is the g-string tuned down a half-step to f# ,if so why? any suggestions for right-hand fingering for the cadential part startig with the g-chord would be kindly welcome.
@poupee58 this is actually supposed to sound like a harp , and it does. the full name is FANTASIA QUE CONTRAHAZE EL HARPA EN LA MANERA DE LUDOVICO. and it was originally composed for vihuela. i can't hear any choppy staccato, what i can hear is david russell making his guitar sing like a vihuela imitating a harp. which wouldn't be the easiest thing to do. you think this is a poor performance? let's hear you do it better. i'll be glad to tell you you were right.
@spruceorcedar noo no no...fuck YOU spruceorcedar asshole!!! poupee58 is totally RIGHT in what he says!! what a bunch of fucking morons you and dondorward2010 are...
@poupee58 funnily enough, Mudarra himself did not finger any of the scales campanella - that was something added by guitarists in transcription for effect. it is not wrong to play it the either way, it is simply an interpretive choice.
His tempo slows down at the middle and last parts. I wonder if that's intentional. Very solid play as usual though, really bright and clear sound with great phrasing.
@gvictim I was about to mention the same thing. Whether intentional or not, it does not fit at all. Check out Julian Bream's playing, that is the way it is supposed to be.
Why is it that my favorite pieces performed by my absolute favorite players always end up played with the guitar just a hair out of tune? That is the only possible complaint. still my hero.
@Koto1013 The reason is because standard tuning does not always do the piece justice. The way the 3rd's and 5th's were tuned in the renaissance period really affect the music of the period. You should try it sometime, you will find you have to make the 3rd string "out of tune" in order to get a truly beautiful sound on the guitar. (at least with a capo anyway!)
@RandomMocker I think the tuning issues Koto1013 is talking about are the bottom two strings, especially the E string. As an aside though, I disagree with the phrase "out of tune". I consider equal temperament out of tune, not the narrower major thirds of meantone or just temperament.
This beautiful tune reminds me of Yann Tiersen; great modulation throuout different harmonies with economical but powerful use of short melodical phrases, great!
very beautiful!! wow!!!! i lack words to describe it! david plays it with the right old english, scottish aire! the color of his warm tone painted a picture in my head and when the piece expounded soon enough i was in reverie in the 16th century! thinking about green meadows and castles
Funny but, when I hear this selection, I think of Castilla-León and Castilla-La Mancha and their landscapes which are very different from that of the British Isles.
Excellent playing! The tone of the guitar is very nice for this piece too. I love this piece and play it myself, but not quite as well! I will use your posting to improve on it - thanks!
I know that theres is aversion of this piece with the G string dropped to F#, but im learning a version with standard tuning and without a capo.... there seems to be differents way to do it. Also this piece is suposed to immitate a harp player who was out of tune. David plays it different but he sounds awesome.
G in F# and capo are just to immitate the lute sound, the capo can be used in 2th and 3th fret. but is hard to play without G in F# (i play it without capo).
ive got a question when you play it on my transcription the fingering says to play the end bass note of the chords with the i the p but it looks the he's just playing it the two bass notes with p what do you do?
I think if God ever presented himself as a musician this would be it. If you're wondering about his use of time, then you don't know his concept of virtuosity (i.e. if it's hard make sound easy and vice versa). His clarity and tone is impeccable to say the least!!!!!!!!!
It was written for vihuela, not lute. I play this fantasia with campanella but actually it shouldn't be played like that if you want to play it in the true, renaissance way.

nevertheless, very clean played..
