The nature of a city like NY is that it's.....well.....a city. This necessarily includes activities and dynamics that are illegal, distasteful, moronic, ill planned and aesthetically not homogenous. Billboard posting and flyer pasting without permit is almost as old as printing itself. 19th century New York City was notorious for this practice no less than today. Circus & show posters anyone? Yes, in the stealth of night like today. So much for those fools who claim a "more innocent time."
It was cool to whitewash the advertising, but then you turn around and commit the same crime of trashing the landscape with your 'art'. You are just as guilty as the advertisers. Not everybody wants to see the 'art' you have posted. Can't you see that you are doing the EXACT SAME THING as the advertisers? Did you have city permits to post your 'art'? I seriously doubt it. You should go back and whitewash all of the 'art' that you posted illegally. It wasn't about eliminating the advertising.
@mileyondisney I hear you on street art being as obnoxious as a billboard in the sense that pedestrians are forced to look at it. The difference lies within the intention; street art's purpose is to beautify the city, a billboard wants to sell you bullshit. Which would you rather see?
@mileyondisney your missing the point that its public space for normal people like you and I, not for some big corporation to through advertisement in your face illegally at that, the corporations did it and no one said anything but the public can't do the same?
Hmm... freeze frame 1;42 of video... What side of Williamsburg is this? The Northside or the Controversial Southside that averted bicycle path down Bedford Avenue? Yea, Williamsburg ran by Colonialists' in making their Colony off limits as public space to bicycle traffic. Can't go Green down Bedford avenue nor being scantily-clad via not breaking any obscenity laws. Thanks Mayor (Mad Mike) Bloomberg who did enough damage to small business by inflicting wrath. NYC a Gulag State under Bloomberg.
Plain and simple…apparently there was no crime committed against the City of New York. NYC has Five State Counties, New York, aka Manhattan, Kings aka Brooklyn, Richmond aka, Staten Island, Queens as home of the NY Mets and the Bronx as home of the World Famous NY Yankees. Go Bronx Bombers 2011… and a famous Bronx's cheer to all who oppose…
Currently in NYC, purchasers of counterfeit aka, knock-off goods may face arrested if NYC Councilwoman Margret Chin’s Bill is passed…Soon your tween-ager may be arrested for her pocketbook, shoes or knockoff baseball cap… Google: NY Daily News, Councilwoman Margret Chin’s bid to criminalize buying counterfeit goods. Why in NYC you can’t dial in on a public payphone?
@00sophie Hope you teach your students about censorship and the mindset of those who advocate, not forgetting book burning and ramifying consequence via public outcry and mass hystera to Instigate false accusations, which is essentially similar though not necessarily identical to the victims of the Salem Witch Burnings.
Plain & simple, If I was a permit holder of construction fence/barricade and ‘MY Fence/Property’ was altered via anyone tampering with it, in usage of tools aka, paint brushes or rollers, and public got hurt after the fact of tampering, via any reason, I will bring all the whitewashers as individuals into a law-suite as co-defendants, in adhesion for tampering with something they had no rights to touch, which wont be frivolous litigation and my lawyers will earn their money.
The question is, these billboard postings are on private property, if property owner consents or permit holder for construction fence deems ok, then it’s not illegal. These are not metal signs fastened by mechanical means, though as wall paper having no potential of public safety issues regarding stability i.e. weather related fatigue. What’s the difference if signs are wall papered or individually hand painted? Soon people won’t be allowed to advertize on their trucks that are in public space.
Wish we had some people like these guys in Portland to cover up the graffiti here with some good art. It's not like there's any shortage of good artists in Portland.
these two cities in Mexico, Mexico City & Monterrey is full of these illegal advertising. this type of ideas should be implemented as well in my corrupt country
Wow....Only in NYC… If this happened in another municipality such as Small Towns and Villages (Kangaroo Courts) where Lay Justices [non-lawyer judges] preside, outcome may have been different. Good thing the Criminal Judges in NYC are Lawyers and are not part time Judges that are full time Truck drivers or landscapers with only credentials of having is a High School diploma, further good thing Lay Justices can’t wear the Black Satin Cap, though they can sentence up-too a two year jail period.
@johnnybagofdonets So these companies put there ads up illegally? How can I check if they do that in Chicago which im sure they do. So i can paint them over
@Ratm4life Hmm…as Devils Advocate, Why paint them over? seems like you’re advocating censorship in going on white washing campaign. Soon whitewashers may go after individuals and their yard sale signs affixed to utility poles or the little kid with a lemonade stand sign on the corner. Is the First Amendment truly safe? Maybe metal heads will get arrested for noise pollution when someone complains about their boom-box being to loud while sitting on a park bench.
@johnnybagofdonets Well from the videos info what I thought was companies illegally put there shit up w/o a warrant. There using the public space. If I do that or ARTISTS do that. We will probably getting arrested. And no I believe i the 1st amendment as much as the next bloke. And I would never want to close a lil girls lemonade stand! What kind of monster do u think I am!? lol =]
@Ratm4life You’re no monster, though I revere as someone with intellect. I’m a spin doctor in many forums. Q: How could something affixed on private property is declared as public space? Public space in one format is a recreational area having seating accommodations inside buildings property line accessible to general public as variance or tax break . Q: Is something inoffensive via obscenity standards, in plain sight on private property is declared public space, if seen from public property?
Thought Police are everywhere. Look what happened to cigarette companies such as Winston as censored in advertizing at NASCAR or Camel brand smokes with their marketing campaign in killing Joe Camel as cartoon figure. Censorship takes many forms, so does totalitarianism that advocates censorship. Q: Why cant individuals drink or taste beer in American television commercials? Soon anti-punk rockers may ban bill board postings & handout flyers for band gigs and arrest band members...
Hmm…Neither is beating your spouse in hospitalizing, in catching him/her red-handed between the sheets with their lover, after all, spouses was knowingly, willfully and intentionally operating illegally under Marriage License.
