If you are referring to his ability to keep time, then by that measure a drum machine has the same talent.
But his ability to create his own distinct nuance, phrases, and reference, is second to none! That being said there is no "best drummer" or "best guitarist" terms are subjective!
0:42 He tucks the drumstick under his arm, grabs the mallet and slams the gong, while playing consistently, not faltering at all. That's Danny Carey and Drums for you. Like a boss...
someone posted that you can hear like 20+ mistakes. ive been avidly drumming for a year and barely consider one small thing i saw a mistake. i thing even god messes up...on purpose lol!!!
Danny Carey is, in my opinion, the greatest drummer alive. His creativity and technique surpasses any other drummer. Neil Peart, Portnoy and all of those great drummers got nothing on this guy.
@FireWalkWithMe67 i only say those guys are "better" than carey for a reason. Danny Carey is the best drummer for the band tool period. he comes up with the most stunning drum parts any rock drummer has played in history. In fact i would go as far to say that he is the greatest rock drummer ever. But the fact is that colaiuta can play anything u put in front of him, with feel and creativity that danny could never fully master, same goes for novak, these two guys are on a whole nother level
It's not the complexity that matters. If you're too focused on that, than you miss the point. It's about the music. Sure, it's great to have chops, but the music is what matters. Play for the song.
why is it that on every drum video on youtube you see someone comment about how travis barker/joey jordison/whoever is better? do people do it just to see everyone's reaction? seriously, if you're watching a video of a certain drummer, talk about the drummer you're watching or shut up. if you want to talk about how great travis barker is, go watch a video of him playing.
Some things in Music are developed with in time, it's not just skill.... people has an incredible virtue, but he was not born that way, time and experience gave him the TOOL to become this way
danny carey is the only drummer that can turn a tribal beat of 20 drummers into a polyrhythmic masterpiece of one person, 2 sticks, one drum kit, and endless amounts of skill...
@mmcakes100 This video is nothing. Check other videos of Danny. And definitely listen to Tool's tracks, like Right in Two, Rosetta Stoned, The Grudge, etc.

@JuiceBoxter71 Are you on crack? Like for real, go listen to bands where the members don't have to wear make up and get magazine covers to sell records.
@noogai132 Danny's much more dedicated to the music than Tony. Tony is all flash and chops, but he could never come up with a polyrhythm like what Danny does in 'Rosetta Stoned'. Danny has chops, too, but never shows them unless it will benefit the music. That's why I like Danny. Him and Vinnie Colaiuta think the same way. Tony still has some maturing to do.
@PoeticJustice05 I'm sorry but I find your comment presumptive. Not that I am saying one of these terrific musicans are better than the other(because really if they are, does it change our enjoyment of listening to their music/) but you are talking about two completley different genres of music. There are clips of both Danny Carey and Tony Roster performing things that are out of their nature. Again, I dare not say one drummer is better than the other but their on the same level of mastery
@juddgreg333 I never said Danny was better. What I said is backed up by Tony himself. He's said he can't do polyrhythms, that it's something he has to work on. He has out of this world chops, but he still has maturing to do.
@PoeticJustice05 i assume you're talking about tony royster....well what do you expect, his dad was an amazing drummer, then he gets all this spotlight at 12, what do you think that does to a person that young and with that much talent? and he has matured, he is a very sick drummer, and he has way more structure in his music now....just because it's not in your style doesn't mean he doesn't have any style, he is a gospel drummer, and that's a whole other ball park!
@xxxslayerxxx666 Never said he doesn't have style, of course he does, but his playing still has some maturing to do, because he relies too much on his chops. At this stage, he could never come up with polyrhythmic rhythms like Danny does, so that's what I mean. He should focus less on chops and more on his rhythmic vocabulary.
@PoeticJustice05 if you want polyrhythmic stuff then listen to matt halpern and travis orbin....and this is insanely polyrhythmic /watch?v=cGlYTBNjzz0
and latin music is insanely technical (and horacio hernandez is the top dog in that genre!) /watch?v=e95mqonTJCE
@noogai132 There is this thing called Musicianship that Tony Royster Jr. seems to not care about. Anyone who says anyone is better than anyone else needs to learn about it too.....It's not a contest, so shut up and enjoy the music.
@Pattonkv ummmm, are you kidding me!? Dannys placement is amazing, he doesn't have to play fast or anything, but the places he puts those notes, awesome.

@thequadfather4 yeah they are very cool drummers, in fact i saw blake live, he rules, very very nice, but i think you´re agree with me about danny carey, i mention that drummers but its obvious that out there are more and more insane drummers
@thequadfather4 No offence, but the drummer for Between the Buried and Me is not even close to the likes of Peart, Portnoy, Carey, Bonham......you get the idea.
Im a drummer myself, ive been playing for 15 years if that means anything, and i have listened to this song a lot.Its one of my favorites. However its one of the most simple songs on any of the albums imo similar to the likes of Parabola.Id liked to have seen The Patient or something with his signature intricate rhythms and ever changed off time sigs...In response to your reply ...thats what im talking about.
there is a band call LizZard on earth, in france for the moment and soon coming up in Canada, they re produced by Rhys Fulber(fear factory, paradise lost...)
and if you like the Danny Carrey skills, what would you think about a FEMALE Danny Carrey?!!
her name is Katy Elwell, she is the drummer of the band LizZard and if you want to see that by your self write
what are you talking about? Lateralus was some of his greatest drum work with Tool, and the Lateralus album probably had his best drum work on it. Listen to the full song.
okay. I am a drummer, have been playing for about 7 years. I do not, will not, and should not ever understand why people think Danny Carrey is one of the best drummers in the world. Maybe I haven't heard enough of him, but as far as THIS video is concerned, i know 5 year olds who can play better shit. And all you hardcore Tool fans Im sure will say "well its not about showing off its about feeling the..."blah blah, fuck that. If hes gonna make a video make it of something not everyone can do.
@klearlykahmerican try listen to Rosetta Stoned (my fav), The Grudge or Tricks and Leeches.. it's some of the Danny Carey songs one can only dream to master
@8iamretarded8 see that is exactly what i mean. you guys are picking out parts that you think are genius and i dont see how it is. 1:30 on is basically the end of the song, he accents the stresses of the other instruments with crashes, a couple fast tom fills and the song ends. just like another comment someone commented about 0:45, which is...A GONG HIT!...and at 1:16-1:17, which is fast 16th nots on two toms...WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?!?!

thequadfather4 10 months ago
@thequadfather4 No offence, but the drummer for Between the Buried and Me is not even close to the likes of Peart, Portnoy, Carey, Bonham......you get the idea.
BXAssasinatorXS 10 months ago
@BXAssasinatorXS no offence taken, everyones allowed their opinion, can't say i agree that's all.

@nightshadetheexorcis

@MyArseX10
what are you talking about? Lateralus was some of his greatest drum work with Tool, and the Lateralus album probably had his best drum work on it. Listen to the full song.
nightshadetheexorcis 11 months ago
Personally i more like Danny Carey himself and his drumming than Tool

@klearlykahmerican try listen to Rosetta Stoned (my fav), The Grudge or Tricks and Leeches.. it's some of the Danny Carey songs one can only dream to master
distubedrat 1 year ago
@klearlykahmerican wot... you mean like...play how he does from 1:30 onwards - but THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SONG???
8iamretarded8 1 year ago
@8iamretarded8 see that is exactly what i mean. you guys are picking out parts that you think are genius and i dont see how it is. 1:30 on is basically the end of the song, he accents the stresses of the other instruments with crashes, a couple fast tom fills and the song ends. just like another comment someone commented about 0:45, which is...A GONG HIT!...and at 1:16-1:17, which is fast 16th nots on two toms...WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?!?!
