I love this song! I have listened to it so many times! I had a great uncle by marriage who was cherokee, I just had the honor of my great aunt asking me to work on his family tree and find out more about his ancestors for her kids. I also discovered in the geneaology search that in my family, the man who started my family in the 1700s was adopted and that he was originally from an abenaki tribe in Canada!
Freely translated: "A we n'" I AM), "de" (OF), "Yauh" --the-- (GREAT SPIRIT), "Ho" meaning (IT IS SO).
Written as: A we n' de Yauh ho (I am of the Great Spirit, it is so!).
This language stems from very ancient Cherokee

So beaitiful. My great grandmother was from Virginia but my grt gran fell in love and brought her to Amite, Miss. My family still lives in MS I'm still trying to find her name my grt gran's was Carraway.
I am a strong believer of the quality of the blood over quantity. I know so little about my family so I have no idea of the quantity (Nor do I really care. For me, I merely want to know more about my family. No luck really.), but I know somewhere in my father's side of the family was a Cherokee, and also on my mother's side not sure of the tribe though. I think Ute, but I could be wrong. Either way, that's not important. I am proud of this part of my heritage as well as my others. Very.
Katy this was a wonderful Tribute to your Grandmother! And to others out there also! I myself AM Cherokee with Blackfoot and some Apache mixed with Irish! I loved this music..it makes you feel right at home!!! Thanks for posting this!!
Then why would Rita and family proclaim Tsalagi roots, if they weren't? I don't know my bloodline, but am a proud adoptee of the Shawnee and the Seneca People. And am currently learning to speak an Algonkin language. The racist part of these comments is, you telling someone else that Rita, for instance, is not Tsalagi. Where is your proof? Just like U.S. gov't, dictating who is Native and who isn't.
@katydidscorner same way with my grandfather I am a quarter and don't even speak or understand the language and know very little of my family history very very sad
This whole discussion about who is indigenous American or not strikes me as incredibly racist. What is important is the spirit of the song and the transformative power of the chant. The Spirit knows no bounds and resides equally in all beings regardless of shape or form or color - that is the message of the Grandfathers.
Very Very good! My grandmother used to sing this to me when I was a baby. I remember her comforting me with the song when my baby brother died in 1997. I was only 3. The song is...VERY powerful, even if you are not a Cherokee like me, you can still hear real power behind the music.

Thanks for the post and how beautiful this is as a tribute to your grandmother. Sky full of stars! take care, Sharon
I have just today discovered katydidscorner. I love all her interests. I have listened to maybe twelve sons so far , and this is my very favorite ! I love the music the art and the whole channel !
I am a native Canadian, white, not Native Indian, live in a village surround by different Native tribes and have many friends who are Native Indians. I love this music, so peaceful and Rita is awesome too. Superb video to watch while listening. Music is universal. :)) This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing. 1000+stars!
Beautiful as always your videos. I have an adopted aunt and I love her like real family and her mother also. I have been blessed that such good people came into my life. Grace EagleHawk
Katy Dear, Uhhh, where are the family photos? We Cherokee know our ancestry and names of our cousins. Even other Natives know she is not American Indian. She has kept this false face going long enough, and , as laws grow to protect us, she is getting more careful what to say - eliminating the statement that she is Cherokee on her new website. You can find very good Authentic Native American Indian Music! Also, Walela does not mean anything in our language, It is WaleLi
@ethnosify you should be ashamed of your tone and your remarks. You are no expert on anyone else's heritage so just stick to what you know. The fact you didn't know Rita Coolidge was Cherokee speaks volumes about your ignorance.
"There is no such thing as 'part-Cherokee.' Either you're Cherokee or you're not.
It isn't the quantity of Cherokee blood in your veins that is important, but the quality of it . . . your pride in it. I have seen full-bloods who have virtually no idea of the great legacy entrusted to their care. Yet, I have seen people with as little as 1/500th blood quantum who inspire the spirits of their ancestors because they make being Cherokee a proud part of a their everyday life."
~Jim Pell: Principal Chief of the North Alabama Cherokee Tribe ~ Do you know where do you fit into this quote, ethnosify? May the Warm Winds of Heaven Blow softly upon your house. May the Great Spirit Bless all who enter there. May your Mocassins Make happy tracks in many snows, and may the Rainbow Always touch your shoulder.
@TheIndoctriNATION i greatly agree with that, my great-great-grandmother was a full blooded cherokee, but i show the most cherokee behaviour in my family since her, so i call myself complete cherokee, and i take much-much-MUCH pride in it.
@ethnosify How do you know who is Cherokee or not. Unless you have genetic proof, then there is 0 reason to say otherwise.Get off her back My ancestors records were burned in the Trail of Tears. How dare you make that call on somebody elses ancestry. All but one record in the Henderson Records was burned. If you really know your culture so well you'd know tat there has 1 been interracial marraige since the 1600s and 2 that 1000s of records were burned by the US gvt. You need to learn a lot more
@ethnosify There is a Cherokee book and in it..it says if you are 1/6 or more You ARE Cherokee No matter what! I dont know this Rita but If her family Father was full blooded and there is Cherokee on on mothers side she is Cherokee!! Its in the books..so no matter what you say she is a Cherokee Indian!!! Check any Cherokee Books and your find it in there! Or ask a wise Cherokee yourself!
The song is beautiful, but few realize that the language is actually Teehahnamah. They're a smaller tribe centered East TN, maybe 10 fluent speakers left. I only know of one book, "The Eighth Arrow" by Dr. Donald Yates, that gives the translation.
This was sung only at sunrise, only by women. Despite what you'll find cloned on the web, it does NOT mean "I am of the Great Spirit, Aho", but rather, "Our hearts are strong."
There are genuine Cherokee morning songs, this isn't one of them.
Beautiful family have you Katy!! And such touching video in the memory of your dad!!Somewhere...in the Univers..he is very proud of you!!Your legacy is soo powerful and soo beautiful !! Thanks to share with us!!
Oh thank you for this lovely presentation. I was eatin g when it first came on and I had to put my food asidebecause it was so touching I got alump in my throat. May you and yours always Walk in Beauty.
Thank you for your lovely comments. My father passed away , as did three of his siblings, before my grandmother passed. I miss my father more today than ever before and wished he and his sisters could have lived longer lives. But mostly, I can never forget the sadness and grief this brought my grandmother. She endured a lot of hardship and faced discrimination all her life. For those reasons, all my American Indian videos are tributes to her.
Katy sister, we are all vibration and light. At these world we are material also. Très beau chant Cherokee, peuple des grandes plaines; peuple de courage et valeurs. Merci, Katy, garde en mémoire ton peuple et tes racines ancestrales, soit orguelleuse et fière.
Thanks, Katy! Still one of my favorite songs from childhood. Are you from Oklahoma? Your grandmother looks like one of my grandmother's friends from Hobart. Thanks for helping our heritage thrive.
As far as our family knows, our Cherokee 5th generation grandfather and grandmother survived the removal of the five tribes of Southeastern natives from their ancestral homelands to Oklahoma. He and his wife left the reservation in Oklahoma because they longed for the beauty and peace of the Appalachia. They became sharecroppers working for a plantation owner in Northwest Tennessee settling near Reelfoot Lake, and there they stayed. My Grandmother married and Englishman and lived there also.
