i love your "waterfall" what a kool idea less effort then a waterfall but looks great and im sure much easier to maintain your fish are beautiful and i like how your pond is butted up to the house so you can go right out and feed the fish great job 2 thumbs up from me !
For people that had problems with predators, I read that you want to leave space under the banks of the pond for the fish to hide. without any structure the fish are completely vulnerable... however for the person with the otter problem I don't know what you would do about that..
We had lots of Koi in our pond.. untill we woke up one morning to find most of the fish bitten in half laying at the side of the pond. We had a problem with a heron at first. But then realised that a heron doesn't bite fish in half and usually swallows them hole. We then found that it was an Otter that got in to the pond and ate most fish and killed the others.
i had over $2000 in koi, then one night a blue heron came down and ate some of them...i then cleaned the pond but it was too late...the rest of them died later in the month, everything was going perfect too :(
@ryno212121 Good solution to herons is a heron decoy. Sounds funny like you would be attracting them but it works just the opposite. Herons wont land near other herons, it's like stealing each others hunting grounds. I've had mine for over a year now on a large pond and haven't seen one since. I just have his head sticking out of the reeds. You can find one online or one of the big box hunting stores. I found mine at a outlet store at a plastic factory that made decoys, $18 I think?
@MyTvThesesdays the waterfall is mainly for looks but also to oxygenate the water for the fish. if you have alot of oxygenating plants in your pond then you can turn it off for a little if you are really worried about electricity.
Beautiful koi. I like the urn for the water return. I only have goldfish in my pond, haven't been brave enough to try koi because I keep hearing that they are more delicate. My goldfish do eat out of my hand, too, though they are not as impressive in size or color variety I have to admit.
@ddeeclausius They handle snow and cold VERY well, they are carp after all lol. I live up in chicago and I over winter them outside. As long as you have a deep enough pond to where it wont freeze all the way threw and you can provide an aerator your good.
Nice, my koi don't get near me when I feed them. Hope one day they will. Was wondering if you have a UV filter working for your pond set up? You water is so clear and I'm thing about getting a UV filter for mine as the water green.
I just bought a house and a week from now i get possesion, it has a 800gallon fish pond containing japanese goldfish with a wack load of different pumps and filtration systems so would it be big enough for a few koi fish? thanks, dave
Thank you it has been years since you posted this and as you said "maybe in years to come someone will enjoy this" I did very much! Your koi are beautiful
dang your koi are huge!!! oh hey i just bought a koi fish from petsmart, it says its medium size and it cost me 7.99, how old do you think it is and can it become as big as yours?
Under good care and proper filtration, these fish can easily live 50 years or more..
There have been reports of koi living over 200 years of age in Japan under pristine conditions and 80-year old koi are not uncommon in Japan, with some managing to live over 100 years..
I had a pond 2 houses ago. My big white fish kept jumping out. I found him on the patio 3 times gasping. He lived, but that last time I think he was out too long & maybe had some brain damage ( he swam sorta sideways after that )
This is wonderful! This is the exact reason why I've started building my koi pond... All I want are big beautiful fish that feed from you hands.. Thanks!
I just made a pond in the past two days. Got my carpet/cement underlay installed, wetted it down and now drying and hardening. Will put down a 17 x 15 black liner tomorrow, fill it up and then cut off access, then put down bluechip and big rocks around it. New filter and new pump, it is an expensive venture. How big were your koi when you got them? Do they breed on their own? I heard the older eat the small tiny fish? Don't see plants in your pond...do plants make it murky?
I have mine that are about 30 inches, good 14 to 16 pounders, that are 10 years old, they're eating me out of a house. lol It depends how much volume of water you have I have a 5000 gl pond my new 2 year old fry are already about 8 inches.I've heard they live about 80 years. If that's true? I'll never find out.
Yes! Koi do live till 80 Years old, In Japan their was a koi believed to be over 200 years old! But in Japan people give extensive care to koi, here in America they will live to 80 Years or more but usually they will live till around 40 - 60 years old. so they will be eating you out of your house for quite some time!
beautiful pond, how long did they take to get that big? also how do you keep your pond so clean and clear? What do you do to keep unwanted animals out that might harm your fish?
What brand of food do you think is the best? You know betwen the ones you find in any petshop, I´m not able to order it from somewere else, Thanks a lot I´d apreciate your time.
ebay has high protein koi food 100lbs for $200 (45% protein) which is used for koi 1-3 years of age. Then you might as well go with koi food from the supermarket or buy on ebay which is cheaper (35% protein)
as your koi are friendly you could try hand feeding them brown bread with honey on, my koi really enjoy it but as they haven't been used to our pond for a while they are a bit shy. but its a nice thing to see anyway. great pond btw
nice koi! i saw this man feeding koi fish mini pork weiners and the koi were munching them down...don't know if this is safe for them but non have died and it's been a while.
Depending on the type of koi, It will range between $200.00 - $1,000.00 for a full grown (12"- 36") sometimes it may range even higher, a koi show in japan sold it's prize winning koi for around $300,000! All prices listed in USD
I made mine 3 feet deep with a 1.5 foot ridge in it, if you have to worry about keeping your fish in there over the winter, make it three feet because the fish stay towards the bottom when the water gets colder
junadian and scuderia, in the winter months koi are adapted to cold weather,1 thing you must know is that they need [alot] of air bubbles in the winter alot], a small heater would do just fine, do feed!only 1 time a week with winter koi food, they can live with total ice cover [with bubbles].in the winter the benifitial bacteria can die off,add more clear enzyme.
i live in the centre of england and it gets pretty cold here at the winter months . my question is ... will i need to add an airpump ? its a 500 gallon pond and has about 20 small medeum sized koi and goldfish
Yes it is certainly best if you do. And because you live in England you should also make sure that the pond is deep enough. The minimum depth for Koi is 120 cm while up to 200 cm is preferred. This has various reasons and one is to keep them warm enough in the winter when ice forms on top. There are also many in Holland who use water heaters to keep the water on a certain minimum temperature. There are tons of websites on how to best keep koi in a pond. Just search google.
hey guys, i have a question, i live near scranton, pa and during the winter it'll get into the teens eventually at night with highs of in the 20's. We have a koi pond about the same size as this vid and 2 1/2ft deep or so. What should we do for the winter? they are still tiny and basically eat whatever is in the pond, lots of algae and stuff. thanks for the help... i just dunno if they can live through the cold, and idk what the water temp will be like
oscar if u are starting a new pond theres 4 things u need to no #1 plenty of water [ciculation] with [biofilters] 2 plenty [air bubbles] 3 [clear enzyeme]4 water conditioner and your good to go plus healty fish + [pond salt] it like antibiotics.where lowes or walmart
well heres some advice on 2 and 3 they can eat koi food anything in high protien and fruit but only waterlemon and oranges and pinnaeple. last one is that koi get an inch a month feed correctly ( about 5 times a day)oo and koi do get enxpensive when there over 6 in they start up to 100 to 300 somtimes

i live in the centre of england and it gets pretty cold here at the winter months . my question is ... will i need to add an airpump ? its a 500 gallon pond and has about 20 small medeum sized koi and goldfish

Wonderful video.
I just have a few questions:
1. How big were the koi when you got them?
2. What do you feed them?
3. How long did it take them to grow that big?
I'm an amature at growing koi, so I'm looking for advice.
Once again, nice video! ^_^
