This movie was set in a time of communism, not in a free democracy such as Canada for you yourself and SirCharles have never had to endure, so how can it be bad for a man to leave a country for a better life elsewhere? Go ask a Romanian man in his late 30's onwards what it was like to grow up there under communism! instead of the self posturing lifestyle you have enjoyed but never endured.

What's Country mean to you if your country is a concentration camp or a gigantic prison?

If you have no idea what kind of miserable existence and police state in China before the 1990 you are just ignorant. But if you know what it was, then you are a moron for saying what you had said. Many people were risking their lives escaping from China back then. China was a gigantic prison. I know because I had experienced it. Some of my relatives died in sea during the escape.
