I often hate growling vocals. It's because they usually sound borderline pointless. In addition to being super difficult to understand unless you are really accustomed to them, they sound like the singer was like "hay dudez we got this cool instrumental and i don't feel like coming up with lyrics so RRGRAGFRREEEAAAA"

But Epica does them well. It always compliments the sound and the melody. Never seems like they were just added on for the shits, or because OMG WE'RE SO HARDCORE.

@Ashleymjy Yeah, I like their growls because growling alone throughout an entire song always sounds overdone and pretentious, while their more held back use in Epica's songs is nice because they provide extreme contrast with Simone's vocals. People enjoy contrast; like having dessert after a wonderfully spicy meal.

It may be symphonic metal, but it is also gothic. The gothic community embraces Epica. Unfortunately, many fans of certain artists refuse to accept that the music is also gothic, especially if the artists do not specifically label themselves as such. If it is embraced by the gothic community, it is gothic by extension. The important fact is that Epica, especially the voice of Simone combined with the instrumentals, is powerful, beautiful and capable of carrying the listener to where they intend.

Going by what you said if the gothic community embraced Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor that would make there music gothic. @GothicWarrior94 There songs are not goth. There songs deal with Mayan Philosophy/Legend social issues, and fundamentalism. That is not even close to what you would find in gothic music. Ther elements they throw in are Prog, Death, Black and Symphonic metal again that is not even close to goth. Facade Of Reality is about 9/11 end of story there. It features two fragments from a speech by Tony Blair. "Seif al Din" is about Islamic fundamentalism. So I fail to see the goth.

@Epica124 Sorry but youre alone here. They, as a band, are goth and this is what most people believe and among them, all my friends. Many people consider this type music goth. And by that I mean powerful opera vocals, screams along with a heavy sound and symphonic elements. Maybe we see things from a different point of view but in my book this is goth and in my play list, this and many other songs by them, are listed as "Gothic". Anyway, Epicas songs are epic even if u dont agree theyre goth

A common method amongst symphonic, dare i say 'gothic', metal bands is the chaotic rifts in the chorus which bring out the lyrics. Epica pulled a daring move here, but it turned out well enough that I don't even care how over-done this method is.
