  • This is a great scene from the movie, but if you're going to post it make sure that it's at the right tempo.

  • this must have been Hell for him to memorize o.o

  • @Echidneys He played it 8 times a week , 50 weeks a year, for almost 3 years (Dec 1957- Jan 1960) on Broadway.

  • "uh ho we got trouble, we're in terrible terrible trouble that game with the 15 numbered balls is the devils tool!"

My favorite lines and execution from Robert Preston!

  • @evitageNtheGreat You are absolutely right, my friend. The best part of the song.

  • @evitageNtheGreat My thoughts exactly. :)

  • and a cooooooooooool head and keeeeeeeeeeeeen eye!! ;)

  • Robert Preston was a great and talented actor. What a salesman.

  • I don't we will see talent like this again....I miss Robert Preston....he was a great show man.

  • This Is A Really Good Musical

  • Words like SWELL!!! Oh my God!!!! :)

  • with a capital b and that rythmes with p and thats stands for pool! wtf?! rofl

  • Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between pool and billiards, and a pool table or billiard table? I thought they were the same thing.

  • I've never played Billiards, but I do know that a Billiards table has no pockets or multi-colored balls. The idea is to just use the cue ball to tap another ball via multi rail shots...i think. I'm only basing this from a single billiards game i saw decades ago.

  • This is the best version of this song ever IMO. It seems like all of the other ones arn't as energetic as this.

  • @Colbynfriends Agreed. Ain't nobody gonna beat Robert Preston. :)

  • Dan Patch, a famous trotting race horse.

Barbara Cook originated the role of Marian on Broadway and her dad was a traveling salesman.

  • they did it at my school, robert preston is the man

  • my middle school is doing this Play I am in the ensemble

  • watchs this in school!!!!!!! i know i did. 2 weeks ago

  • Rarely was an actor born to play a part as Preston was for Harold Hill in The Music Man. I saw the revival on Broadway and Craig Bierko was no Robert Preston. I saw about 30 seconds of Matthew Broderick on TV and it looked as if he was sleepwalking.

  • I absolutely SECOND that.

  • no kidding. he was so bland in comparison. definitely not the same attitude!

  • lol the original CONSERVATIVE! OMG Ragtime and swell! Jeepers we have gotten so CORRUPT with some BAD TROUBLE!!!

  • robert preston is impossible to follow. i love broderick, but no one will ever be able to compare to RP. yes, shirley jones made the music man what it is too... "the idle brain is the devil's playground!" wish i could've done this play

  • broderick was awful preston owns by far

  • I can't say that Broderick was bad... I never could bring myself to watch the remake. I will probably go to my grave without doing so. R. Preston RULES! As well as Shirley Jones and everyone else in the original cast. LOVE IT!

  • Robert Preston and Matthew Broderick are tied for Music Man

  • Broderick damn near ruined the movie IMHO :-/

  • @bluebody99 I second that. And Kristin Chenoweth, for all of her talent, was NO match for Barbara Cook. Just my opinion.

    Happy New Year.

  • outstanding

robert preston is the best by far

  • This is one of my favorite musicals.

  • I was the lighting director for The Music Man about 14 years ago I Absolutely loved this show then and I have seen it about 200 times since.

I can never get sick of this show or it aongs.

Its the quintessential Musical. My show ran for 14 weeks and was always a sell out.

I now live in Florida and I am doing a production of Newsies which is openning in Feb 09.

  • totally

  • my middle school did this play a few years ago..i was in it

  • I want to play Harold Hill in "The Music Man" before I die.

  • I Love This guy:)

    George V. Hill (1931-2007)

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Oh my gosh! What a coincidence! My friend's name is Georgie (Georgina) Hill. Are you guys, by any chance, related?

    swimmingcherry123

  • Harold Hill is a genius. He's quite a clever bloke, distracting everyone all at once. And how can't you love Buddy Hackett as Marcellus?

  • loved this movie ever since I was little!

  • haha, this is awesome!

  • I love it! This is the first rap ever recorded!

  • Awesome!!!

  • my skewl is doin dat play it is awesome =D

  • i also remember this movie from when i was a kid, probably when it first came out in '62 and i was six, it was one of the first movies i remember seeing in a theater, the first i remember seeing was another musical, 'west side story', interesting how the sixties took the hollywood musicals full circle to a final end, with movies of this type (sound of music; bye, bye, birdie; gypsy) to the rock years, monterey pop & woodstock, then the 70's 'tommy' & 'all that jazz".

  • I saw this movie when I was 6 too! only, that was only about 8 years ago, but I loved it so much I watched it a TON!!! I knew all of the songs in it! I rented it from the library only a week ago, and I could sing along with most of the songs still! so addictive!

  • I saw it when I was six as well, but that was longer than eight years ago! Then I had the nerve, even the temerity to see it fully restored with digital sound a few years ago at a Hollywood Blvd theater. The audience including me applauded after every number with tearful eyes.

  • that's awesome!!!! I wish I could see it in a theatre! (I saw it once in a theatre, but it was kids from the ages 8-15 and wasn't good, cuz the person who played prof. hill couldn't act!!!!!)

  • I would have loved that!! I would have had tears in my eyes too!

  • I remember this from my childhood - it was perhaps my favorite movie and it never fails to bring a huge smile to my face whenever I see it. Robert Preston was born to play this role and it will be forever his. Thanks for the wonderful clip.

  • Thank goodness this performance is captured on film for posterity.

  • GENIUS! The perfect marriage of music, lyrics and performer.

  • One of the best songs from this classic musical.

  • Preston: what a fabulous actor!!
