  • My God and Buddha, they are just beautiful, all three... A big "Aloha" and "Mahalo" for posting this... I grew up just south of San Jose,,, "Coyote Station".... The Daylight came by our school every morning at about 10:00 AM south bound... At that time in my life, all I wanted to see were the "New Diesels"... Didn't know what I had, until I lost it....

  • For a similarly beautiful loco, check out the NSW (Australia) C38 class Pacifics. These were delivered from (?)1943 on ..the first five of the class were streamlined with side valances and bullet shaped boiler projection similar to 4449. In all over green livery and gold pinstriping they sported the State's flower emblem (the Waratah) on the smokebox door..

  • I love hte 844 and 3985 but obviously the 4449 beat them :)

  • I can't pick. They're all amazing in their own way.

  • I like 844 for its speed. I like 4449 for its color. I like 3985 because its articulated.

  • 3985!!!!

  • where's the whistle on 3985?

  • @SuperMario6419 Im not sure, but I think its mounted inside the space between the smokestack pipes.

  • the 4449

  • 4449, the most beautiful steam train in the world, period.

  • i vote 4449

  • all are my favorite every steam engine is special especaily there wistle!

  • 844

  • what about SP&S 700, NKP 765, PM 1225, etc....lol

  • favorite, 844

  • You can probably guess from my screen name which locomotive I'm voting for ;)

  • The last one is a Mohawk, isn´t it?

  • Imean sp4449

  • My vote is up4449

  • Those steering such machines must feel ... big...

  • my vote is UP3985

  • I can't vote, they're all incredible. Got to ride behind the 844 in Wyoming, it was an amazing trip. I've seen the Challenger many times, and saw the 4449 in the Freedom Train scheme. It's a total shame the 611 and 1218 can't be a part of this. I got to ride behind the 611 in Missouri and saw the 1218 once. To me, the 1218's whistle isn't that great, sounded more like a high pitched European whistle. 611's was more comparable to the these three. So yeah, awesome work UP, and NS... bite me.

  • REAL horsepower-to-the-rails... Great video. My dad, when he was a kid, used to "run to the whistle" to watch the steam giants go. I can see why he was excited about 'em. BTW: ALL of them are great, but our fave: 3985.

  • I vote 3985. If 844 had that it would be a tough decision! BTW great job pacing with the trains. it looked like the trains were standing still!

  • GREAT VIDEO, JUST AWESOME!!!! THIS IS ONLY FOR SHOW OR STILL WORKING FOR BUSSINES? WHERE CAN I GO TO WATCH THIS FANTASTIC MACHINES, I mean States??? Wyoming?

  • This is high speed passenger rail we can believe in!

  • someone really needs to get another articulated steam locomotive running. UP 3985 is the only operating mainline articulated steam locomotive in the US. If not a Big Boy, let's remember that there is another Challenger, 3977. 1218 is pretty much deader than doornail (great job, NS. Cancel the steam program RIGHT in the middle of a 15 year overhaul?! GREAT idea!) UNLESS her internal organs are still hanging around somewhere, then she has some hope.

  • Personally, I love the Challenger's whistle. That's how a locomotive that powerful should sound.

  • God, that's gorgeous.

  • SP 4449 has the manliest whistle...

  • 4449! 'Nuf said

  • Great Job blending the three most fantastic Locos! In a single, short piece you have saved historic demonstrations of the best in stream railroading. Again; great job!

  • 844 was flying!

  • big boy ! my favourite steam angine :D

  • sp 4449 wins

  • The UP's were the best because there was no damn P42 there to ruin it!

I know my name is "Amtrak" but if you're going to run a steam engine, run a steam engine without a diesel trailing behind her.

  • Brilliant what more can I say its just Grate

  • All 3.

  • Man, the last one was f* awesome! What was the speed?

  • Love the first one.

  • SP 4449

  • My decision is.........

    ALL 3 OF THEM!!!!! :)

  • 844

  • I prefer northern type locomotives.

  • Skip this is one your very best and my 2,5 year old son spend a lot of time watching your fantastic videos. When he can't sleep he'll watch late at night as 'your trains' carry him off to the land of dreams. It always works.

  • What software do you use for your videos?

  • it's a tie between 4449 and 3985

  • Big Wheels Turning - Ja1250 paced from Mercer to Ohinewai

  • I have to say 4449

  • SP4449 for sure! that horn is so sweet, and it looks badass

  • All you need now is 3751 and 2472

  • UP3985!!!!

  • for some reason 4449 seems like or sounds it has more power???? both are awesome

  • @DanielVolker

    What?

I have seen the SP 4449 run without diesels. I have seen it run with the UP 844. I have seen it run with Union Pacific diesel locomotives.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow!

  • Both Ups r sweet

  • The P42 behind 4449 is for HEP or Head End Power for electrical since the 4449 is not owned by a Major Corp like UP3985 is, they have to depend on other railroads to host their trips such as amtrak, 3985 is owned by UP and has their own Power cars and UP host's their trips. So it's not that the owners don't trust 4449, it's because they have to be hosted

  • That makes sense

  • Very nice! And 844 was FLYING, I'd love to drive alongside her in my STI : ) Still beating myself up though about missing 4449 passing through IL and WI... I need to find out where they post the excursion dates.

  • they are ALL Great ! 5****

  • viva 844 !!

  • First one for me ..Awsome..

  • Horray for Union Pacific for giving us 844. This "old gal" is the ideal. She sprints, she climbs, she's direct and to the point!

  • I want to say 4449, but the Genesis ruins the effect. It seems like her owners can't trust her. 844 is my vote.

  • Comment removed

  • I'd have to say Triple 49 as number one and 844 and number two.

  • I'd say 3985. I would say 4449, but she's become a bit overrated now (due to all of the foamers and her popularity).

  • Great video!!

  • man, you're so lucky.

  • My fav is UP 3985, because of its sheer size and power

  • Great shots, SP4449 of course

  • daylight all the way. but Baldwin locos are the best.

  • Lima and Baldwin are the best. 4449 is the best Lima, but 1225 is the best Baldwin. 844 and the Big Boys are the best ALCos.

  • 1225 is a full blown lima. but I still like it

  • wait, now a shay has class all its own!

  • yeah. shays are cool too. I'm just saying that 844 actually has Baldwin running gear even though its an ALCO locomotive

  • Comment removed

  • Rods..... Those awesome metal things we see flashing around

  • Comment removed

  • 844's running gear, rods, cranks, whatever you want to call them are made by Baldwin. They are lighter weight and work better. running gear=rods.

  • Comment removed

  • its not just the valve gear. its all of her rods. and cause it says baldwin if you look close. and steve lee admits too. Baldwin used all types of valve gears lima used all types of valve gears ALCO used all types of valve gears. that has nothing to do with it. 844s rods all of them were made by baldwin.

  • and 844 is an ALCO but actually has Baldwin running gear cause it works so much better than what ALCO gave her

  • Comment removed

  • i know?

  • 844 definitely

  • I liked the first, last and middle ones best!

  • Same here, except I liked them even more than you! :D.

  • Hard choice for 3 great locomotives representing a time in the US of great innovation and promise. My votes for 3985 because of some of the geat videos by SkipW has posted showing flat out on the great plains of the mid-west.

  • 4449, 3985, 844>>>>

    or is it 844, 3985, 4449?

Dang, who cares, they are all great.

  • 844 has the attitude and looks of a real locomotive, 4449 is just a passenger looker

  • 3985. What can I say, I'm a stickler for articulation.

  • I tend to lean that way myself, but I think we need a triple header to really decide : )

  • Love em all but the 4449 will always get my vote!

  • Nice video, that was sweet to see all three rolling with full on!

  • 3985! All Day!

  • 844, Fucker moves!!!!

  • For me personally I like the whistle of 844

  • I vote for 4449, but like them both. Leebm29

  • 4449!

  • 3985 is my top vote. 4449 is a great looker. *****

  • sp499 a

nd i'm from the uk like the sound

  • 844 is the king, now and forever, hands down.

  • Which one to choose when all they are lovely.

My heart rejoyces for 4449, but, allways this but, my hearts beats faster, my bood boils for 3985.

  • 844 without a doubt :)

  • 4449 all the way!

    Alex

  • 4449

  • I vote for the 3985

  • nice video *****

  • either the SP or UP 884, i like how the motercycle driver stars at 884

  • 844 :)

  • i like the 4449 and 3985 but i have to go with the 3985

  • that's a tough, one i really like 4449 & 3985. but having to choose only one... i vote: 4449

  • Comment removed

  • Kick ass!

  • i cant vote man, they are all so great.

  • Wow!! now this is a great comparison!! well done!

  • cool I thought you folks might like it, as it sure was nice to see all 3 in the last year

  • I notice that both 4-8-4s have very similar sounding whistles.
