  • Thanks man. I actually fixed mine by putting the head phones in at an angle towards the right side and I guess the pressure on it tweaked it a little bit. But your video helped me realize what the issue was. I hate when little lights pop on and I don't know what they mean.

  • You are the best!

    Worked first try- thank you

This made my day and inspires me that through such media info sharing it can be a better world- one little fix at a time multiplied by million over and over and the world just gets better.

  • My good sir, you are both a gentleman and a scholar.

    A thousand times thank you!

  • Why do my speakers stop working everytime i shut the cover?!!!

  • it worked! thank you!

  • Oh, hell yes - you just saved me $385! Thanks, IllHabit!!

Also, dawkinspwns 4 comments below were extremely helpful.

  • YES! This just worked, but instead of a safety pin, I used a paper clip. Thanks

  • Listening to this vid with my fucking laptop speakers thanks to you dude!! Cheers!!! First sound out of these speakers in over a year!

  • Thank you thank you thank you! You made my week! SOUND IS BACK :D

  • why are you TALLKING in a video about NO SOUND...?

  • fucking boss

  • I LOVE YOUUUUUUU :D

  • 4) You know you're hooking the contact right if the red light starts flickering when you're jiggling it or twisting the safety pin. If it doesn't work the first time, at least you know you had the right thing hooked and you just need to keep at it to get the contact unstuck.

In all it only took me about 90 seconds to get it unstuck. Thanks again, IllHabit! Brilliant solution!

  • 3) I wasn't quite able to get the tip of the safety pin behind the contact to dislodge it, but what I was able to do was get it hooked on "top" of it by scraping down the side and it would eventually catch on the contact. At that point I just twisted the pin in the same direction as I was scraping to get the tip of the safety pin under the contact. So if my contact was at the 3:00 position, I scraped from 1:00 to 4:00 until it caught the contact at 3:00, then twisted clockwise to pop it out.

  • 2) Like some other folks have noted, it's the "back" contact that you need to get unstuck. There are two that are closer to the opening that are across from one another. Those aren't the ones you want. There will be another one that looks similar a little deeper in the socket, and it will only be on one side rather than on both sides. That's the one you want.

  • Another success story. A few points to help others.

    1) When you bend the tip of the safety pin, I found it best to only bend the very tip to a 90 degree angle. When I first bent it I bent too much and didn't have enough "room" to work inside the socket. The length of the bent part of your pin should be about the same as the thickness of a US nickel.

  • Thanks man I did exactly as you said and it works except I didn't find a safety pin. I used something little bit bigger then a paper clip and only took about 5 seconds. Thanks a lot man!

  • THANK YOU

  • excellent! worked perfectly, took about 4 seconds after my safety pin was finally bent the right way!

  • You rock man!! Second jack on the right side was stuck. Saved me a trip to the apple store and a talk with the lame, know it all geniuses. Than you.

  • I cant hear you! WHAT THE FUUCK!

  • Thank you.

Seriously I was about to throw this shit against the wall. Spent 3 hours sifting through pages and videos of morons simply telling me to stick shit in there and by magic it works! if not go to Apple.

First person I come across who seemed to actually understand the mechanism and as a result your advice helped.

I feel like i just got a negative AIDs test.

    Cheers mate.

  • NV MIND IT STOPED :(

  • OMG THE WEIRDEST THING JUST HAPPENED I WAS WITHOUGHT SOUND AND EVRYTHING AND I WAS WATCHING UR VID AND I UNPLUGED MY HEADPHONES TO FIX IT THEN IT WORKED :DD SOOO HAPPY

  • Helped me! Thanks man...only had a black hair pin...kinda tugged around the 3 o'clock gold colored pin and I was back in business ;) peace brada!

  • Thanks man, you're the shit. I've been with this problem for about 5 days ans nobody could help. Awesome

  • You are a computer genius. Thanks!

  • Thank you! after watching this, my problem was solved in 3 seconds! Use head phones everyone to hear what he said - it works!

  • how far in is it? because i can see 2 copper prong things sticking out but they're fairly close to the entrance of the audio jack. I've been hooking something underneath of them and pulling them out but it doesn't work.

  • thanks so much, i done it to my sis mac but i fixed it before she kicked my ass thanks! lol

  • After 3 years of no sound and trying to fix it without any results I found your video, tried it out and now I have sound. Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

  • Ohh God, now how am i going to hear you if my speakers are not working?

  • I love you, man

  • OMG, after a 1 1/2 year of searching for an answer and upgrading my machine etc etc... I thought I would search for a solution again. Man, I made the tiny hook like you said and started poking around in there, and sure enough, the light went off and I have sound again!!

Thanks so much for your help. I can't say if poking the front did it or pulling at a lever way in the back on the left hand side did. I saw a copper colored lever there and pulled at it gently. i did this while os asleep

  • Put in headphones and your audio works......

  • ok, ive read forum posts and no one seems to know what im talking about, i was sitting around listening to music with the internal speakers i guess, all of a sudden the volume cut to like half, i didnt touch anything, now the volume is really really low! and i cant switch it around, no hittin the volume up button didnt help, it didnt move when the volume dropped, HELP ME!!!!!!!

  • why are you morons with no sound surfing youtube videos? try to read forum posts!

  • I'm watching this video because my sound doesn't work.. how am i supposed to hear what you're saying ?! :/

  • It works!!! so grateful 2 u :-)

  • man your fuking owsome!!!!

  • It worked! Gratzi, gentle scholar.

  • Is this a joke?!!! How am I supposed to hear what you're saying?. Remember, the audio is not working!!! Worthless...

  • Holy shit I fixed it... I forced my jack in pushing upwards and boom! fixed...

  • thankssss!!

  • The Safty pin works. you must get a pliers and bend the tip to a small right angle.

9o'clock down to 6 worked for me.

  • This does work. It took me 3 different safety pins and what I found with mine is that there is actually 4 contacts. 1 each at left(9oclock), top(12oclock), and actually 2 on the right(3oclock). Mine was the deepest one on the right. I found it helped to have the computer on and audio playing as the red light helps to see. Also you will be able to tell what contact is stuck as when you just touch it the light may blink, go off. It took me a good half hour and be patient. Thanks Much!!!!

  • Done. Finally, would have liked to see inside of the hole so I wasn't just blasting through all blindly. But I finally got to hear my computer after I was finished.

All of that ^^^^^ That's what she said.

  • This is a great way to fix it, however, I am a bit afraid to do it.

  • no sound here haha

  • 12 O'Clock!

  • just took my head phones out and it fixed its self

    dont no what happened

  • thank you for posting this! it worked for me!

  • What if u have an iMac and Ur problem is Reversed

  • Excellent explanation. It worked for me first time itself. Thanks a lot for the fix!

  • mine was at 12'o clock. thanks for the fix!!!

  • I couldn't figure this out for like five months. You saved me so much money thank you!

  • I'm a fan of yours.. you know.. I love your wizife too <3 :)

  • THANKS MAN!! saved my bacon

  • wow!!! really worked!!! thanks man!!!

  • UR A GENIUS!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! U ROCK!!!

  • YES thank you

  • thank you so much this worked!!!!!!

  • Thanks allot, it worked!!!

The comment below helped me better understand what I had to do. "90 degree bent safety pin to turn it from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock seemingly."

  • Thank you for posting the video!

It works, although i used a wooden toothpick and just kinda turned it about in there, but pressing the pick against the sides.

    Thanks again!

  • You are awesome. I used a plastic toothpick. A little safer maybe. haha Thanks dude.

  • I LOOOOVEEEEE YOOOU MAAAN , Works 100% With Me :) , Apple Must Give You Free MACBOOK PRO 17INCH 2011 !!!!

  • i love you

  • you wont believe this... after watching this video with headphones in and pulling them out later I now have the sound back

  • I'm so glad I found your video. Had to fiddle around with it for a couple tries but your method worked perfectly! Thanks for posting the video

  • Tried everything and I was about to give up after 7 months of no sound... this worked! its a switch to the very back on the right (2nd set of connectors) i used the 90 degree bent safety pin to turn it from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock seemingly. THANK YOU IllHABIT!!!

  • thanks bro you fixed my sound!

  • thank man for this vid!! i tought that i was going to need to send my mac to repair it at the apple store

  • thank you :) i found that if i put by headphones in, and tuned them 90 degrees clockwise, so like 3 - 6 o'clock, it worked :) x x

  • Worked great been stuck on headphones for 3 weeks, used one of moms sewing needles grabbed some pliers to bend and popped the fuccer out, 1st time putting the headphones in recreated problem but screwing around wit it the second time permanent fix.... btw to hell wit the toothpick, matchstick and all the other shit

  • thank you it was a big help

  • Mate... You're a genius. Plain and simple!

Followed toothpick/matchstick methods... NO GOOD!.. just lost a good box of matches haha.

Took a pair of pliers and bent the end of a safety pin and followed you're advice.. Worked a Treat! Thanks again.

  • thanks it worked lol you saved me loads of money :) apple said it would cost 300 pounds

  • thanks dude. you saved my laptop speakers.

  • dude, you fixed my audio. big big big props to you, you saved me the hassle of a genius bar trip.

  • To all that cannot hear this video, please try using headphones ;-)

  • @IllHabit hey man ive had the same problem and tried with the switch on the left side (9oclock) to no avail, so i started playing with the one on the right side, still nothing. I then noticed a little piece of metal shaped like a switch at 12 oclock and started pushing that back in, again, nothing. so finally, i came back to the left and right switches and pushed those 2 in. fortunately, my internal speakers started working again but now headphones dont work anymore... any suggestions? thanks

  • @IllHabit

How is a mentally challenge person using a computer.

  • i cant even hear this

  • You had me squinting into the jack wiggling this safety pin around thinking I must be stupid for listening to some wiseguy on Youtube, when...BING! The red light went off and my speakers returned to life! THANK YOU so much.

I am appalled that Apple had the cheek to suggest I buy a new logic board to fix this problem. I am very sure they are clearly aware that this is easily rectifiable, yet say nothing.

  • Bro! you gotta post you paypal account, surely some of us will donatte some bucks to you, thumbs up if you agree with me

  • you just saved me $200. Thank you!

  • You are my herrooooo!!

  • You are my hero!!!

  • You are my hero!!!

  • Uhh thanks!

  • the light turns off, but my speakers still dont work???

  • Worked like a charm. Thanks

  • For some reason, If I go to applications, utilites folder, midi setup, and then test the output sound of my speakers, it works!

  • Top man. Had this problem on my MacBook for ages and got very grumpy about it. Here in London apple store wanted to charge me over £400. unbelievable. tried toothpick, etc. but your method worked first time within 10 seconds. Took me longer to bend the safety pin with small pliers, but once you hook the part, and wiggle it a bit, the red light comes off. Clear instructions and good, sound (!) advice. Thank you!

  • I tried everything until I came across you method. It totally worked!!!!! The toothpick thing did not. I fixed it in a matter of seconds with the safety pin and hook on the end. Thank you so much.

  • I just realized that if people were trying to listen to your advice on their no-audio broken computers, they wouldn't be able to listen to the advice which lets them listen to music. How ironic

  • I have a macbook pro and i also had the problem in audio in jack where you put the headphones in. I tried to move around the jack from different angles and for moments it worked and then stopped. So I was out of ideas and decided to put in the headphone in the audio out jack, which should be just to the left of headphone jack on a macbook pro and after plugging it in there, within 3 seconds the red light stopped and my music was blasting just fine. Both sides were, sound was coming crisp

  • OMG lmao this happened to me when i brought out my laptop from my car, so i watched this video and did it on like the 2nd try with a paper clip.. worked fine.. thanks for the help!

  • @IllHabit Holy crap dude watch your video with the transcribe audio feature enabled and prepare to laugh your ass off. Hahhahahahahahah

  • Thanks for the video dude.......great help

  • I see no red light, should I still try this saftey pin method?

  • thanks for the subtitles, ass. my sound doesnt work........

  • @kalelvondoom Use some headphones!!!!!!!!!!

  • Perfect! Worked for me! Thanks for the vid. Mine was at 9 O'clock and i had to turn it downwards ie anti-clockwise from 9 to 6. i used a keychain instead of a safety pin.

  • It's best to use non metallic things such as toothpicks to do this.

  • Thanks man! After reading so many posts, this is the only solution that worked. First try too.

  • BUT now my speakers don't work when I plug them in, soooo that kinda sucks... a lot.

  • Thanks dude! Probably saved me a fortune in 'Genius' repairs.

  • Class video... worked perfect :D

  • @IllHabit

i used a safety pin and same thing i try the two connectors and 3 and 9 o clock but there is this other hole like around 12 o clock that i stick the oin in there and the light tyrns off but the pin has to stay in there the light tunrs off but still no sound coming out of the speakers

  • Thanks everyone-- Glad I could help you out ( :-}#

  • Hey i get the red light to turn off but then it says headphones are connected

but its just the bobby pin i tried ALLLL the stupid things and none of them worked for me when i tried your thing and i seen external speakers pop up on my sound menu but now i cant get thsat to pop up again i can make the red light flicker did that happen to you? plz any help thanks desperate for sound!=[

  • Since my speakers aren't working, I can't hear the fix.

  • THANK YOU!!!

It broke back in February and I just gave up after countless tries. This actually worked and now I can listen to things through my speakers again!!! The mac 'geniuses' said that it would have cost $500-600 to fix it. I honestly can't thank you enough!

  • It worksssss. Thanks alot man!

  • Nice. Thanks for sharing. It's appreciated.

  • 5-8-2010

there is 3 contacts if you cant see it that means is stuck in there use the safety pin hook to move it around until you see sound icon. It works! I just tried it on my friend's laptop and it worked! my problem was on the bottom contact it took all of 5 minutes to figure it out Thanks man!
