@SwollenCranium I don't think you heard him correctly, maybe you should replay the video. Johann made a very clear argument asserting the extreme conditions that these poor people are worked to. It's an important message that people should understand and be made aware of.
Johann Hari does have important things to expose. Trouble is who believes him now. As soon as anything seems a little exaggerated we are reminded of his plagiarism and deceit and theft of others' work. He is hoist by his own petard and no longer credible. He's been shown to be an absolute liar too many times now. His career as a respected journalist is now over.
@planetmax83 Capitalism is the only system that can feed 7 billion people?
Sorry buddy but Capitalism is the only system you've been brought up to BELIEVE can feed 7 billion people. We have enough resources in this world to feed, clothe and provide for every single individual. Capitalism doesn't work, that's what history shows us. Sadly we haven't caught on yet.
I know its really immature seeing as how the subject matter is serious, and I don;t condone this kind of thing at all, but did any one hear Johann Hari say, 'after taking a 35 hour shit'... at 0:27 lol
BoingBoing posted an article yesterday that says Foxconn employees have to sign promises not to commit suicide.
The news originates from a recently published research report from the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations and Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (Sacom).
The report documents the terrible working conditions at the giant Chinese manufacturing company.
Despite Hugo Lindgren's claims to the contrary, it looks like things havn't changed at Foxconn.
Clearly, not buying these products is not the solution. The problem we face is so many of the products we regularly buy are made under these conditions, not just popular branded consumer electronics, (think about the amount of things you see 'made in China' on)
To sell electronics in the EU you have to meet EU safety standards to prove it is safe, perhaps we should have similar standards which need to be met on conditions of workers producing it?
I understand the plight and how wrong it is, but everything I buy is made over seas, and I'm not going to research every product for hours on end to make sure its made right. Change has to come from within'. I'd love it if they brought their standards up to ours, because we would not have much of a reason to have jobs sent over there and we could keep jobs here.
If we (a small percentage of the overall consumers) stop buying the products, will it be for better or for worse? Would it just cause the already minute wages to hit rockbottom?
I am totally against what is going on, but have we created irreversible monstrosities?
re 'bugger'- as a brit i found the use of the word interesting - where i live the phrase 'you little bugger' would jovially be used to an impish child doing something mildly offensive like letting off a fart. Instead of saying 'oh fuck' when i've hit my thumb with a hammer instead of a nail i might well use the term. According to one author the word comes from 'bulgare' when anything erotic was thought to come from the east.I think you were joking anyway Bjarku. Child labour everywhere.Bugger!
Yeah sure, buy them in America! Where in fact a great number of products is being made by inmates, most of them sentenced with irreal jail punishments, and of which a great deal are innocent! Long live kapitalism! Apalogies for spelling errors, English is not my native language...
@Tac0Jan It's true that many products in this country are made by inmates, but I don't understand what you mean by saying that most of the inmates are innocent. In what sense? What are you talking about?
Here's a solution for you...BUY AMERICAN!!!!! Boycott those companies that export and outsource labor. Keep Americans working and force the corporations to bring jobs back to this country
Here's a solution for you...BUY AMERICAN!!!!! Boycott those companies that export and outsource labor. Keep Americans working and force the corporations to bring jobs back to this country
@thrakar1 That is it.. But people just end up buying what they can, where they can, for the best price they can. Its not their fault, the companies know cheap labour brings cheap prices for the consumer so the buck stops with them. Its up to these companies to quit being so damn greedy and think with compassion. Its amazing how making a profit trumps a guilty conscience. If these companies cared about the American people they would stop this, but they won't. Your currency is worth more than you.
Am I the only one cynical enough to suspect that the only reason the plight of Chinese workers is being highlighted now is because the US wants new consumers?
@Tuppington Yes. The plight of Chinese workers is highlighted in this clip is because Dylan is the sort of presenter who would talk about it. Also, it's because the Chinese are getting fed up and are demanding the right to form unions. And the companies are panicking....which is the real reason why it's more of a news item now. Did you even watch & listen to the clip?
Makes you think about the behind-closed-doors implications of tech stories such as 'Apple ramping up iPad supplies for holiday season'. I imagine winter is an even more hellish time for the workforce in these factories.
Looking at Foxconn as an example is fine, but could we discuss the reeducation-through-labor camps ['laogai'] in China? - aka people who are sent to prison without due process and forced to cruel labor throughout their imprisonment?
@queenpanda The problem at the moment is not whether people are going to do something or not, its more about informing consumers about the inequity, which will then lead to a drop in product sales within the organisation, forcing them to change the system. The only problem is that these debates are hidden from the mainstream media which prevents this change from happening.
Johann is amazing.
