Very creative ^^ thank you for your tutorial ! It's not a formal belt but it really helped alot since it's more easy to tie compared to the traditional and formal ones =_=" thank you ^^ i appreciate it !
I loved the tutorial, but the only thing I don't like is. Could you insert little boxes that tell us exactly how to do some of the cutting? And the sewing for that matter? It would make it a lot easier :D
I tried to make this but it looks really messy tied at the back. The width is 5 inches larger than waist (although a bit less once stitched) so it means once tied, the rounded ends cross and it just looks dreadful. Am I doing something wrong? Do you have a picture of how you tied this at the back? Am thinking of making it shorter so the rounded ends just meet, also using interfacing. Any help would be most appreciated and thanks for a great tuorial.
Hey, very nice work, I'll definitely be trying my hand at this. What would you recommend as a good fabric? I've heard of various fabrics being used in Obi but I'm not sure if silk would be stiff enough for what I have in mind. Though perhaps I could underlay it with something similar to sail canvas. I'm a kick boxer and whenever I go anywhere with friends I somehow end up giving demonstrations so I need something a little more practical than pretty. Though Pretty is always appreciated. ;D
thx u so much u just saved my club!! i am hold a japanese festival for students in our clubroom and were makin kimonos to wear as waitresses! we were freaking out how to make a simple kimono! So i watch your video and it helped out alot!!! we only have tonite to make the obis but at least we finally kno what were doin!!!!
THANKYOU SO MUCH!
I will put a video up of our kimonos and send it to you so u can see!
I have a kimono but i some how lost my obi this video helped a lot but i was wondering what the back looked like just in terms of tying and such any way have a nice day
I love how simple this is to construct and the clean look.
Can you post a back photo while wearing the obi to show what it looks like tied?
I would add interfacing in between the layers to add stiffness to the belt (helps to prevent rolling while sitting).
To make this reversible, the ribbon would have to be pinned at the ends of the obi in between the layers (stuffed inside when surging), then turned out before topstitching.
@lylithrose just wondering how i would be able to get the ribbons out once they are stuffed inside. would it i need to make a slit in the stitching to pull them through?
Thanks for your comment. I was just wondering ... are you japanese ? How close do you think I am to the traditional obi belt ?
I love the kimono, but I can't afford it. So I'm making one right now, but I don't have a real idea of the construction process. Maybe you can help me out ... Thanks
@MsIselle aah... gommene im not japanese ^__^ parents are actually pakistani so i am asian although born in UK
i made the Obi belt and it was REALLY kawaii~~~ it was light blue with purple flowers ^^
ano.. i really love kimono's too but i havnt seen any sold in UK otherwise i havnt looked enough ): i cant give an answer on how close u are to the belt but i think its great ^^ (im only 15... maybe ill experience more later on)
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! You are the only one with a proper obi tutorial! Definitely making this. The way you did it also makes it possible to be reversible.
it has to be longer than the belt, and enough to make the bow.... just wrap it around your waist and tie a bow ... I don't post measurements because everyone's is different

Btw, its easier to iron down the ends before you sew. Its easier to sew and lays easier in the end.

I like the double wrapped ribbon look the best.
Great Job!

@PLAN3TCOCO this is not a proper Obi tutorial. This is an inspired one. A proper Obi is much more complicated than this.
