First instructor I've seen who says to put the thumb over the neck instead of behind. Keep in mind this may limit your reach. Also, how about some right hand technique?
@MNDZA222 Thanks for the comment. I know what you mean about the thumb. This video is aimed at holding open chords and comfortable lead playing for simple melodies.
When playing certain lead parts that are more stretchy and other things like barre chords, the thumb will be about half way down the back of the neck. I believe I do mention this in the video.
Right hand technique - I have a separate video for holding the pick. Any further information is part of the 28day rock star course.
One important point is not to stick your elbow out! A guitar Space Trainer helps to get that bent finger position, using fingertips, like you describe for chords.
Thats how my guitar teacher like it. I play a little different though. I can see why most like it like that. It makes my bar chords way easier. This method makes it easy for notes and average chords
question though so if you hold the guitar that way when you playin chords, then how do you hold the guitar when you playing power chords or bar chords
great great video... i find this the ... the absolute most important aspect of playing guitar.... and positioning is crucial especially for blues and soloing and stuff..... some people attempt to engage in such styles but with wrong hand positioning and end up being frustrated easier than if they would have kept their thumbs up and no fingers behind the neck so as to support it.... The problem though for me with holding the guitar like that... like jimi hendrix... is that my finger. indexfinger.

Nice clear instruction. And I like those birds chirping in the background!

the thumb must be back in the neck, not over it, that way you have more freedom to play with your fingers, you can stretch it longer, thumbs down.

Interesting, 'cause most all of the instructors I've seen recommend having the thumb back and leaving space between the palm and the neck....

The thing I love about Richards teaching style is that he really wants you to do what feels comfortable to you.
Just hold the guitar as he says for chords and relax you're wrist.
you want you're thumb and index finger to almost replicate a Capo for bar chords.
once again, Great great lesson and reminder Richard.
