I was there when it happened and it was pretty nasty. Thank you for making this hilarious piece which deflates the pompousness of some artists, no matter how great they are. They often forget to remain human...
Keith Jarrett is a fucking retard. I don't mean that in an insulting way, but if you look at the movements he makes while he plays and the sounds he makes, he is ACTUALLY retarded. I'm talking fundamentally and technically retarded. That's right, I said it. Keith Jarrett is a technical fucken retard.
And he's better than you. A fucking retard is better than you at the piano. That fucking retard has played with the greats and is a living legend of jazz. You will never accomplish as much in your life as this fucking retard. Now kill yourself.
I am a great fan of KJ's music, but I witnessed this concert in Umbria, and it wasn't the cameras that destroyed the performance, it was KJ's lousy behavior. Great satire!
Satire has always been the best way to expose extreme pomposity. And Jarrett is nothing if not extremely pompous.
As for the "genius needs sacred silence" excuse: the notion that great jazz improvisation can't be done under less than perfect circumstances is ludicrous and belied by many of the brilliant live jazz recordings we have in the canon today - hear all those glasses clinking at the Vanguard while Evans plays?. I don't care how brilliant you are: treat the audience with respect.
although i agree the audience should be treated with utmost respect, it's moronic to not put the artist first, a god of the piano at that. if the musician does not get what he wants, he or she will feel less comfortable and you will get a less than perfect product... which is what we all want.
Jarrett may have his personal flaws but that is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT when you hear the music he makes. The makers of this vid just show they have missed the point and lack any understanding of the process of a true artist.
Perhaps the next thing this lot creates could be something to move the spirit rather than titilate the less worthy aspects of one's nature...
Yeah - isn't it annoying when people don't bow to the unparalleled pomposity of assholes!???? "The makers of this vid just show they have missed the point and lack any understanding of the process of a true artist." - that excludes those who do not act like reality show douchebags (KJ) from the category of "true artist".
Nuthugger apologists of your ilk are enablers of this egregious assholery. Call a spade a spade - this guy is out of control and needs to be brought down a notch or ten.
Well I've never been called a 'nuthugger apologist' before so for that I thank you!
I'm of course not saying you have to act like 'reality show douchebags' to be a 'true artist' but, nevertheless, I can still sympathise with Jarrett's point of view...
I'm not saying Jarrett's behaviour was particulary acceptable, but it is very understandable. To sustain the high level of consciousness Jarrett always brings to his playing calls for a heightened sensitivity and a certain uncompromising inner attitude.
I still find this display by the 'Industrial Jazz Group' cheap and unfunny. Why don't they make some great MUSIC?
It's one thing to need silence & no distractions so he can try and get into his state of one-ness with his performance, thats fair enough. But it's silly to think that gives him the right to rudely INSULT the entire audience and their city, and that's EXACTLY what he did, no less. That is not excusable. EVEN IF, by your reasoning, being so talented INHRENTLY means he has to be irrationally rude (which is illogical and wrong), then people still have every right to be offended at his rudeness.
Yes he would. I think Keith Jarrett is an EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE pianist, I'm completely mesmorised, amazed and inspired by the music he creates. But that doesn't mean he isn't a disgustingly rude, obnoxious, arrogant, stupid pratt. And he is.
Absolutely brilliant. I'm floored by the creativity of this response to the inexcusable KJ tirade in the Umbria Jazz Fest. Kudos to you for putting such a lighthearted spin on it. If only KJ would show such magnanimity and stop acting like a fricken 4 year old all the time. Twice I've seen this so-called jazz legend (more like professional prick, if you ask me) in Toronto, and both times his behaviour messed up what was up to that point a great show.
Yea, Youtube! I saw the original clip posted by robertojarrett which helped me appreciate your take even more. Hilarious!
I itunesed "City of Angles" recently. Great record. You guys should come to Cleveland. I'll bet you could get at least 20 people to come out to the show.
I only got halfway. Isn't there better things these people can do with their talent?

the best performance that can come out of an artist

@earthchild100 Agreed. 100%. Keith could have been nicer about it, but who cares? The bottom line is that he was absolutely right.

EoN: I never said that Jarrett's behaviour was acceptable - just understandable....
Personally, I find the above vid far more cheap than any actions by Jarrett. To point at the faults of such a legend is very.... small.

@cosmicjazzer Is it small to think yourself above an entire group of people?
