how many guys would be interested just in being able to play this or that song...let them learn that way...maybe in the future they will want a deeper knowledge
I am 38, I played for 28 years, formally trained classical guitar player, but I studied flamenco, jazz, rock and so on, with seminars with some cool guys like Frank Gambale and Tommy Emmanuel.
This guitar is two things:
- a great learning tool for the mechanical part of guitar learning (coordination, memorizing patterns, scales...), nothing more than that, but that's already a big help
- a great tool for someone not interested in learnng music and so on, but just in playing!
Nice demo. The Fretlight seems useful for learning complex scales. I use books, the web, etc., but sometimes there is a disconnect between my guitar and the page. Especially when trying to learn a new complicated scale. Having the guitar light up and show the way seems like another great tool in one's arsenal. I don't understand why people say this is a terrible idea because you have to really learn guitar by ear. Lights will never assist in great playing, but they're not supposed to!
From let's say 14 years of experience (being 18) and a few years' teaching and tutoring experience I would say that everyone learns in a different way. You could perhaps group it into for example the maths-like skills to read music, the aural skills to listen, or just the hard work and hands-on practise etc of a different kind of student. Personally I wouldn't have one of these at this stage in my playing, but if it helps others learn in their own style, that can only ever be a good thing!
i have a question, is it easy to memorize these scales, chords, licks, runs.. etc???? i feel like if i were to get one i would just play the red dots and run through it.. but i wouldnt be able to memorize it...
it wont improve your skills because that will take a lot of pratice but it definately improve your fretboard knowledge when u want improvise in keys..better than going buy a scale book at store..this saves time..
ok so i've been playing guitar for 6 years and i want to learn more scales but don't want the hassle of reading the tabs. would this help me? because i know where the frets are so it wouldn't be like i'd get lost if you gave me a real guitar because i have all the frets memorized. just not the scales.
I don't think the dots will help with learning. Imagine this, you give the guitar to someone who has very little knowledge about scales and music in general to make him practice. He could become as fast as petrucci or malmsteen or any other guitarrist, but if you give him a "normal" guitar, he would be kinda lost.
I don't think you can play all over the neck because of the dots. I think your experienced, and for the expressions in your face you really fell when you play.
I think the guitar its a really good learning tool. ;)
Why are there so many haters posting comment on here? First off he says its a "learning tool" a few times throughout the video. Second, you dont have to know how to read all kinds of music sheets to play the guitar. If you are going to post a comment on how stupid you think this guitar is please dont use phrases like "most easiest" it makes you sound like an idiot. Also stop trying to make yourselves sound like amazing guitar teachers....if you are so awesome why are you watching his videos?
im an accoustic player but for somereason i love watching U :D UR so greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat teacher :D even i wont play electric anytime soon :D
You are my guitar sage, but this seems just wrong. There's something to be said about making mistakes, sounds and tones will teach you more than learning, video game style, how to touch a series of red dots. Watching your expressions, your bends, your "feel", no way a bunch of red dots can substitute for that. Learn by ear!
@cladouce Agreed that the dots do not give you feel. But they are a helpful learning tool. But just like my vids, they only show you kind of what to do. YOU have to make it come to life. Whether it's dots on a fretboard, dots on a page or paint on a palette, these things are only tools. WE must make them come to life. Thank you for the kind comments. I appreciate your opinion too.
@cladouce With Guitar Tab Pro 6 and the Fretlight addition, you can download any tab, any song, and learn how to play it incredibly fast. If you are able to hit the lights at the right time, with the correct strike, whether that would be a vibrato or a hammer on or pulloff, you learn how to play the song perfectly.
Just like any sheet music, if you play the note at the right time with the correct strike, you play the song correctly. This TOOL just makes learning how to play much, much faster.
@cladouce People should realize NOT all brains are the same. Many people learn differently then others. This is strictly information. Why be afraid of info. I cant watch somebody play a guitar and relate it to MY hands, charts also confuse me. The info gets jumbled in my head. I CAN follow dots and memorize scales . Same outcome different method. Many dyslexics and others need different tools to learn. Get outside the box. Feel and bends are easy for me. Its the patterns.
@yourguitarsage can you please do a lesson on scales. major, minor, pentatonic. i am currently taking a music theory class and understand how to make scales just confused on how to apply them to the guitar. please respond!
Cool! I'd personally not need this but I see why other people would. Amazing product! I'd like to see that thing go insane and get lights flashing all around while someone shreds like crazy haha
I think I will go ahead and buy your system, but I would pay more if you had chord progressions/chords on the video screen itself. Just makes it easier.
Why is this great? I have never had trouble explaining to a student what frets to use. Technology like this only proves the stereotypes of guitarists: that guitarist can't read music. If a student can read music, this technology is unnecessary. Therefore, if you have to use this technology with your student, you are doing them a great misfortune by not teaching them how to read music. However, I can see this being great with classified students.
@CTrane88 To know it all, one must be master ear player, know the number system by heart and have all of the patterns down. Different people learn in different ways and in fact many of the guitar icons never knew how to read music. I was a classical guitar major so I know how to read music, but hardly EVER use it. Orchestra or pit musicians use it exclusively, but are not the best ear players. Some folks are better with patterns and others with notes. I can appreciate the opinion. Thanks man.
@yourguitarsage In my opinion reading music is the most easiest way to play guitar. Your charts might be very useful for chord progressions and rhythm guitarists, but if you want to play lead guitar with melodies and solos, written music is just the easiest way. And fuck off tabs, an allround guitarist should know every single note on his fretboard! For those it's even unnecessary to use such technology. In my opinion this really might help beginners but u should learn acting without it!
@echostaffel Written music is in my opinion the best way, because it contains everything. But if you don't need every part, you can use other methods as well (e.g. your great charts!). For me it was always important to know what I'm doing while playing guitar. I never wanted to press down a string at a SPECIFIC dot.To sum it up, I think this guitar might really help stundents at the beginning. But it's just a help and doesn't replace practising! Later u should walk alone without crutches! Greets
@echostaffel Many players, especially chart players feel that music notation is a crutch because it tells you exactly what to do and leaves no room for improvisation or one's own emotion, other than what is written. I too like the option of playing in different section of the neck. However, check out what a great studio musician can do with a chart, and many strictly "music notation" readers will be humbled. It's art and there are so many ways to approach it. Again I appreciate the opinion.
@yourguitarsage It's not about when you use it or the fact that there are greats who can't read. It's about having it if you need it, like you or me have. My job as a teacher is to give the student everything he/she needs to know in order to for that student to pursue music further. I hope this technology is used in conjunction with reading because reading isn't a waste if you have it but don't use it.
@yourguitarsage Reading music is a great aid in developing musicality and learning the guitar even if you don't use it. I just don't see that benefit in frets lighting up.
@CTrane88 To be a master musician, one does not need to know how to read music. Most of the greats that have influenced the current generation can't read a lick of music to save their life. Yeah sure, to read music is a good tool to expand on your musical knowledge but it's really not necessary in some instances...
