  • Do not turn with your shoulders! Do not rotate your upper body! Your shoulders and hips should always be in line with the board. If you rotate your upper body you will skid the board instead of carving. Use pressure in the front foot (heel or toe, as appropriate) to initiate a turn and finish on the corresponding back heel or toe ready to then move to the front foot again for the next turn.

  • thx that helped a lot

  • Lol he just said not to use your legs and to use your shoulders this is horrible please don't do this snowboarding is 95% lower-body and weight distribution.

  • Cool I live there!!

  • So I can't figure out how to turn on my toes, I can turn on my heels just fine but every time I go to my toes I fall forward on my knees. Any advice??

  • @Lex1love curve your body backwards as you go on your toes, it helps to counter balance everything. well at least for me it does C:

  • AHH I FORGOT SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME I WENT SNOWBOARDING 2 YEARS AGO AND LEARNED HOW I FORGOT IF IM RIGHT U NEED TO HAV U TOES UP WHEN UR RIDING AND GET UR BOARD D IN FRONT OF U AND LEAN BACK LIFITNG SIDE OF THE BOARD TO STOP RIGHT???HELP!!

  • Im goofy and I love it like a fat kid in a cake shop

  • @xurulo Girls with the hips guys not :P

  • Go Regular! ;D

  • @xurulo they suck theyr just giving us their own opinion of how to snowboard, my advice would be to find what works for you, find your style and have fun

  • coming from an AASI level 2 certified instructor.. doing anything with your shoulders is the last thing you wanna do. lol. anyone that knows how to snowboard knows this. i feel sorry for the people trying to learn from watching.

  • @Phobos6789 lol hes explaining the easiest way to learn turning...after you learn this you can do it any way you wish...I dunno how about you but Ive been learning just like this

  • Maybe the feet?!!! Hmmm, they are connected to the board....aren't they?

  • @xurulo i think this guys confused because your shoulders turn your hips. what he's saying is, don't flick your legs back and forth to turn, a lot of people try and turn with their back foot; turning your shoulders will turn your hips.

  • God your goggles are gay!!

  • It's amazing the amount of haters on you tube that slate other people videos. He is teaching you how to turn using the CASI techniques. It might not be the cleanest most technical ride to snowboard but its the easiest way to learn. I'm a BASI instructor and we teach teach people differently, we teach the foot steering method to make basic turns. Different organisations have different methods. If you think your a better instructor then why do you become qualified.

  • thumbs up if you think expert village has to much of the same videos

  • fuck it, im gonna go snowboarding down a big ass hill with absolutley ZERO practice.. FUCK LIFE!!!!

  • @TouchMulaGANG

I did that too...i almost broke a wrist and hit my head hard.

  • Lol i thought his name was matt biganus!!

  • using your shoulders to turn is not the best way-look up snowprofessor they have the best lessons -people have been brainwashed into thinking its your shoulders-

  • word, freasee...

best advice i've read on this topic yet. All hips and weight distribution...

  • If you have problem with toeside turns, it helps you get used to the turn by squeezing your knees together a little bit.

But don't use that to turn. You'll break your legs. Only do that to get a feel for the toeside turns.

  • ffs.. where can i learn to break :D

  • fucking shit 1 minute video !!!

    So useless

  • i want to go to a park but my hand is broken :(

  • i'd like to learn snowboarding

  • this iss what i need to learn haha :)

  • man i can't wait to get back to the slopes...

  • That's a lie the feet have to come before your body or you will eat it hard

  • Don't forget your ithreesixty music infused apparel for snowboarding

  • @etannoom stop spaming asshole!!!

  • @thebomb164 its not spamming if all you have to do is search to win free gear, and i'm just trying to better my chances of winning something good, so why don't you check it out before you open your mouth

  • ok i'm sorry i got a bit agro!

    lol

  • no , it is right fot down the hill is goofy

  • i thought left foot forward is goofy aint it?

  • @Helios374

    fail

  • no right foot forward is goofy

  • i agree its all in the hips not the shoulders thats how i learned....... ne way i want that coat!

  • i dont want to sound like a know all. Ive got my instructors qualification and i used the moving of the hips across the board to switch edges(not the shoulders). To inciate the turn i would highly recommend twisting the snowboard. Looking where your going is majorly important and by this i mean looking across the hill not down the hill. He is correct in the you want to be perpendicular to the slope. Shoulders is 4 more dynamic turning later on in riding not really for beginners. Ask me if u wnt

  • @subzerostorm ur right, so is the guy on the video.. its a mix to actually do it right :D

so u teach newbies to snowboard?

  • @m0n3y1992

yer i teach beginners and intimediate riders. Depends i wouldnt tell a beginners to move his shoulders. I would advise that the student keeps his shoulders parrarel with the board. How they should turn is by creating twist in their board, leaning alittle forward to match the angle of steepness(so ur not to far back like this guy says),remain centred point ur knee in the direction you wna go shift the hips over the desired edge and look across the hill. Do u hve ur qualification2?

  • @subzerostorm

ah okiee, no i am not a ski/snowboard teacher.. im learning to ride myself. :)

but what u said makes more sense than the guy here..

i did what Matt said here and my backside gets dragged .. if i do what u say then i would probably do a clean and much noiseless carve.. :D

next time i go to resort i will keep my shoulder even with the board and use my heel and toe only to turn :)

  • Finnaly! Some people talking about things that makes sense instead of making everything in to a argument! Happy to read that! =)

  • @subzerostorm you want to move your center of gravity, which both things doo

  • i use me feet. u may not understand but i push my front foot 4ward to turn right. and back to turn left

  • . once mastered u can turn the board pretty much 180 degrees with your upper body practically stationary by just using your feet, great for descending a steep hill with bumps, u have stability and excellent speed control if need be. very safe ;) PS this guy is standing regular

  • PRO TIP: bend the board! for example, facing the hill going downwards and u are going to turn so ur back faces the hill after the turn, u make your front foot toes point up and the backfoot toes point down. makes the board slide and thus turn loads easier in the direction u desire. otherway around for the turn back, frontfoot down backfoot up, try it "stoppy" sliding first to get a hang of the pointing ul see what it does.

  • i think i shoulda watched these videos before i went out tday..haha went to swiss valley and just ate up the hills with my ass and face..but i got the hang of it eventually

  • good stuff mate everyone starts somewhere :)

  • hey man you should try to hit the ramp at the swiss valley (not the gap) its sweet

  • Good :)

  • good

    verry good

  • I think the biggest thing is just getting comfortable. easier said than done I know but if you can force yourself to stop being scared I think you'll start to do a lot better with ease.

  • your vids helped me alot.

  • Although I don't know much about the "shoulders vs. hips" method of turning (I'm pretty sure i turn with my hips), he's right on about either being centered or leaning forward. It took me a year to actually listen to my board instructor about leaning forward cuz I was nervous about it and it made all the difference in the world.

  • most people do some combination of hips AND shoulders its really whats comfortable for each individual rider. . .

  • the other "expert" said it was all in the hips not shoulders...

  • @ruckenfigur

its in both, more so shoulders

  • this is the first time they ever gave good advice finally congratz to expert vill

  • all the instructors i've seen have been starting with how to turn as their first lesson. shouldn't they teach you how to stop and control you speed first? i guess it does require you to know how to turn as well but i think that stopping and controlling your speed is most important.

  • @zxelon02 , I think it's because turning is the very basis of controlling your speed, and stopping is an exaggerated form of turning. Plus, if you're learning on a small enough hill or "bunny hill", which you should be if you're a beginner, the bottom of the hill will ease you to a stop automatically. Learning to turn enables you to make it to the bottom without going too fast and without catching an edge / falling.

  • Oi everyone stop bloody being up your self by saying "you use your hips to turn'' it doesn't really matter, if your smart enough you can learn both ways. I'm going to Melbourne in 4 days and i need to learn to snowboard so shut the hell up!

  • Maybe a little late, but good luck. Just remember falling is alllll part of it :)

  • shoulder placement is NOT the right way to go. Beginners need to learn weight placement first.

  • What if I wanan go really fast and straight? not slow down and not turn, THEN WHAT

  • these vidoes r fucking stupid ive been boarding for bout 7 years now you turn with your hips and maintain the balance with your shoulders fucking at least get it right before you post these video's think of the people goin up to the moutains now and learning it all wrong bcoz of u

  • so i shouldent do what they say.

  • do you even know what your talking about? i bet your forum is really sloppy. A buddy of mine is an instructor for parkcity in utah, ask any real seasoned instructor on how to proporly snowboard this is what they would tell you

  • yeah ive boarded for 5 years and have skied for 3 when i snowboard it helps if you kinda pop your hips into the turn. kinda hard to explain

  • I always get leaning backwards its frustrating as hell

  • Yup, and when your front foot comes up and you end up going over the tail of the board, it fricking hurts :) I know that feeling.

  • Yeah but you gotta try to learn all you can to help you stay on track during your trial and error. It took me awhile to learn proper linked turns for a few sessions i just bsed them. then i watched as many videos as i could then took that with me to the hill and bingo i learned.

  • You dont know what you are talking about, i learned to snowboard by just watching these videos

  • awesome!

  • You just turn your hip slightly the direction you want to go. All about the torso movement.

  • BRRRT:

    Wrong

    youll spin out

  • lol this dood is wrong

  • what he's trying to say is that for a beginner, your supposed to drop your shoulder and that will follow your hips...maybe you do it another way, but he is obviously teaching other people ANOTHER way

  • Thats all wrong i've seen lots of boarding instruction videos and very say it not about shoulders and that if your using them that's just a bad habit.

  • i did notice that with most experienced riders. they never turn their shoulders.

  • Sometimes I turn with my shoulders just because it feels cool, if you learn the shoulder way first it makes it much easier.

  • No you suck at snowboarding

  • honestly you should take lessons and learn to board your own way

  • snowboard 4 life

  • agreed

  • i miss snowboarding :(

  • @Fernandez102 doesn't everybody :(

  • This video is a perfect example of WHAT NOT TO DO!

Is this really expert village or a bad joke? You will do youself a serious injury if attempting to snowboard this way. Guaranteed! This guy is not a snowboarder, he's a bloody organ donor waiting to happen

markussiwald is correct. THE best thing to do is get a lesson. Do it properly and it's safer for everybody, much easier too and much more enjoyable!

  • agreed this video needs to be taken off immediately!!! you NEVER turn with your shoulders.

  • or hips

    only carve

thats the only way to turn

  • yay michigan!

    gotta love it here :)

  • NEVER TURN WITH YOUR SHOULDERS!!!

sry, but this is not good. if you want to learn snowboarding, please ask a real teacher in real life. you can't learn SB on youtube.

  • I turn in unison. Knees / hips / shoulders turn in harmony.

  • I had a kid that tryed to use his hands to turn, he ummmmmmm..................

FPIC FAIL!!!!! thats all he had, i dont know how you can do it but NEVER try to turn with your hands!!!!!

  • lolol

  • I went to andorra last year and I almost kill a boy who was taking skiing lessons..- since then ive got a fuckin backache. this year ill be an expert. thanks

  • in response to bla123bla456:

firstly, if your thinking about going down hills in straight lines on the flat of your board, DONT. its the simplest way to crash and hurt yourself, just carve, until you get seasoned, stay on board edges for maximum control.

secondly, to all the dumasses, if you have ever been snowboarding, and have done it right, then you have used your shoulders and the way you LEAN into a turn, not using your damned legs or hips, sometimes hips work, but its all shoudler work.

  • lol when i first tried snowboardin(3rd grade) i just stood on the board going down the hill...lol i thought that was how u snowboarded lol i flipped forward funny...

  • man im in the 11th grade and thats still how i ride. i have no clue how to carve

  • u seem mad...did someone hurt u as a child??

  • i just need to know one thing

do you stay on an edge the whole time or can you go flat for a wile wen ur goin down the hill

  • you can go down flat on where you dont want to turn, but i would rather turn whole way down, or keep on one edge then switch, it brings for a realy fun ride, and more fun then going down streight, although, many people will have different oppinions ... what ever you feel good with, is the right way to go =D

  • Well if you're still not fully comfortable on your edges I wouldn't try to flat out the board the whole way yet.

The nice thing about flatting out the board is that it gives a bit more freedom for turning. Makes dealing with traffic or narrow paths easier.

Also it helps with long flat stretches that can catch you without enough speed, and then skiers smile as they zip by with their poles. Engaging an edge, however minor, bleeds some speed.

  • ty 4 vid from germany

  • do not look that my comment i postted in accedent or shomething

i mean can you do one video what is like 10 minutes

becouse you have like 1000 videos and i cant know what tricks i shud learn first...

  • please just do one big snowboarding tutorial

but you have like 1000 videos and they are like 1 mins

just do one what is like 10 mins please

  • how do you know?

  • i watched all his snowboard videos and i hardly learned anything, and all of the videos should be compressed into one long video, coz its annoying when i hear the same intro every time, and i learned more from just random videos tht r how-to videos ... his deff arnt the best :)

  • I agree with the comments about shoulders. When I board I use my knees and legs and lean back. Leaning forward just may have you eating snow especially out west in powder. I think it is more the power of your legs that drive a turn and I keep my shoulder slightly parallel and forward with the board. You twist your shoulders you move your upper body when your legs are the ones attached to the board.

  • Well then your new to snowboarding, yes turning your legs will make you turn, but it wont be as sharp and quick. Turning your legs is ok for beginners but if you want to get better then using your upper body will be the best way to go.

  • It's you again sack of cock... you don't turn with your shoulders but by putting your weight on the front edge or on the backside edge, simply...

  • you can turn with your shoulders but it looks messy. turning by bending your knees and shifting weight is the most stylish and smooth way to turn.

  • I agree with albatored and nowaynoah, the proper way to turn would be bending the knees and putting pressure on ur back leg. This allows you to tunr, release the pressure off ur back leg to stop turning, also dont forget to lean in the direction u want to turn.

  • For me I lean forward & focus on the pressure going on the outer-sole of my front foot, this aims the turn, & also takes weight off of the back foot, allowing it to swing left & right more freely to be used to create drag & push yourself across the trail. Kind of like pushing a shopping cart backwards. You have to lean forward, you're going downhill anyway, don't try & fight it or you just end up on your ass.

  • of all the comments here, yours is one of the best.

  • @honoluludon, thanks =]

  • i think its easer for beginners to turn with the shoulders. thats how alot of people learn

  • hey do you know that it´s a ghost in your video XD look at the first second... how the shadow comes from the wall xD .. btw i love your snowboarding lessons
