  • The nature of a city like NY is that it's.....well.....a city. This necessarily includes activities and dynamics that are illegal, distasteful, moronic, ill planned and aesthetically not homogenous. Billboard posting and flyer pasting without permit is almost as old as printing itself. 19th century New York City was notorious for this practice no less than today. Circus & show posters anyone? Yes, in the stealth of night like today. So much for those fools who claim a "more innocent time."

  • great campaign

  • It was cool to whitewash the advertising, but then you turn around and commit the same crime of trashing the landscape with your 'art'. You are just as guilty as the advertisers. Not everybody wants to see the 'art' you have posted. Can't you see that you are doing the EXACT SAME THING as the advertisers? Did you have city permits to post your 'art'? I seriously doubt it. You should go back and whitewash all of the 'art' that you posted illegally. It wasn't about eliminating the advertising.

  • @mileyondisney I hear you on street art being as obnoxious as a billboard in the sense that pedestrians are forced to look at it. The difference lies within the intention; street art's purpose is to beautify the city, a billboard wants to sell you bullshit. Which would you rather see?

  • @thekskill but it's still illegal

  • @mileyondisney your missing the point that its public space for normal people like you and I, not for some big corporation to through advertisement in your face illegally at that, the corporations did it and no one said anything but the public can't do the same?

  • big ass corp are now trying to turn to illegal advetisment for bassiclly free ad

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWW

  • What are your thoughts on 'Clean Advertising' by Green Street Media - do you welcome this??

  • Hmm... freeze frame 1;42 of video... What side of Williamsburg is this? The Northside or the Controversial Southside that averted bicycle path down Bedford Avenue? Yea, Williamsburg ran by Colonialists' in making their Colony off limits as public space to bicycle traffic. Can't go Green down Bedford avenue nor being scantily-clad via not breaking any obscenity laws. Thanks Mayor (Mad Mike) Bloomberg who did enough damage to small business by inflicting wrath. NYC a Gulag State under Bloomberg.

  • Plain and simple…apparently there was no crime committed against the City of New York. NYC has Five State Counties, New York, aka Manhattan, Kings aka Brooklyn, Richmond aka, Staten Island, Queens as home of the NY Mets and the Bronx as home of the World Famous NY Yankees. Go Bronx Bombers 2011… and a famous Bronx's cheer to all who oppose…

  • @thekskill Ok rewatched the video. Now i understand. I want 2 do this in Chicago. Ill do some research

  • Currently in NYC, purchasers of counterfeit aka, knock-off goods may face arrested if NYC Councilwoman Margret Chin’s Bill is passed…Soon your tween-ager may be arrested for her pocketbook, shoes or knockoff baseball cap… Google: NY Daily News, Councilwoman Margret Chin’s bid to criminalize buying counterfeit goods. Why in NYC you can’t dial in on a public payphone?

  • @00sophie Hope you teach your students about censorship and the mindset of those who advocate, not forgetting book burning and ramifying consequence via public outcry and mass hystera to Instigate false accusations, which is essentially similar though not necessarily identical to the victims of the Salem Witch Burnings.

  • Plain & simple, If I was a permit holder of construction fence/barricade and ‘MY Fence/Property’ was altered via anyone tampering with it, in usage of tools aka, paint brushes or rollers, and public got hurt after the fact of tampering, via any reason, I will bring all the whitewashers as individuals into a law-suite as co-defendants, in adhesion for tampering with something they had no rights to touch, which wont be frivolous litigation and my lawyers will earn their money.

  • The question is, these billboard postings are on private property, if property owner consents or permit holder for construction fence deems ok, then it’s not illegal. These are not metal signs fastened by mechanical means, though as wall paper having no potential of public safety issues regarding stability i.e. weather related fatigue. What’s the difference if signs are wall papered or individually hand painted? Soon people won’t be allowed to advertize on their trucks that are in public space.

  • Id wish theyd do this in Chicago. So the companies put there ads up illegally?

  • This is so awesome

  • YES YES YES YES!!!1 GOOD JOB!!!

  • Wish we had some people like these guys in Portland to cover up the graffiti here with some good art. It's not like there's any shortage of good artists in Portland.

  • @Marauder667

Here is something to know about true Graffiti artists. /watch?v=_0Zt_NeNAuo

  • This is stupid.

  • @mdmayhew Why?

  • these two cities in Mexico, Mexico City & Monterrey is full of these illegal advertising. this type of ideas should be implemented as well in my corrupt country

  • Wow....Only in NYC… If this happened in another municipality such as Small Towns and Villages (Kangaroo Courts) where Lay Justices [non-lawyer judges] preside, outcome may have been different. Good thing the Criminal Judges in NYC are Lawyers and are not part time Judges that are full time Truck drivers or landscapers with only credentials of having is a High School diploma, further good thing Lay Justices can’t wear the Black Satin Cap, though they can sentence up-too a two year jail period.

  • @johnnybagofdonets So these companies put there ads up illegally? How can I check if they do that in Chicago which im sure they do. So i can paint them over

  • @Ratm4life Hmm…as Devils Advocate, Why paint them over? seems like you’re advocating censorship in going on white washing campaign. Soon whitewashers may go after individuals and their yard sale signs affixed to utility poles or the little kid with a lemonade stand sign on the corner. Is the First Amendment truly safe? Maybe metal heads will get arrested for noise pollution when someone complains about their boom-box being to loud while sitting on a park bench.

  • @johnnybagofdonets Well from the videos info what I thought was companies illegally put there shit up w/o a warrant. There using the public space. If I do that or ARTISTS do that. We will probably getting arrested. And no I believe i the 1st amendment as much as the next bloke. And I would never want to close a lil girls lemonade stand! What kind of monster do u think I am!? lol =]

  • @Ratm4life w/o permission/ permit I meant. Not a warrant.

  • @Ratm4life You’re no monster, though I revere as someone with intellect. I’m a spin doctor in many forums. Q: How could something affixed on private property is declared as public space? Public space in one format is a recreational area having seating accommodations inside buildings property line accessible to general public as variance or tax break . Q: Is something inoffensive via obscenity standards, in plain sight on private property is declared public space, if seen from public property?

  • No I hate censorship

  • @Ratm4life

Thought Police are everywhere. Look what happened to cigarette companies such as Winston as censored in advertizing at NASCAR or Camel brand smokes with their marketing campaign in killing Joe Camel as cartoon figure. Censorship takes many forms, so does totalitarianism that advocates censorship. Q: Why cant individuals drink or taste beer in American television commercials? Soon anti-punk rockers may ban bill board postings & handout flyers for band gigs and arrest band members...

  • defaceing something illeagly posted on a wall is not illegal

  • @08smacvicar

Hmm…Neither is beating your spouse in hospitalizing, in catching him/her red-handed between the sheets with their lover, after all, spouses was knowingly, willfully and intentionally operating illegally under Marriage License. In other words, one illegal act is permissible to perform another, tell that to a Judge.

  • I prefer the ads to the white space,actually...

  • Criminalised for fighting back at criminals? I thought you guys across the pond have the right to self defense? Those ads were a visual assault!

    Keep fighting the good fight.

  • @comesoutinthewash

This video is actually about Censorship and those who take the law into their own hands… PS, it’s nice to see Harry get married and it’s also fantastic that his Grandmother was alive to see it, and be part of it… That’s what Grandmothers’ live for, not forgetting to mention great grandchildren too…

  • @johnnybagofdonets Yes, they're good friends of mine, i'm really happy for them, was a beautiful day.

  • the idea is so good!!

  • Absolutely inspirational. Thanks for posting. Keep up the fight!

  • wtf? 0:09 don't kill this depeche mode ad...

  • @Panostechdeck haha lol

  • awesome

  • you know, you guys are assholes. this is what gentrification brings to nyc. I love the ad's, the colorful displays of what's new and going on."illegal"?, you guys are painting on property that isn't your's, isn't that vandalism? what's wrong with putting a message on an otherwise dirty, shitty wall? It's always these so called "cultured" types trying to suburbanize NYC. Why not paint over the over priced condo's kicking the real ny'ers out? This is not coll, fuck you an get out of MY CITY!!!!!!

  • you totally missed the point dude. When artists write on property that they dont own its vandalism, but when big business illegally advertises we all have to bend over and say give me some more? The visual pollution created by mass advertising is offensive to me and apparently in these cases, its illegal too. Id rather see some art instead of being force fed garbage by souless capitalism all day.

  • That's amazing! These adverts really get on my nerves too...and the art's prettier than just straight defacement.

But what's an ACD? Is it like the US equivalent of an ASBO?

  • @jeanpiaget007 Sorry to see your post has been partially censored via Morality Police. (In mordacity as disgruntled to your post), as I previously posted, censorship take many forms, and it’s sad to see you victimized by the blogosphere censors’ after rendering your opinion. Yes, whitewashing crusade is questionable so is painting artwork after whitewashing task was completed as appearance of impropriety. Speculate that book burning bon-fires is next via disgruntled of oppositional opinion.

  • @johnnybagofdonets

I must have been blacked out when I wrote that, but rewatching the video and reading through your posts has helped me think through these types of strategies-- you're astute in pointing out their limitations, while I was more cynical in criticizing their conditions of possibility. Thanks for attempting dialogue rather than giving a thumbs up or thumbs down. . . the logic of American democracy (yes or no, right or left, up or down, all or nothing) taken to its apathetic end.

  • thanks for posting this video as a response to "repainting the bike lanes". your project is amazing.

  • If i want to buy something i will buy it for what it is used for not because it is posted all over the world. I get turned off products when they are pushed into my face. Art work is much more important then adds

  • Long live free speech!

  • This is a fantastic use of talent.

    Hooray for you!

  • I've discovered something AMAZING!

  • That " DELETE " Button was by far the coolest !

  • interesting way to retaliate

  • I guess by painting over billboards, now matter how illegal they are, is an act of vandalism or another form of illegal advertising.

    Nice vid, however :)

  • TWAT.. The idea here is not so much that these AD spaces are illegal, but that AD spaces are eye-sores, and replaced by artistic content they become the opposite. In the end it's easier to go after spaces used illegally, rather than the big CC boards used legally of course.

But then of course there still is a problem with the fact that these spaces are being used illegally. So you could fact with legal action against those spaces, or just simply use your energy covering them with ART.

    TWAT.

  • @obonin Agree 100%

  • the only difference is that NPA pays rent to the landlords and they own the premises.. what will you guys do when NPA forces their landlords to sue.

  • The most intense thing I've ever done in my entire life was go to war.

  • @davmor63 Ur a vet? Awesome. I respect u guys and gals

  • False. "cool ads" < actual art. Next.

  • @metalic699

Sad to see you victimized by blogosphere censors, though good opinion .....

Before every opinion or belief that someone will hold, there will be another party that will strongly oppose while blinded to the obvious.Currently, Craig's List in the USA has been victimized by censors, known as the Morality Police regarding their Adult web page listings, setting precedent to restrict Free Press.

  • nice

  • solid, inspiring, real

  • Amazing

  • a friend of mine used to make public seating in NYC (as places to rest are a scarce commodity in most american cities) and would have them taken down almost immediately by NYPD. That was, until she added fake advertising on them. The NYPD left up any with the ads for months.

it's an incredibly frustrating world we live in

  • -.-'

  • Arrested for painting over illegal signs?

  • Yes, 2 wrongs don't make it right??

  • hahaha tnks 4 the mad wall so i cant go bombing

  • This is great. I've lived in NYC all of my life and I HATE being advertised to everywhere I am. Are y'all going to keep doing this? How do I get involved?

  • @bonillaam Want to get involved in censorship, first try climbing up the mega-towering billboards on both sides of the LIE, aka, Interstate 495, on the Queens side of the Midtown Tunnel with a paint brush, if you hate being advertized too. Not forgetting while at the gas pump with CCTV affixed at top (as captive audience). You’re better off putting a viable effort in stopping telemarketers that invade people's households at worst possible moments or who disrupts their business landline[s] .

  • bravo.

  • Why would they get arrested? And I'm sure nothings happens to the company that originally posted the ads.

  • @wallacs2

Because they were altering and tampering with something they had no rights to touch…. Two wrongs don’t make a right… It’s not about the companies that do the advertising; it’s about the whitewashers’ acts, in appearance of vandalizing, which many may construe as different.

  • @johnnybagofdonets So both things were illegal? why were none of the companies informed or pay any retribution/ jail time?

  • @Ratm4life Apparently, no damaged party or complaint witness came forward regarding private property matter to proceed with legal action via posting sign or whitewashing same, as deadlock/Catch 22. Illegal signs is classified as Furniture via NYC DOT on ‘Public Property’ i.e., street lamps & highway fencing and one type of action that can be sought is for civil penalty via ECB, Environmental Control Board aka, NYC Dept. of Taxation & Finance for punitive & restitution for sign removal fees.

  • i love the delete button <3 what a great idea

  • haha man, girls are as horny as guys. I know I am

  • covering a depeche mode advert. not cool

  • If only the band itself could be eliminated that easily

  • IMHO those works were pretty lame, a well executed throwie woulda looked waaaay better. Chill concept though.

  • Siiiick

  • this is great! keep it up!

  • That was awesome!

  • I just want to know one thing, did "Deeq-Fore" get a wall?

  • awesome dude keep the work up!

  • this is awesome!! :D way to gooo!!!

  • this makes me appreciate not ever having to look at wall after wall of endless advertising , that's found in the bigger metro areas . I'd much rather see the trees & the slouds & the stars . I kinda have the 'Green Acres ' theme song just running thru my head , now ! LOL !

  • I love and support this... good job and keep it up!

I kind of get why there were arrests but then i dont get it?

  • cool
