This video just shows how stupid people were to think suits made that much of a difference. You cant just throw on a suit and swim you still have to work. SUITS MEAN NOTHING!!!!
Ok, let's be fair here. No, the suit is not everything. You are correct that the swimmers that set the records in the suit were still very talented and skilled. However, I wouldn't say suits mean nothing. The records are still beatable, as was demonstrated in dubai and Shanghai last year, but it has become much more difficult without the suits. Rome: 15 World Records for Men, 13 World Records for Women.(That's not counting multiple breaks in one event) Shanghai 2 for Men 0 for Women
@TheBradleyC4 yea but also the contradiction to that is that the suit only does such a little percent of that, while its in the person's mind that they are like "wow, i have the fastest suit in the world so I'm gonna be able to go sooo much faster..." but its now a mental game as well and no I'm not saying the suits mean nothing they do but just they don't play that much of a role and also go back to Rome and Shanghai the difference was that they had full body suits in Rome but not in Shanghai,
@TwistedFately so yes they do make a difference but not that much, and its not easy to get to where they are, I'm just trying to make a little step of where they are now and its painful so yes they are extremely talented, and yes it would be but not impossible to break those records
@TheBradleyC4 I agree. I swim, but I'm 14. If I go put on a full-body I'm not going to swim a world record time. These swimmers still put an amazing and almost surreal amount of effort into what they do. The suit might, and I stretch the might, take off 2 hundredths. More than anything it's mental. You put on the suit and you feel fast so you swim fast. It isn't quite that simple, but that's the general idea.
@wlgoldsmith Interesting. See, like I said I agree the swimmers who broke those world records were very impressive athletes, but what I stress is that the new suits keep them from being able to claim they are best swimmers in history. The friction reduction alone might make for a 2-hundredth difference, but when you look at core compression and flotation, the body suits help alot more than 2-hundredths.
@wlgoldsmith Where you talk about the mental impact of wearing the suits, you are correct in that it makes a difference, however at competitions such as world championships and olympics, swimmers are going to feel fired up and confident regardless of their suits. Do you really think when Michael Phelps broke the 200 free record in beijing in his Lzr, that he was not as pumped up as Biedermann going into Rome? The mentality caused by suits is more impactful in age group swimming, in my opinion.
@wlgoldsmith By the way, it's nice to see other age group swimmers take an interest in the mechanics of swimming, haha. I'm 16, I swim backstroke mainly, out of the Cascade Swim Club in Calgary, Alberta.
I point this out only to be fair to the swimmers in other events, James Magnussen may very well be the best 100 freestyler of all time, going 47.4 in a jammer, but unfortunately Cielo's 46.9 in his rubber bodysuit keeps him from attaining the record. And of course the 200 freestyle, even Phelps in beijing had the LZR body, and then Biedermann lowered it in the rubber bodysuit, now it's down to 1:42.00. That leaves another 2.2 seconds to go from shanghai, which is huge at this level
@TheBradleyC4 its polyurethane not rubber and yea the suits are getting a bit out of hand and they can make all these suits because FINA never said what they meant by "textile"
@TwistedFately sorry, you're right. Rubber is just a slang term I picked up during 2009. Did you see the new FS3 system by Speedo? It's crazy!! Textile to the max
@TheBradleyC4 yea i did and yea its crazy but i think the suit comes up way too high on the stomach a bit excessive thats the only think like being a breaststroker i think the suit will end up sacking you
@splitkostanjeuma You are correct, in that it was not a "suit" record, but Hackett still swam in a full body suit. I respect Yang's record greatly, and obviously Hackett's, because it withstood the polyurethane era. Especially after that 800 freestyle smash in Rome, it was surprising that 1500 record stood at the end of the meet. Link to his record (Underwater view only, sorry) /watch?v=wn-rxOpYujU You can see he's in a full body.
@splitkostanjeuma i know he swam in a full suit but that suit was really bad(compared to the suits of today)so i don't think hackett had any advantage over sun yang
however i believe that sun still has a lot of potential espetially after his 3:40.29 in the 400m(that's my fav even hehe) so i'm actually looking forward to the 400 in london more than the 1500
haha, sorry. I copied the video from another user, who has had it removed since for copyright, and I had to change the video in some manner in order to post it, as youtube will not allow exact duplicates anymore. My other videos are all raw race footage, it's unfortunate this one couldn't be.
