My God and Buddha, they are just beautiful, all three... A big "Aloha" and "Mahalo" for posting this... I grew up just south of San Jose,,, "Coyote Station".... The Daylight came by our school every morning at about 10:00 AM south bound... At that time in my life, all I wanted to see were the "New Diesels"... Didn't know what I had, until I lost it....
For a similarly beautiful loco, check out the NSW (Australia) C38 class Pacifics. These were delivered from (?)1943 on ..the first five of the class were streamlined with side valances and bullet shaped boiler projection similar to 4449. In all over green livery and gold pinstriping they sported the State's flower emblem (the Waratah) on the smokebox door..
I can't vote, they're all incredible. Got to ride behind the 844 in Wyoming, it was an amazing trip. I've seen the Challenger many times, and saw the 4449 in the Freedom Train scheme. It's a total shame the 611 and 1218 can't be a part of this. I got to ride behind the 611 in Missouri and saw the 1218 once. To me, the 1218's whistle isn't that great, sounded more like a high pitched European whistle. 611's was more comparable to the these three. So yeah, awesome work UP, and NS... bite me.
REAL horsepower-to-the-rails... Great video. My dad, when he was a kid, used to "run to the whistle" to watch the steam giants go. I can see why he was excited about 'em. BTW: ALL of them are great, but our fave: 3985.
GREAT VIDEO, JUST AWESOME!!!! THIS IS ONLY FOR SHOW OR STILL WORKING FOR BUSSINES? WHERE CAN I GO TO WATCH THIS FANTASTIC MACHINES, I mean States??? Wyoming?
someone really needs to get another articulated steam locomotive running. UP 3985 is the only operating mainline articulated steam locomotive in the US. If not a Big Boy, let's remember that there is another Challenger, 3977. 1218 is pretty much deader than doornail (great job, NS. Cancel the steam program RIGHT in the middle of a 15 year overhaul?! GREAT idea!) UNLESS her internal organs are still hanging around somewhere, then she has some hope.
Great Job blending the three most fantastic Locos! In a single, short piece you have saved historic demonstrations of the best in stream railroading. Again; great job!
Skip this is one your very best and my 2,5 year old son spend a lot of time watching your fantastic videos. When he can't sleep he'll watch late at night as 'your trains' carry him off to the land of dreams. It always works.
If you look at that Amtrak Diesel behind '' daylight''. you see smoke coming out of the stack.. thats just sad. The owners of S.P need to fix that pic.
The P42 behind 4449 is for HEP or Head End Power for electrical since the 4449 is not owned by a Major Corp like UP3985 is, they have to depend on other railroads to host their trips such as amtrak, 3985 is owned by UP and has their own Power cars and UP host's their trips. So it's not that the owners don't trust 4449, it's because they have to be hosted
Very nice! And 844 was FLYING, I'd love to drive alongside her in my STI : ) Still beating myself up though about missing 4449 passing through IL and WI... I need to find out where they post the excursion dates.
its not just the valve gear. its all of her rods. and cause it says baldwin if you look close. and steve lee admits too. Baldwin used all types of valve gears lima used all types of valve gears ALCO used all types of valve gears. that has nothing to do with it. 844s rods all of them were made by baldwin.
Hard choice for 3 great locomotives representing a time in the US of great innovation and promise. My votes for 3985 because of some of the geat videos by SkipW has posted showing flat out on the great plains of the mid-west.

The UP's were the best because there was no damn P42 there to ruin it!
I know my name is "Amtrak" but if you're going to run a steam engine, run a steam engine without a diesel trailing behind her.
