does not even have a more capable AWD system for off-roading that a Subaru or Audi. Why? They only have traction control and limited-slip differentials now. They took off the mechanical locks.... so the only advantage would be height clearance. I'm sure they got rid of them because of fuel economy and complexity. It isn't worth it when most people NEVER go off-road. People buying them don't even know!!!
As a Jeep lover and now an Audi owner I've gotta admit you're correct.
The fact of the matter is that soccer moms want to feel safe in their Grand Cherokees as they drive through snow which means basic AWD and low ride height. It's AWD vs 4x4.
The old Jeeps (like my old XJ) really don't do that well on icy roads. Sure you can lock in the 4x4 but that's locking the front wheel speed to the rear which is only good off road and horrible for corners.
Haljátok ott mind 2 elég képzett volt!!És a subarus is tud driftelni!!Ha te anyira tucc gyere el Magyarországra hisz ez ott van!!Azon belül egy kis faluba/községbe!!Ladánybenén!!!
the guy driving the subi just sell your car you need to learm how to drive shit all that power and cant even do a decent drift props for the audi he knows what hes doing
The guy in the subaru should learn how to drift. The guy in the Audi does an insanely better job. People need to learn the driver is just as important as the car. Also the Audi might be a better car but the Suby sounds a hell of allot better.
Audi and Subaru fans should stop fighting, team up and just laugh at everyone else, because the reality is they are both great cars, and their AWD systems are both way ahead of the rest.
Ahead in what. Subaru uses viscous coupling, and Audi uses torsen. You can argue that viscous couplings put the power where its needed better, but they wear out. The torsen is far more reliable.
Neither are really ideal for offroading in SUV's, and the subaru system, unless it is the sti which is a different system, over heats and wears out very fast on mud/snow when being pushed, ie rally. So how is Scubi ahead? Its another system, with pros and cons. The average driver wont see a difference
@SuperleggeraVW whatever they use works in wrc...and it works in my dads 96 impreza with over 235k miles on it...awd still works fine...as does everything else...find me an audi that can match that
In rally they use a different system... And if you don't drive it hard it wont wear out. And the torsen in an Audi will last that long for sure, its just a set of gears, it will always outlast the engine/trans etc.
Superleggera - you are right - this are road cars and not AWD systems for heavy offroad use. The original quatrros were - but they were too heavy - so Audi took away the mechanical locking differentials. Only truck based SUV's have real off-road 4WD (not necessarily AWD) systems. Most SUV's don't have them - so Audi and Subaru sedans both will perform than most cross-over based SUV's in bad weather. The only time the SUV would have the advantage is when ground clearance is an issue.
Yes, but the Impreza STI is light years ahead of the quattoro.
Mechanical differentials simply can`t be compared to open differentials.
The point is that the torsen type 3 is a very good differential, but VAG uses open differentials for the front and rear, which are a piece of shit, but they are cheap as fuck.
So quattro looks good only on paper.
By the way, the new xDrive uses a Haldex - style gearbox clutch and LSD in the rear.
@Soulshreder Mechanical diffs can't compare with open diffs? Open diffs are mechanical, that makes no sense.
I'd don't care what VAG does, I put aftermarket torsens front and rear, so no more open diffs.
I think your missing too much information. Your confusing and mixing together types of diffs with marketing names of AWD.
Haldex is a clutch pack at the centre diff in some VAG's and xdrive. To say its better then quattro because quattro has open diffs front and rear makes no sense.
By mechanical differentials, I meant geared LSD type. Subaru uses geared LSD`s on the STI, and viscous on the regular models.
VAG only uses open differentials for the front and rear, they used LSD on the rear in the 80`s . An open differential is the cheapest, but shittiest way to transfer power to the wheels. It will always spin the wheel with the least resistance to friction.
i no they are so different, at least $20,000 price diff, about $20,000 of features and luxury difference. But that don't change the fact that both can play around in the winter a little
Well im used to quattro like you can see in my vids, but i drifted an wrx once in rain an compairing those 2 cars i still dont quiet know why i bought myself an audi again afta crashing my old one...
as i saw it is....on the back of the car it says 2.7T but the engine also is V6....that's what made me believe that it's a rs6!i thought that the engine says V8....

Also, to clear the differential issue.
There are 3 major categories of differentials.
Open diffs, which suck big time.
Limited slip aka LSD.
And locking diffs.
LSD fall in to major categories: Torque sensitive, like Torsen, Quaife, Haldex.
And speed sensitive - viscous and electronic differentials, or E-diffs, which basically use abs, speed sensors and an actuator to push the clutch plates.
