@highskyeagle yes, it kinda looks like that. Scott does the wave off, then the instructor grabs his arm trying to place it on the ripcord handle, he cant see at this point that Scott is about to pull the cutaway. But the fact is that Scott is the one that pulls the cutaway.
Curious that it is the instructor moves his hand to the cutaway handle.
The american commentator is a moron. Not even a car is idiotproof, why should skydiving be idiotproof? Almost nothing can prevent an idiot form turning something perfectly sane in to something stupid
What an idiot, first he cuts away (perhaps its not the case) but the number 1 rule you have to follow is if ur chute dosent open in 4 seconds (you have about 12 before hitting the ground, 12 seconds and lots of adrenalin) then u pull your reserve
What a retard. He grabed the cutaway-handle when it was time to dump his main. The instructor had to activate his main. He didn't remember the emergency procedure. And, he manages to hit the powerlines. Stupid people shouldn't skydive. Darwin-award.
@darkrie7 Incase your parachute gets tangled in somthing, People have gotten their parachutes tangeled on the plane when deploying too early, so they need to cut away and deploy reserve chutes.
@darkrie7 You need a cut away handle in case your first parachute tangles and you need to get rid of it before you can open your reserve chute. simple really.
1. He pulled the wrong handle 2. he didn't know how to pull the reserve chute 3. usually u have a cypress which opens ur reserve chute if ur unconcious 4. he flew into the powerlines --> either it's a really really REALLY bad skydiving school or he's a complete idiot! Or both. (the missing cypress is definitly the school's fault)
He's not unlucky at all, he's just a fucking idiot. I don't see how he could sit through an 8 hour AFF class and not know which handle to pull. He pulled his cut away cord, (the cord you use to CUT your main parachute away incase of an emergency) Then he's dumb enough to fly his parachute into fucking powerlines.... Everything he did was his own fault. Definitely one of the dumbest students I've seen in a LONG time.
it's so clear that he did not reach for the pilot chute next to his butt, he did no practices touches, you see the instructor pulling his hand back toward the main handle BUT he stops his arm from going back and grabs the cutaway, totally releasing his main; this was not a malfunction but a major mistake. and they do train you that if you pull that particular handle, ya gotta go for the other reserve handle, which he finally did find and use
thats not fucking unlucky ! THATS FUCKING STUPID ! first cutaway instead of pulling the main chute and then land the reserve in some power lines :/ i bet he stopped skydiving because his instructors kicked him out of school
Complete butt-head! 8 years to become a moron! It took me less than a year to get to freefall and the training was bril! The fact that he hit power lines shows how badly planned the jump zone is!
1st of all, you can't be stupid if you are not in controll. Last time I checked, you don't have power over gravity or wind. So he's not stupid. Second, he is a new skydiver. He doesn't know what to do if something like this happens until you had it happen to yourself. You people who are making fun of him should lay off cause there are way more idiots out there that are much worse. The chute didn't work so its not his faut. What happens if it was you. You wouldn't think its funny.
@CrimsonBradders I was just saying that it wasn''t his fault. If the wind blows you in one direction you can't change it. Just like falling. You can't controll gravity or wind. People who blame the guy for screwing up don't really think it through. If the wind was calm then it might be more understandable. He probably got blown towards the power lines and he is new. We all have stengths and weaknesses. His weakness is flying. Plus you start to panic because its something new and confusing.
@Darkwolf242511 If the winds blows you in one directions you cant change it?! What do think, that skydivers just ride the wind and land in some random location? Lol!! You steer your canopy, and land in the designated landing area, its quite simple.. There are strict restrictions about wind conditons for student jumpers, so the winds are not an issue, Scott is the issue.
@fettspinn Im not making it up. All I was saying is that a parachute+wind=Very bad day. So yeah, I may not know everything but what I do know is that this guy is new, he's having such a blast that he screws up. No ones perfect so don't act like you know everything. I mean give the guy a break, he's new and just had a few thousand volts. Plus if you watch the part where he pulls the chute, I notice a instructers hand leading his hand to the cord. So its the instructors fault too.
@Darkwolf242511 strong winds + patachue is bad, so thas why we measure the wind speeds, on the ground, and also futher up,to make sure that its safe before we jump. The instructor tried to lead his hand to the actual ripcord, but Scott held on and grabbed the cutaway handle instead. The thing is,that this idiot is on national TV saying that he was so unlucky blabla and his chute malunctioned, which is NOT true! He screwed up bigtime, and pretty much made all the mistakes you possibly can
@Darkwolf242511 New skydivers are very well trained what to do in emergency situations, but this idiot Scott, even fails to pull the right handle, he pulls the handle that releases the main canopy, if you have a main malfunction, and the best part is that he doent realize that it was his own fault, the equipment worked perfectly, it did what it is designed to do. So please stop making comments about something you dont know shit about.
Students are there to learn, but as one of our friends said there must be either a RSL or a Skyhook connected to the main chute, specially when students are jumping. It's clearly an instructors fault not only for omitting the RSL system but also for not noticing that the student pulled the main chute release, ohh such mess
"I don't think they trained me for what happens if the whole chute flies away"... doh, yeah they did... they trained you to pull the reserve. Thay also trained you not to pull the cutaway for no reason, because it will, er 'cutatway' your main. I'm so glad he says he'll never jump again.
muito estupidamente burro comandou o desconector do velame principal(repare no vídeo ele puxa o desconector do velame) ao invés de comanda-lo somente,
@BlatantlyBritt Why would you assume he wasn't "trained very well."?
Perhaps he ignored all his training? Pulled the wrong handle, couldn't remember what to do when he didn't have a canopy open, didn't steer his canopy, let go of his handles. I can't imagine the instructors failed to provide training for all of his problems.
@sampep exactly, he pulled the cutaway handle, so what happens when he fails to pull his ripcord handle, and the instructor have to do it for him? The main starts deploying, it then releases from the 3 ring system, because the idiot Scott has pulled the cutaway ;-)
first of all. hes dumb for pulling his cutaway handle instead of throwing his pilot chute. everything did what it was supposed to do and i agree with kstar and everyone else. he could have avoided the powerlines. AFF Cat A: Fail. if at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
His parachute DID NOT malfunction. It did exactly what it was designed to do. He initially pulled his cutaway handle, which releases the main. That's why you see it flying away when the instructor pulls. There is no excuse for hitting the power lines. He had plenty of time to turn and avoid them
his main ripped away because instead of grabbing his ripcord he grabbed his main cut away handle (0:26), so when the chute was finally deployed it went bye bye...not paying attention during class were we? during class they also teach you how to turn so you dont do stuff like hit powerlines. everything that went wrong was because he didnt pay attention to the instructors
thats like fait saying "FUCK YOU!" think about it...your first chute completelly rips off....how often does that happen? I imagine not alot then you finally find your back up and you float into power lines hahahahahahha Epic owned.
obviously he didnt know what he was doing, or even know what he did wrong after it happened. either poor training or the guy is a retard. but i think the guy is a retard
Gee, first he pulls his CUT-AWAY handle instead of his PILOT chute. The AFF instructor's not watching Scott's hands, let's it happen, fails to NOTICE it happened and THEN DIRECTS SCOTT'S hand TO his pilot chute pull-out and HELPS him deploy what is INEVITABLY going to be an automatic cutaway malfunction?. Poor student training, poor instructor performance!
The instructors acted correctly he was guiding his hand to his ripcord (yes its a ripcord rig not a throwout pilot chute) and scott stoped at his cutaway, the instructor was completely aware of this and struggled with scott to get his hand to his ripcord (notice the instructor go unstable in the struggle). The instructor then quickly pulls scotts ripcord to clear the disconnected main which is correct procedure. The instructors didnt make any mistakes by this video alone.
You have a good eye, but I tend to agree with "goingtoeatpizza". It is clear that the instructor did a good job of trying to force his hand away from the cut-away, but Scott just kept going for it (he didn't pay much attention in class, or practice the movement until second nature) After the instructor sees him pull the cut-away, he immediately pulls Scott's main to get it out of the reserves way, since it is useless now.
so everyone keeps saying the guy pulled his cutaway cable. i tried searching info on this but couldn't find what i needed....so can someone please explain why you would need to use something that disconnects your main parachute?...im guessing you would want to disconnect if it gets tangled as you are falling, that way you can pull your emergency chute instead. but i don't know much about skydiving.
This has NOTHING TO DO WITH LUCK....That is sheer jumper error, TWICE. He was trained and all the procedures were discussed as it always happens in drop zones. Then, when he jumped, he was too nervous and adrenalized and made two CLUTZ mistakes...Cutting away his main parachute AND not steering the reserve. He needs to learn a bit more and pace himself or he will die.
he forgot all the instruccion arch rich touch arc rich touch again lol 6.000 5.500 wave off arch rich PULLLLLLLLL 4000 3000 2000 1000 canopy control and a safe landing that simple just for real mens
@sasivimon there was no luck involved and hes blatantly lying the equipment didnt fail. He cut his own chute away in freefall by pulling his cutaway handle instead of his ripcord and all he had to do to avoid the powerlines was turn.
Truth is, Scott Lutz just dont need to skydive, its not his thing... Dumb ass took like a 6 hour class before jumping... RED handle means cut away, he pulled it instead of his main... He freaked and that is why his chute "didnt open", it was never a failure with the chute. Then he pulls his reserve, these things turn on a dime pretty much... Open field and he hits power lines.. got scared and acted like a dumb ass. Lets just hope u dont reproduce there Scott!!!
It's just about math, he was already alive before the jump and he happened to be as unlucky than lucky during the fall, so the result comes back to the beginning. He stays alive!
@6031042 The rest of the world is unlucky that idiot stayed alive to polute the gene pool.
Not only is he a complete idiot but hes a liar. The gear functioned as directed by the student, he cut it away. He knew it was his fault after the jump but lied about it for profit.
this guy is a complete retard, he didnt pull his chute he pulled his fucking cut away handle, the instructor pulled his pilot and couldnt see the cutaway handle being pulled. as for landing in power lines thats just complete fucking stupidity on his part

Personally I think you're lying.
They were negligent without question.
Show me your proof. His brain isn't responsible for providing safe equipment that's been inspected properly. His brain didn't will the shoot to tear free of the harness.
Unless you have proof I can validate, I say you're completely full of shit.
@JonDeth Scott Lutz pulled his cutaway cable which disconnected his own main parachute in freefall. The instructor struggled in vein to get his hand to his hip where his ripcord is. The instructor then quickly pulls scotts ripcord (to clear the disconnected main).
As for the reserve this was inflated and flying fine, scott failed to steer it.
All of this is clearly visible on the video.
The equipment did not fail, it functioned correctly as directed by the operator (Scott Lutz).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Watch the video again.
Scott isn't doing anything, the instructor grabs his hand and FORCES him to pull a ripcord. In doing so, Scott doesn't look and grabs the wrong one to the instructors panic!
That's when the instructor pulls the proper one but the cutaway cord has already been pulled.
He still has a strong case as his hand was FORCED. They should have motioned to him to pull the cord, it's likely he would have looked rather than trust his hand was sent in the right direction.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Prove he lost, where is your evidence?
My evidence is right their on the tape. The instructor FORCES him to pull a ripcord! He should have motioned for him to do so, that way Lutz would have LOOKED to see the proper cord. Instead he trusts the instructor forcing his hand and doesn't look.
The instructor fucked up and I guarantee Lutz got some cash out of this. The instructor was negligent and would definitely be found partly responsible for the chain of events.
@JonDeth Scott forced the instructor to the cutaway not the other way around. Not only is the notion that an instructor would make a student pull the wrong handle absolutely absurd to start with, you can clearly see the instructor lose stability fighting with him as he (Scott) is pulling the cutaway.
This is backed up by the fact that Scott lied by claiming he pulled the correct cord and the chute broke free.
Guiding students hands to their main deployment handle is correct procedure for AFF. The instructors acted professionally within regulations and the gear functioned as directed by the student.
If you think there is a better way to train students then petition the USPA to change the operational regulations. However if you dont want to look like a complete idiot as you have here, I suggest you actually get some skydiving experience first.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're completely pointless, he physically forces his hand. Any judge or jury can see it as plain as the nose on your face. It's not wind resistance, it's not guiding<-LMAO! He blatantly FORCES his hand when he should have motioned for him to pull the cord.
Stop waisting my time, you're all just annoying at this point.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It doesn't take credential to see the guy force his hand once only to have Scott pull away, then he grabs his hand a SECOND time and forces it again only to succeed.
You're going to argue with me, lose a thousand times then try to reference a fucking typo!
Get bent, you're a loser grasping for anything you can to degrade me. You want to degrade me, do it to my face you fucking internet pussy.
Otherwise stfu and face facts, the guys hand was forced TWICE, the instructor is negligent.
I don't usually associate with people whose I.Q. seems to be a standard deviation or more below the mean, as evidenced by there command of simple grammar. Therefore I will pass on the opportunity to meet you in person.
Your logic, It doesnt take credential(sic) to see is amazing. I thought it would require some knowledge to make an insightful comment on certain subjects.
I would like to nominate you for an honorary USPA E license, you have earned it!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Associate nothing, you came here to pick a fight so pick a fight!
Otherwise piss off and leave me alone, I've tolerated harassment from you people all day.
Bottom line is I'm seeing exactly what happened. The guys hand was forced twice, legally it makes the instructor negligent.Throwing your credentials around doesn't change what transpires on video so unless you're the idiot that did this to the poor bastard, accept that nobody is perfect including people in your field.
Fortunately for the sport, most people accept the consequences of there action.
Those who dont, discover (as I understand the situation) that the assumption of risk they signed will affect their chances of winning anything in a court, short of someone committing gross negligence. You may argue the instructor committed gross negligence, however I think he didnt.
Based on what Scott (or I suspect you) discovered in the lawsuits that were filed as a result of this jump, the courts agreed, did not find gross negligence, and the defendants prevailed.
Fate just couldn't decide wether or not to kill him

His parachute DID NOT malfunction. It did exactly what it was designed to do. He initially pulled his cutaway handle, which releases the main. That's why you see it flying away when the instructor pulls. There is no excuse for hitting the power lines. He had plenty of time to turn and avoid them
kstarczak 1 year ago 4
@kstarczak
Spot on analysis from what I saw, plus Scott had prime example of hazard fixation rather than steering away.
foxtrotzeroalpha 11 months ago
his main ripped away because instead of grabbing his ripcord he grabbed his main cut away handle (0:26), so when the chute was finally deployed it went bye bye...not paying attention during class were we? during class they also teach you how to turn so you dont do stuff like hit powerlines. everything that went wrong was because he didnt pay attention to the instructors

obviously he didnt know what he was doing, or even know what he did wrong after it happened. either poor training or the guy is a retard. but i think the guy is a retard
Gravitybandit79 1 year ago
Gee, first he pulls his CUT-AWAY handle instead of his PILOT chute. The AFF instructor's not watching Scott's hands, let's it happen, fails to NOTICE it happened and THEN DIRECTS SCOTT'S hand TO his pilot chute pull-out and HELPS him deploy what is INEVITABLY going to be an automatic cutaway malfunction?. Poor student training, poor instructor performance!
damonhearne1 1 year ago
The instructors acted correctly he was guiding his hand to his ripcord (yes its a ripcord rig not a throwout pilot chute) and scott stoped at his cutaway, the instructor was completely aware of this and struggled with scott to get his hand to his ripcord (notice the instructor go unstable in the struggle). The instructor then quickly pulls scotts ripcord to clear the disconnected main which is correct procedure. The instructors didnt make any mistakes by this video alone.
goingtoeatpizza 1 year ago 2
@damonhearne1

@sasivimon there was no luck involved and hes blatantly lying the equipment didnt fail. He cut his own chute away in freefall by pulling his cutaway handle instead of his ripcord and all he had to do to avoid the powerlines was turn.
goingtoeatpizza 1 year ago
Truth is, Scott Lutz just dont need to skydive, its not his thing... Dumb ass took like a 6 hour class before jumping... RED handle means cut away, he pulled it instead of his main... He freaked and that is why his chute "didnt open", it was never a failure with the chute. Then he pulls his reserve, these things turn on a dime pretty much... Open field and he hits power lines.. got scared and acted like a dumb ass. Lets just hope u dont reproduce there Scott!!!

This is the luckiest unlucky man I've ever seen!
It's just about math, he was already alive before the jump and he happened to be as unlucky than lucky during the fall, so the result comes back to the beginning. He stays alive!

@6031042 The rest of the world is unlucky that idiot stayed alive to polute the gene pool.

I hope he sued the company for millions!
No matter what he signed, they were liable the second that shoot broke free of the harness. Negligence!
Then he ends up in power lines, lmao.
Multimillion dollar civil suit no problem, their insurance would pay through the nose and they'd be out of business for good.
JonDeth 2 years ago
Firemanflyer says it best, and that applies to JonDeth as well as Lutz.
JonDeth do you have any idea of what you are talking about? I didn't think so. Lutz made many errors, and did sue everybody in the world, and lost.
Lutz's chute didn't malfunction, his brain malfunctioned, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say it never functioned.
jjdiver 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Personally I think you're lying.
They were negligent without question.
Show me your proof. His brain isn't responsible for providing safe equipment that's been inspected properly. His brain didn't will the shoot to tear free of the harness.
Unless you have proof I can validate, I say you're completely full of shit.
JonDeth 2 years ago
@JonDeth Scott Lutz pulled his cutaway cable which disconnected his own main parachute in freefall. The instructor struggled in vein to get his hand to his hip where his ripcord is. The instructor then quickly pulls scotts ripcord (to clear the disconnected main).
As for the reserve this was inflated and flying fine, scott failed to steer it.
All of this is clearly visible on the video.
The equipment did not fail, it functioned correctly as directed by the operator (Scott Lutz).
goingtoeatpizza 2 years ago 25

Watch the video again.
Scott isn't doing anything, the instructor grabs his hand and FORCES him to pull a ripcord. In doing so, Scott doesn't look and grabs the wrong one to the instructors panic!
That's when the instructor pulls the proper one but the cutaway cord has already been pulled.
He still has a strong case as his hand was FORCED. They should have motioned to him to pull the cord, it's likely he would have looked rather than trust his hand was sent in the right direction.
DUH
JonDeth 2 years ago
Not worth arguing with whuffos who don't haven't taken the time to figure out what a red pud is.
May you have as much success as Lutz had in all his lawsuits.
jjdiver 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Prove he lost, where is your evidence?

This is why he has no case.
goingtoeatpizza 2 years ago 5
@JonDeth Further to that (and hopefully finally)
Guiding students hands to their main deployment handle is correct procedure for AFF. The instructors acted professionally within regulations and the gear functioned as directed by the student.
If you think there is a better way to train students then petition the USPA to change the operational regulations. However if you dont want to look like a complete idiot as you have here, I suggest you actually get some skydiving experience first.

JonDeth 2 years ago
Learn how to spell!
Have you ever studied the USPA SIM? Have your USPA license? Any USPA rating?
If none of the above apply (except that you need to learn how to spell), then how are you such an expert in skydiving? What are your credentials?
jjdiver 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
It doesn't take credential to see the guy force his hand once only to have Scott pull away, then he grabs his hand a SECOND time and forces it again only to succeed.
JonDeth 2 years ago
I don't usually associate with people whose I.Q. seems to be a standard deviation or more below the mean, as evidenced by there command of simple grammar. Therefore I will pass on the opportunity to meet you in person.
Your logic, It doesnt take credential(sic) to see is amazing. I thought it would require some knowledge to make an insightful comment on certain subjects.
I would like to nominate you for an honorary USPA E license, you have earned it!
jjdiver 2 years ago
Please stop by any drop zone, show them this thread, and I would bet that you would be treated to a complimentary first jump.
I wonder if your first name isnt Scott.
jjdiver 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Associate nothing, you came here to pick a fight so pick a fight!
Oh god forbid!
JonDeth 2 years ago
I don't recall suggesting that everyone in my field is perfect. Please show me where I suggested that.
I don't know anyone who participates in skydiving who believes every skydiver is perfect.
jjdiver 2 years ago
Fortunately for the sport, most people accept the consequences of there action.
Those who dont, discover (as I understand the situation) that the assumption of risk they signed will affect their chances of winning anything in a court, short of someone committing gross negligence. You may argue the instructor committed gross negligence, however I think he didnt.
jjdiver 2 years ago
Based on what Scott (or I suspect you) discovered in the lawsuits that were filed as a result of this jump, the courts agreed, did not find gross negligence, and the defendants prevailed.
