  • It's such a dream to roam the city of rome at night. To bath in la Fontana di Trevi, I'm more impressed that it's so quiet. It's so private and romantic yet in public. I doubt we could ever experience that type of a moment nowadays with rome being so busy every hour. Neverytheless it's truly beyond words to describe the feeling i get from watching this moment. Complex yet adventurous, i wish i could live like this and forget about lifes common miseries.

  • That kitten is so adorable.

  • @Jezzinator85 That's why I said it was probably more affecting at the time it was made. Yes, in 1960 it was a game-changer of a film. I'm not arguing its influence on pop culture, because I know it had a large impact. But I don't think it holds up today because the issues it discusses are commonplace now. Plus, I don't think it works very well as a film.

These are simply my opinions. If you like the film, I respect your opinion and I don't think you're wrong in thinking what you think.

  • This movie is maybe one of the most overrated ever made. Who needs a three-hour film to tell them that the celebrity lifestyle isn't that great? The film says nothing we don't get hammered into us at magazine racks on a daily basis. Yes, the film is well-shot and has some great imagery, and was probably more affecting at the time it was made. Yes, I'm all for a three-hour film. Yes, I'm all for a portrait of a culture if it's done right. This film is just too pretentious and it says nothing new.

  • @Guigley Celebrity magazines? Nothing new? Your flat out missing the context. Imagine watching this in 1960, before all those distractions. This changed everything. International film, fashion, pop art, bohemian movements. Even if you want to ignore the content of the film, from an aesthetic point of view it changed everything. This was pop culture. Bob Dylan said so, and Im not arguing with his authority.

  • @Guigley well, you make fun of yourself by comparing this movie with today issues, it's just a stupid argument. This is just a masterpiece, it changed the cinema history, as much as movies like "bycicle thieves" (i'm italian lol) or yours "citizen kane"

  • @Guigley You just lost me when you said pretentious, that's the kind of word which removes any credibility from your critique.

  • so htey walk away without the cat? " I was schlepping around Rome at 3 in the morning '

for some fucking milk and you your ADHD takes you into the fountain of trevino...

  • ETERNAS IMAGENES.

  • This was in lost in translation :)

  • I like this movie very much, but I always found this sequence to be a little stupid.

Anita Ekberg's character is presented as a sort of child-woman, yet is meant to represent all that is beautiful and desirable in womanhood?

    No.

  • @terratrema I know what you mean - but is she meant to present all that is beautiful and desirable in womanhood? Where does that leave Anouk Aimee's character? I think Ekberg represents a very specific American type of beauty Fellini is pretty ambivalent about. She's a fantasy, as Marcello says at one point 'a doll', and, just like the magical moment in the fountain, has no real substance. Marcello's pursuit of this unrealistic ideal is his downfall. Someone always turns the fountain off.

  • FYI, Marcello gives the kitten milk at 2:19. Silvia leaves the gato at the fountain's edge.

  • What happened with the kitten?

  • Classique

The filme a nice melodrama Alby

  • Still one of the sexiest scenes ever on film. Now you have to fight your way through tourists, but in 1970 you could still walk out into the water.

  • I relate to this in so many dimensions, I cannot even begin to tell.. Bravo, I love this magnificent scene. Beautiful, videomaker !!

    ♫♥AnnA♥♫

  • well, i live in Rome right noww, and i'm telling you, that's not a set. that is the REAL fountain. ohh i'm so jealous of her. i would LOVE to do that. personally, i think it's the most beautiful, majestic, romantic part of the city.

  • It's a wonderful film :) I like it.

  • what's the music at the end of this scene. It's not on the Sountrack

  • $450. fine for each person entering the fountain.

  • antia, sensul, speechless, all b.s. those 38dd,s tits and 36 inch thighs is the only thing iwant 2 see.oh. yea topless in the fountian great italian movie

  • Yuck. Who would let a dirty stray kitten on their head? Yes, it's cute, but....

  • @Karosanyo I would do it

  • No amount of viewing will help you get this film. I am beginning to wonder if there is anything to get.

  • When I dove into the fountain I was arrested.

I probably should have been wearing pants.

  • très sensuel !!

  • Beautiful!!! Some 20 years ago I took a plunge in the fountain as in most of the fountains I came across at that time and got arrested. When I told the police that Anita Ekberg was a distant family member (all true) they said that this fountain is only for La Anita to swim in.

  • this scene is beautiful..that leaves me speechless...

  • @robba18

    a zurigo ;)

  • I wish I was young at that time, women were gorgeous without being operated, artificial, siliconboobs etc. The Ekberg woman is something out of this worls...

  • Anita Ekberg = Goddess

  • I wish Fellini made this in 3D.

  • @stargate121 kill yourself! Fellini in 3D, not good!

  • Anita Ekberg was one of the most voluptuous beauties of her time. She's a true Hollywood goddess.

  • how did it get to be morning in 3 seconds??

  • what TRACK on the La Dolce Vita OST has the theme that is playing during the Fountain Scene???

Anybody know, because the whole Soundtrack is on YouTube but I can't find it?

    Love, Nino Rota.

  • @siijal The sweet life.

  • Wow...that dress is beautiful.

  • Storico.

  • The cat is adorable. And Anita Ekberg...wow. She is great here.

  • my favourite scene in a movie along with the jackrabbit slim's twist contest.

  • This scene is completely magical - something many films are lacking today.

Mitico!

    Best movies scenes!

    Trevi Fontana, scene is beautiful!

    Maga-lee

  • Otan th synantas anatrixiazeis.Sth fontana anaferomai!

  • Fellini gave away all his points (percentage of box office earnings) in order to get the producers to build Via Veneto and a Fontana di Trevi at Cinecitta.

This film was the most expensive Italian film when it was relased. Something like 450 million Lira. I think it pulled in 4.5 billion Lira in Italy alone. So pretty good deal for the producers, and Fellini got what he wanted.

  • ITS THE GREATEST FILM EVER... in THE MOST ARTISTIC PLACE in the world

  • @daddaxs Wait, this movie was filmed in Birmingham?

  • @daddaxs 8 1/2 is better but this scene is great

  • solo Roma può offrire questo sogno..

  • that's the dream...

  • my god, of course its the real fontana di trevi, and not a studio.. its immpossible to rebuilt something so amazing...the sad thing is, this place is so damn full of tourist, that u can never go swimming in there, and when u do , the police comes, and they make u pay A LOT !

  • well, thankfully in the 80s, kids like me growing up there managed to do just that. Prior to mas tourism, at night, like 3AM, Rome could be that solitary and deserted. yet, you never felt in danger or scared by the fact nobody was around. I did swim in it many times and yes, I almost got arrested twice, but we also knew how to run in the dark streets nearby. My cousin still lives in an apartment with windows right on the fountain.

  • @fabsternyc Wow .. that's amazing .. you so lucky ..

  • They shot some scenes in the real fountain of Trevi and some in studio. Italian craftsmen are so good that they can make it look like the real thing!

  • @JulieGanee the entire city of Rome is full of fucking tourists...what else the fuck is it useful anyway. It seems like that's majority of the economy of this shit hole.

  • @siliconsurf they do come from everywhere. and still, how can we blame them? it's like a legend. if i could i'd be there all the time.

  • She lived in my hometown before she came to Hollywood!

I liv on the same street now as she did before she got famous!

  • Yes it's for real, let me guess, google is such a hard engine to use.

  • lol some people are just lazy

  • well some people may miss interpret your laziness for something else.

  • Oh, yeah! It's called Trevi Fountain, and it's in Rome.

But in this scene it's reconstructed in a Cinecittà studio, as every set of a movie by Fellini ;)

  • No, that is the real fountain

  • No..è stata girata nella Fontana davvero, nessuna ricostruzione.

    Buona giornata.

  • @ahmadaz96001 Of course it's real, it's the Trevi fountain in Rome!

  • What happens to the cat?

  • yes, that's what i want to know too

  • Questa scena è pazzesca....Fantastica Anita..

  • most beautiful fontana in the whole world

  • Can anyone tell me why the woman is randomly inserting some English words and phrases into her Italian?

  • Sylvia is an American actress visiting Rome.

  • well, you should definately watch the movie.

  • ive only seen this movies once and didn't really get it do you think it needs a second veiwing to fully apreciate it?

  • yes. but 8.5 is better

  • @carbine125 Like many i have seen the film only once, the director wants to

    say something else.

  • One simple question: what made this scene so memorable that it is now mentioned by all directors?

  • Trevi Fountain is a symbol of the wellspring of the flowing beauty and mystery of life itself. Sylvia has an affinity with the fountain, she is like water, like life- her hair even looks like the flowing water. When Sylvia calls to Marcello, she is calling him to life. He asks her who she is (what is life?) and in her silence she reveals the mystery as she "annoints" him, blessing him with the magic of life and asks him to just listen, to receive the beauty of the moment. Symbols have power.

  • Very good explanation. I feel so ashamed that I, an Italian, couldn't tell nor see this deep meaning. I bet others of me patriots can't now distinguish garbage movies from masterpieces such as this.

  • @greenmanlv

    what beautiful words

    love bunyipgirl

  • @greenmanlv

    corny, sorry

  • @greenmanlv You wrote beautifully about symbols. I spend my time doing so about movies. Do you like vertigo by Hitchcock?

  • @greenmanlv Bravo!

  • @greenmanlv That actually makes a lot of sense in the final scene where he's just consumed by emptiness and can't "listen" to the call of life anymore.

  • @greenmanlv You are a fucking geniuos!!! :D

  • @greenmanlv this scene is beautiful that leaves me speechless...

  • @greenmanlv Hey, it's only a movie. It's all baloney, no matter what you call it or how your slice it. :)

  • fellini,dude

  • one of the greatest movie scene ever, amazing

  • wonderful anita get well soon

  • ... you get yourself wet and lost man. Nice thou. See ya lovers!

  • Morale... choose wisely what you wish with a woman, you might get it.

  • Possis nihil Urbe Roma visere maius

  • For the crazy life, Montreal can match all in the world since there is always a great festival going on. It also has 40 museums and the second largest number of bars in North America. The best place to eat in America as well. All of that at an affordable price.

I like Roma as well, and Paris, and Prague and Istambul. All those cities which have a sense of living.

However, Fellini's movie shows our world just like it is and this movie is still true today.

    LHR

  • so beautiful. i prefer this movie way over amarcord

  • Incredible film.. Incredible film.... this is the kind of movie that makes you feel great that these kind of movies were made... There are no films like this any longer. I will definitely buy this to add to my collection.

  • Fellini era un mito!!!!

  • Roma Caput Mundi.

  • Only Roma can rival Roma !

  • and thieves

  • Classic!

  • roma and barcelona..the most beatiful cities in the world

  • Ah! Roma, only Lisboa can rival Roma!

  • I cant believe how quiet it is. When i went to the fountain area (yes i was tempted to jump in and recreate the scene) on holiday it was completeley packed with people.

  • I was there too few weeks ago:) I agree It's beautiful!!!!

  • i love Roma !!, I was there a few weeks ago.

  • I <3 this movie

  • Te amo Marcelo ! ! !

  • Cuanta Belleza!!! ella, el ,el lugar y el gatito suertudo.

  • I really want to visit Rome, it seems so beautful. Anita lives in Italy nowadays, but a few days ago she was taken to a hospital somewhere in Sweden (I think). But she's okay now. It was in the newspapers yesterday... Btw, I'm Swedish like her! :D

  • Anita Ekberg was one of the great stunning beauties of cinema. She was like a Viking goddess. I hope she's had a long and happy retirement from film. A great actress.

  • if you like it just because it's an art movie and you don't understand it, please don't comment.

  • Where did she put the cat?

  • yeah, I was thinking the same! where did she put it? aww it was the cutest kitty ever!

  • glamourous and sexy!

  • I've been to Rome. It's filled with stray cats now. I don't know about back then though.
