I'm surprised to see the complaints that he sounds "too real" and "histrionic." (Interestingly, the two complaints seem to mean the same thing.) He's Nick Cave. He sings it like Nick Cave. It's not going to sound like the Louvin Brothers. Personally, I love the way he sings this one. I think it's strange to expect the singer of a murder ballad to sound alienated from the murder.
First time i heard this song I was look at some courage wolf memes and the one that came up once this song started was "IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING, KILL IT!" it's like it knew....
So histrionic, doesn't work at all for me. The whole horror of this song seems to me to reside in the distance between the killer and what he has done, this alienation from the magnitude of one's own deeds being the very failing which allows the murder to occur. This is about as subtle as the acting in a porno movie. Sorry but I don't believe a word of his performance. Blue Sky Boys every time....
besides having nick cave as a personal hero of mine, its just spellbinding to hear him sing about the town where im born and raised and currently living and working... its strange to even hear him utter the name... as an added bonus, the song is pretty damn good too... at least to this appallachian hill billy
Ok.... umm.... He sounds too real... This song is disturbing enough without the singer sounding like he really did just do it and sounding like he enjoyed it.... O____o;;;; I'm gonna have to go listen to the Jim & Jesse one again to cleanse my palate...

I wrote this song.
I love Nick, but he didn't do my song justice.

I suppose I love just about everything Nick has ever done, some more than others, but this is one fine cover.
