I love Star Trek because even with all this technology solving war and hunger they still have to pop joints back in when they pop out. No hypospray for that!
Star Trek has always been very humanist. Instead of avoiding all forms of pain by using nothing short of miraculous technology, like a localized anesthetic that allows a joint to be point in (or teleported?) back into place without any pain, they opted to keep a non-life threatening procedure painful as if future humans respect the human condition enough to not opt out of all forms of pain.
O'brien should just accept his fate and get a rather fetching bionic arm. He could ding it a few times with a wrench if he feels like giving himself a darts handicap.
It's not that unheard of, man..my shoulder the way it dislocates it's self...I'd be in Bashir's sick bay almost daily getting him to put it back in. Thankfully I've just managed to figure out how to do it my self.
u know what i dont get about chef o'brien is why on ds9 they still call him chef for cuz officers with the title chef r for transporter officers only and obrien isnt a transporter chef anymore.
Too Funny......I know from experience how nasty a dislocated shoulder can feel! I was born with ligaments too long, and my shoulders used to dislocate on me all the time! Sometimes from things as simple as in the scene where O'brian gets handed a drink and it pops out. So far (knock on wood) I've never had to go to the hospital, as I've always been able to pop it back in myself. A couple of time I've almost went....the longest its gone with me not being able to pop it backs been 'bout 20 mins
what I want to know is how Sloan, Mr. Head-of-Section-31, who can find out the most best kept secrets of the ROmulans, doesn't know about O'Brian's arm problem. Seriously, how had can it be to look at the person's medical file?
Actually this makes sense. O'Brien dislocated his shoulder just before Bashir finished his shift and went to bed. Sloan only gave him one hour of sleep before throwing him into the simulation (which no doubt had to be prepared beforehand).
It's even possible that Bashir never even reported O'Brien's injury by the time Sloan got to him.
Yeah, but it's not like this is the first time O'Brien's dislocated his shoulder, is it? they should have checked to be sure everything was up to date as Bashir knew it, because if, going by the "it's just happened excuse," what if it had been something more blatently obvious like Worf shaved his hair or something not life threatening but obviously visable. I mean, true, it might not have been reported but it's still sloppy.
your idea is valid though and highly likely under the cicumstances
I think O'Brien and Bashir might have been putting one over on Quark during that darts game when he was "in the zone". They sound just a bit like they're acting and Bashir diagnoses the problem just a LITTLE bit quick. ;)
Never noticed this running gag either. :) It makes sense medically (20th century, of course ;)) and that makes it even cooler for me since Trek science seems to so heavily focus on gobbledygook fiction when it comes to the medical sciences ... I mean, *more so* than it does for physics, materials science, organic chemistry, on and on.
Deep Space Nine is the best.

What i don't understand is how he keeps hurting his shoulder on the holodecks when there are "safetys" installed.

I don't think the holodeck can stop you from jamming your thumb into your eye
so yano it could happen

yeah, safeties are for preventing major injuries (like being shot in the head)

@revillsp The safety's are against bullets, knives, weapons...he probably keeps hitting off the walls of the holodeck. lol!
