@Unknownframes It drove great till I started messing with things lol. Was not the cars fault, I made the mistake that put her on jack stands for the time being.
@TexasAceAA ahhh man! sorry to hear that. Im might be getting it down hear in cali. Have to get new breaks and whole bunch other crap. Im not a DIY kinda guy, so its gonna cost me some. How much horsepower? mpg? roughly
You live in Texas right? Did you have any problem with the inspection on that 3rd gen swap? Is it still obd1? I'm thinking about doing a 3rd gen swap. What about parts? Are the 2nd gen parts interchangeable with the 3rd gen motor?
@yelnatsmada No problems at all, Texas is not Cali, you can pass just about anything with a little work. In this case All I needed for it to pass out of the box was a cat.
Parts are no harder to get then a 2nd gen 3sgte. Some parts are interchangeable, some are not.
is it plug and play? i'm going to do the same swap on my friend's 93 and the engine comes with everything, but one of the plugs were cut off so i'm not sure if that would work or not.
@MrKaoVue DSM's (aka, eclipse/talon) are good learning cars since they always have something going wrong and are cheap to fix. They are also a lot cheaper to make power out of then an MR2 when on a budget. Plus no one cares if you ruin one of them when learning.
The MR2 makes for a good 2nd or 3rd tuner car, after you have a little experience and get the ricer out of your system. Done right they are very reliable but they do cost more to work on and make power.
@TexasAceAA Hmm, alright. would you recommend this car to someone whos an entry level of tuning? a first time turbo car to play with, tune, bolt ons and what not?
@MrKaoVue It is a fun car and pretty easy to work on. It really comes down to budget, if you are on a tight budget something like a DSM will be cheaper to work on and make fast.
The MR2 will be more reliable but it costs more when things do go wrong. If you have the funds to buy a good condition MR2 (at least $6000+ for a good condition turbo, more if it is modded) then it will be the better car unless you plan to go for big power
@lianperry No, none of the 3sgte's are OBD-II. They stopped selling the MR2 in the US in 95 due to the OBD-II actually. Otherwise we would have got them till 98 when they stopped production.
@MR25SFETR This engine came from ATS Racing, I have since gone on to blow it up along with 2 more, i also got a motor from EMSpowered. Then my latest is somones old motor.
lol, yeah this was the first time it was drivable in 2 years, it had not got any love for some time. I cleaned it up a few weeks later and it loooked much better....for about 2 months. now i just wax it every few months to keep it looking good. Needs a paint job bad but performance before looks.
Yeah I have a Gen2 w/ mods, I got the "Greddy style' intercooler kit too, definitely get that hot pipe though completes the kit. Where in TX are you at bro? I'm in Houston
whats up man i have a 92 turbo mr2 i swap a jdm 3rd gen 3sgte engine but am having trouble with the engine wiring harness it would be nice if you can help out cause i miss driving my car
The engine harness? Well if you got the swap from a good shop then it should have come with the engine and be complete. If not then sorry not much i can tell you as i just plugged mine in.
I just bought my MR2 Turbo last night and drove it home. I love it by the way. I am going to get the 3rd gen 3sgte engine included in my GT-Four ST205 front clip for my conversion. But the question is, what is the best way to swap out the motor in the MR2? After looking at mine, it looks like dropping it from under the car is the easiest, but I wanted to ask someone who has did it before.
Well for 1 thing i would consider getting an MR2 motor, there are a LOT of things you will have to change out on the motor froma GT4 to make it work on an MR2, virtually everything on the outside of the motor. And finding those parts is not easy or cheap.
And yes you take the motor out the bottom of the MR2, just drop the motor/Tranny all as 1 unit
Oh I know, because the 3rd gen 3sgte motor for the Celica is different from the MR2. Like the intercooler. I can get a motor for the MR2 tubo, I was just wondering, and I just wanted to throw it out there about the GT-Four conversion, because it is kind of exciting, while being a HUGE task.
Why would you say that? it was the first start, i had already bled the coolent as best i could using a trick i learned from ATS. I then bled the rest after it was warm. I didn't want coolent flying all over the engine bay so of course i put the cap on.
Well, I guess. Everyone has there differnt ways of inital start up. I dont even use them hoses. I jack up the car so that the neck is at the highest point, and use a small funnel, seal the funnel on the neck so that it allows coolant to overflow into the neck and you can release the bubbles and allow the car to not boil over all over the motor. I take it you just wanted to start it for youtube and more things to do before you did this ;-)
Pretty much, this had been a long swap and i just wanted to see it start myself.
I used the funnel trick to bleed it, you seal the funnel and then squeez the collent hose and it will bleed out 90% of the air. the last little bit i just fill up after each drive and after a few days it is full. Works great for me.
I just bought an mr2 about a week ago and the paint looked about the same as yours. I spent about 20 hours buffing it with 3m rubbing compound and it looks WAY better. Hopefully you'll be able to see it if u accept the friend request
Yep, i did the same thing to mine and it looked REAL nice....For about 2 months. Now it is faded again, not as bad as before but it is bad. I plan to rebuff it sometime but it needs a paint job long term.
Or i can wax it regularly, nah too much work...lol
It will most likly fade again, it will still look better then before but unless you wax it regularly it will still fade. The red cars didn't come witha clear coat for some reason which is why almost all red MR2's are faded.
I thought none of them had clear coat in that era. Mine is aquamarine pearl and mine faded too. Just got finished repainting original color with clear coat. It looks better than when I bought it. Anyways, nice swap. I have a 91 with the same swap. Enjoy and treat with care.
Lot of things actually, it comes down to 50 hp more stock and the ability to get a lot more out of the 3rd gen stock. Once you start modding them a lot they are about the same though.
what is the thing right beside the fuse box on the fire wall? also there is a hose under the blow off valve on the turbo charger plumbing what does that go to??? any help would be appreachiated!
Thanks, it is still running great 4 months, 1000 miles (i don't drive much) and 1 track day later. It is getting a new turbo next week that should net me 350rwhp+ and some new wheels/tires.
This was actually a 1993 Turbo car to start with, the PO had run it too hard and caused a knock so teh old engine had to go.
The 93 body harness plugs right up to the 3rd gen swap, no splicing. Only thing that you have to do yourself is take out the fuel pump resister and wire in the AC idle up.
No diagram, the resister is easy, just cut it out and then splice the 2 wires that went into it together, and you have now bypassed it.
I have not worried about the AC idle up, on my car it seems to still idles fine with the AC on, just a little lower then normal so i don't know if i am going to worry about it.
Don't feel too bad, honestly an MR2 is NOT a good first car. They are an advanced drivers car, it is easy to get yourself killed if you don't know how to drive (and i mean how to really drive). Now after you know how to drive, find one and get it, it is the most fun car to drive i have ever had!
Didn't I just sell you a berk dp on the OC?? Looks like you have the same name except with two A's on the end. hehehe Nice to know that SHE LIVES and purrs like a Kitten!! lol
this is what I'm thinking to do my mr2 as well. hows she driving?

mehrshadvr4 5 months ago
@mehrshadvr4 It was plug and play in my 93 turbo chassis. For an NA or earlier model you will have to move some wires around.
If a connector is cut off you will either need to wire in a new connector or get a new harness.
TexasAceAA 5 months ago
a DSM? man..never thought of a DSM, is that American tuned? how is it cheaper to work on and make fast than a MR2?
MrKaoVue 7 months ago
@MrKaoVue DSM's (aka, eclipse/talon) are good learning cars since they always have something going wrong and are cheap to fix. They are also a lot cheaper to make power out of then an MR2 when on a budget. Plus no one cares if you ruin one of them when learning.

how easy is the swap?
MrKaoVue 7 months ago
@MrKaoVue It depends on what model you start out with. I had a 93 turbo car to start out with so the swap was literally plug and play.
With earlier 91-92 turbo cars you have to do some minor re-wiring but still an easy almost plug and play swap.
With any NA car you have to also change out the hubs, axles, brakes ect. Still bolt in but takes more work.
Overall with a friend you should be able to finish the swap in a weekend pretty easy regardless of which car you have.

I have never herd of that, how long do you squeeze the hose before you know the air is out with the motor off?

Till you stop having to add coolent. It doesn't get it all out but it gets most of it.
