  • as she does not engage in petty bickering and is only keen on sharing the art. Artists should be peaceful, loving and encouraging. The minute we allow negativity to rule our hearts, we create obstacles for ourselves.

    Thanks once again Nick.

  • natyam. This is clearly not Bharata Natyam. If you picture this dance in a typical Mohini Attam outfit, it looks quite different.

I don't see what the issue is in her outfit anyway. I believe innovative ideas can be welcomed as long as it doesn't turn into wearing jeans for a recital.

This is a truly beautiful piece. Tara has demonstrated the ability to appreciate various art forms with her interaction with Monash University etc. I guess this is why she is so successful as she

  • @xangelofmusicx0 You're most welcome. It IS quite a few years old but these kinds of performances must be seen & it's near impossible to get anything from the BBC or any TV stations.

    Nick

  • Thank you for posting this Nick. I have viewed all your posts and Tara is definitely a highly skilled artist.

It is evident that there seems to be a lot of jealousy amongst artists as opposed to encouragement and praise. Tara has contributed immensely to the arts internationally. Art is a universal language, which brings communities together and allows people to understand others. Art styles vary amongst different schools.. for example the valuvoor style and melatur style of dance in bharata na

  • Uhh well, this is Mohiniattam, considering the fact that Im learning this same dance routine..known as the Shabdam, and Tara Rajkumar is teaching it.

Keep in mind that this is a very old video, and the dance, like life, has evolved from this. It is now more feminine and the abinaya is more advanced.

  • @ashyy05

well..that does makes sense..given the history of evolution of mohiniyattam as an art form..

However I am curious..how old is this video ? I learned mohiniyattam in kerala in the 80's ..which was very different from this..

As for the dance routine you must be talking about " Saptham " - a part of Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty amma's repertoire. Also the hair style in this video ( nagalambam) belongs to kalyanikutty amma's style.

" Shabdam " is part of bharathanatyam repertoire..

  • The " adavu"s used are of Mohiniyattam. But that's where the resemblance ends !

  • Mohiniyattam is primarily a lasya style of dance ..has a lot of similarities to kathakali where hastas are concerned...but body language and abhinaya are controlled and feminine..there is no jumping around or sharp and brisk movements. Every movement must continue into the next seamlessly. I see none of the attributes of mohiniyattam here.

  • Awesome video Nick! Good job! Keep up the good work!

  • Excellent. Post this on 'Dynamycdesi' as well. It is also a good site.

  • Very nice presentation!

  • i'm not proffesional about Mohiniattam... but i have feeling, that the dancer has more Bharatnatyam than Mohiniattam way of Abhinaya...

  • I've never seen her do Bharatanatyam, only Mohini Attam & Kathakali. Not to say there's no BN influence.

    Nick

  • If you look carefully at Mohini Attam it almost looks like a cross between BN & Kathakali. It seems to have elements of both but with a certain feminine style of movement. Are there any male exponents?

    Nick

    Nick

  • this is a bharatanayam performance

  • No it's not. I've NEVER seen BN performed even remotely like this even by a bad artiste.

    Nick

  • if this is 'Mohini' attam ( as you claim to be ) then it must a rather aggressive form of attam ( probably Shurpanakha's version) as mohiniaattam is the dance of the enchantress with graceful and sensuous body movements...

  • Do you think M A ONLY has the feminine form of expression? All the Indian classical dances should have a male & female aspect to them.

Maybe we can contact Tara Rajkumar to ask about this issue?

    Nick

  • I believe so... as the name Mohini Attam itself suggests it's the attam (dance) of Mohini ( definitely a woman). You could also contact Dr Neena Prasad, an expert in most south indian classical dance forms- especially mohiniattam.

  • I think for pure feminine form of dancing, Manipuri is the best.

    Nick

  • My understanding is that Mohiniattam is pure Laasya dance where as Mnipuri has got both Laasya and Tandava ( not very feminine)

  • Have you all checked out that Tara profile I've uploaded in 5 parts?

I did the 2 missing parts now. See what you think!

    Nick

  • @tharaanup What? Hun! I'm her student..and No this is not a bharatnatyam performance! it's Mohiniyattam

  • Great - I'll keep watching.

I don't know what method you use, but I get excellent results with my Canopus ADVC-300 converter to capture VHS.

  • I only use this lower quality standard so it doesn't take so long to upload it. The 'full' version is on my computer at home.

    Nick

  • This is a beautiful video tripmonk - I am very keen to look at the others you have on your channel page. Thanks very much for posting it!

  • I'm in the process of getting my vast collection of VHS videos onto the computer. There's many more yet, friend.
