It would have been so great if Pink Floyd for the Live 8 had called also on stage Syd,just an appearance...ok that he was not in great conditions but maybe he could appear on stage,so the band could have been fully reunited
Even though David Gilmour wasn't on Piper, this belongs in his repertoire and he makes it his own.
Damnit, Gilmour owns ANY song! It's time the world knew SIR David Gilmour - indeed he already is a knight, by popular acclimation. Let's make it happen for next year!
Absolutely fantastic I wish i was there to hear that David certainly didnt forget where he came from on singing this with the brilliant rick wright RIP
thoose lights hurted my eyes but i dont care i shuted my eyes and let the feeling of all sadness passaway david gilmour and pink floyd make me a very happy 13 year old girl
one of the most underrated pink floyd song. yet one of the best in my opinion. most people who listen to pink floyd have just heard dark side of the moon and the wall. piper at the gates of dawn is just awesome
@karaokekongen that's true i actually don't really like the songs roger waters composes the best ones are david's and rick's like comfortably numb on the wall, and the great gig in the sky in dark side and most of the other songs after roger went away
Gilmour wasn´t in the band when they released piper but he played it live when he replaced syd as guitarist and singer, as can be heard on ummaguma, the live set...
There is an even better live version of Astronomy on pink floyds ummagumma. He also does an amazing version of another of Syd Barretts compositions called dark globe, here on you tube.. although he doesn't do anything from the final cut. He knows a good song does David Gilmour.
True, it's half of Pink Floyd. But more than good enough. This is, in my mind, perhaps the best live rendition of "Astronomy Domine". David does that wail excellently at his accomplished age.
Losing Richard was a sad tragedy. Can you imagine how the rock world will react if David passes on? I'm not looking forward to that day.
they opened with this on the division bell tour in wash dc.....totally took me by surprise...then i thought i was gonna cry...but they came out as a 4 piece to do this...with nick and guy pratt on bass....thank god all that stuff was filmed...i like that rick does the syd parts....it gets no better than this.
I was talking about the final cut. There on the record, are the words "Music by Roger Waters- Preformed by Pink Floyd," Rdaws adressed it on this same page of comments at the bottom and I was agreeing with him.
I miss the Mr. Mason's agressivity on the early Floyd tunes, and on this song. The technical recording/mising standards since DSOTM has left the drummer souding soft and flat, except final cut and In the flesh, with an higly agressive mix with the drum on first plan.
Does anyone understand what I want to say?
The drum is just sounding a bit faded, distant, lacking life.
I use to blame this drumer, but I really apreciate fim playimg Arnold Layne and the new Gilmour stuff.
I sometimes talk way too complicated but hey that's me.. glad that you managed to solve the Helena puzzle.. it's all about David means amazing & complex :)

you, Syd and Ric have always been 'my PF', part of my parallel universe.. David my (does soulmate sound too much) special friend.. I'm so grateful
I think they did meet a few times but don't forget the media and fans seem to want the feud to keep on going. I myself don't get caught up in this stuff. Both are great musicians along with the entire band. Both men just grew up a little later and Richards death hit them both as well as Nick Mason
Gilmour reached out to Waters prior to Momentary Lapse of Reason and the result? - he was brought to court by Waters.
Then prior to recording the Division Bell Gilmour again approached Waters and the result? - he was told to "go fuck himself" by Waters.
All interviews prior to 2002 illustrate a David Gilmour who, although both miffed and hurt by Waters' former totalitarian ways, didn't dismiss working together again.
Today I don't blame Gilmour for the residual feelings.
Gilmour was interested re-uniting with Waters after his 1985 solo work and up until 1994. He tried. Waters gave his famous bitter-entrenched responses and the result is a Gilmour who is doing his own thing.
And Waters is doing his own thing.
That Waters wants to suddenly get back together all of a sudden is a little RICH.
So I personally don't blame Gilmour for not wanting to revisit it. But you blame him for it? - that's pathetic and shows a complete disregard for the history and feelings.
I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan and even I can allow that maybe it's for the better that Gilmour and Waters don't work together again. I understand the whole "it's for the fans" angle but, truth be told, I'm a HUGE fan and am starting to recognize how much safer it is to not blow these two musicians up.
I agree with you, Rabidsenses, and the best thing would be if one or the other is doing a show then maybe either one could be a guest for a few songs. I understand they are in touch with each other, so at least they came that far. But to tour may not be that good anymore.
This is among my favorite Pink Floyd song and I'm glad to see that Gilmour is performing it. I'm a little more partial to faster tempo for it, though. Still 5-star worthy.
f*ckn incredible opener for the division bell tour shows! who ever says dave isnt one of THE GREATS must need a hearing aid or a third eye adjustment! find me someone else who plays precise clean heartfelt cut-throat licks (see shine on you crazy d...) and ill put my mouth to shutting!who the hell put slash in the same ballpark anyway? the dark horse to dave's excalibur will always be Jimmi Page! damn the torpedoes and pass me my Les paul!
all we would need now is syd rising out of no where in his classic robe, straping up his mirrored fender Esquire, and starting the riff. I guess this is yet another tip of the hat to Syd's music.
David Gilmour is a Master of Sound! Even though he doesn't have any special guitar or vocal skills, he have an amazing composing talent and a feeling for music. He makes his music full of power and beauty without shredding 300 b.p.m. Solo in the center of Echoes kicks ass. And he wasn't to Pink Floyd what Slash was to Guns'n'Roses. This is completly different league. I don't mean Slash is worse than Dave, just we can't compare them and their contribution to bands where they were playing...
I love you David, if you ever get unmarried make sure you let me know, I would treat you like a god, you are the only one I would get a divorce for uhhhhhhhh I love you soooo much.....
I love everything about this song, strange sounding harmonies, that classic syd barret guitar tone and everything, the psychedelic lighting and, its just good, really good. :) RIP Rick ):
I just found out that he passed away... what sadness! I'm sure many other's felt that, like me, we knew him through his music. What a charming, sweet, and funny person he was.
Best wishes to his friends and family during this difficult time. He will always be deeply loved.
God this is so painful... this video was shot like a couple of months ago and there was Richard, rocking harder than ever. And knowing he's gone and seeing this... god. Some people should never die. :,(

Then prior to recording the Division Bell Gilmour again approached Waters and the result? - he was told to "go fuck himself" by Waters.

Today I don't blame Gilmour for the residual feelings.
