You have a beautiful voice!!! Your vibratto and tessitura are wonderful. You have a lot of color in your voice. Do you consider yourself a lyric soprano? What college are you attending?
There are several interpretations of Heidenröslein, all of which are equally valid. Some say, as several in the comments here do, that it has nothing to do with love either physical or psychological and instead deals with the chaste ideas of beauty and ephemerality. Others say it is about the beauty and ephemerality of love. Some take a darker stance and interpret it as being about a beautiful country girl who is left broken (emotionally heartbroken or physically raped) by the boy.
Hey now, I'm majoring in literature and literature analysis involves a lot more than taking a piece as it is. It involves a ton of delving into symbolism and metaphors and carefully looking at the placement of words and the words used. Of course, a lot of literature analyses are pretty far-fetched, but those I have read on this poem are all believeable. Hesse was a very spiritual and symbolic poet, and it's ignorant to view his works without keeping that in mind.
Ahh, yikes, I meant Goethe! ^^; What an embarrassing mistake. I'm reading something right now that alludes to both this poem and several works of Hesse, which I guess explains my mixup. I'm still going to stand by my assertion that I know what I'm talking about.
High notes were very nicely done, however the low rosleins were not very supported though. But all in all, it was quite good i must say. Congratulations!xD
Don't listen to these asshats on their high-horses saying you're no good, you've got a great voice and your pronunciation really isn't that bad, the lyrics are very clear. Schönes Lied.
ya my choir did this and we were better and it is all girls and 98 of us and it is about a rose but the flower dies and she seems too happy about that but the boy gets stuch HAHa go RIs
Stimmt!
I do not know if anyone ever thinks about the lyrics. Why does all the people think that the words are so great? I mean, please, it's about a boy who rapes a girl. Great! ^^
I thought it was about picking a flower. Of course there is a bit of anthropomorphism going on that make it possible to construe it as a tale of rape.
I doubt that you have understood the text. I am from Germany and I am in the German A-level cours. We analysed the song. And you have to see the figurative sense. It's about a boy picking a flower. Right. But: The boy wants to possess the flower because it's so beautiful. He does not listen to the flower who doesn't want to be picked. He takes it for his own satisfaction. That's it. And that's why you can interpret it like I did. And not just me. Other people thought it too. So, who's the idiot?
THat was really good! Which college did you want to get into? And did you get in? I'm applying for Roosevelt University next year and I might do this for the audition as well.
Im singing this song for a school competition and i must admit hearing u sing this is quite intimidating.

some say the boy is an iceberg and the rose the titanic....
There is no rape in this song and no iceberg.
Listen to it.

I had never thought of the sexual allusion, but now it is mentioned, William Blake's poem
"O rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night
In the howling storm
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy,
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy."
... comes to mind. Perhaps Goethe had this in mind? The allusion is very light, though, and I have my doubts.

Und der wilde Knabe brach
's Röslein auf der Heiden;
Röslein wehrte sich und stach,
half ihm doch kein Weh und Ach,
musst' es eben leiden.
Röslein, Röslein, Röslein rot,
Röslein auf der Heiden.

I think it's about a girl Goethe loved a lot, but not for long... Frederike Brion maybe as it is mentioned
duceooo 2 years ago
It is about beauty and ehpemerality.
The rose dies for it is beautiful.
As a German proverb says:
"Schoenheit ist Vergaenglich"
It is not about love.
schusterlehrling 2 years ago
Well, actually another poem dedicated to Frederike was published just below this poem when first published.
But that is a different poem.

some people say the song is about rape, read the translation....it's not a happy song the "rose" suffers because the boy wants it, and she doesn't
rabidrambler 3 years ago
As I pointed out,
it is about beauty and ephemarality.
Goethe was an artist and poet.
The melodic and graceful lyrics speak for themselves.
But for me it is easier to hear that, as I am a native German speaker.
Look out for the Helen Schneider Version of 1978 or Ardis Olof Vikingsdottir.
