I think as guitarists go (both writing and playing) Frehley had more to offer in originality. As a singer, Sambora's backing vocals are as important to the success and the sound of Bon Jovi as Michael Anthony was to Van Halen.
Ace Frehley is imaginative, soulful, and creatively frames & transforms every song into his own melodic masterpiece.
Listening to Richie Sambora is as exciting as watching paint dry. He is the essence of boring, unemotional, technical player that makes us fall asleep during the song.

Ace plays simpler than Richie, basically many of his solos are based on a pentatonic scale, but it is how he plays them, loud and aggressive, what makes them thrilling and electrifying, just like Iommi or Angus Young do. Richie has lots of awesome solos and is an amazing and really creative guitarist , and more technical than Ace, but since it all boils down to what sounds better, I would go with Ace!!!

Hand skill isn't the only factor that makes a great guitarist; there are many many factors. Ace is the one all these great guitarist like Slash look up too

Hendrix couldn't hold a candle to Nuno Bettencort, Vito Bratta, and a whole boatload of other guitarists from the 80's (and Sambora couldn't hold a candle to them either). So is Vito Bratta "better" than Hendrix? What about Adrian Belew, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp... are those guys "better" than Hendrix and Clapton?

I'll try it from a different angle: I've been playing guitar for over 33 years, and there isn't a single Sambora solo that I can't learn in a very short period of time... but even though Ace is the guy who inspired me to pick up the guitar in the first place, I still can't perfectly duplicate some of his solos.... just like those dudes from the 80's... they were just too damn good for us mortals.

I like KISS and I like Bon Jovi so it's hard to compare them. However, I do believe that it is diffficult to compare Ace and Richie because they do play guitar in different styles. Richie is more blues based whereas Ace is clearly a good old fashioned rock guitar player. So what works for KISS is Ace and what works for Bon Jovi is Richie. Honestly, if I HAD to choose, I'd choose Richie Sambora because I'm a stronger Bon Jovi fan than KISS fan. Sorry to disappoint anyone if you don't agree.

dynasty was a good album, but most of that album wasnt even Ace. it was Bob Kulick playing the studio tracks. Ace may have done the live tour but it wasnt himon the studio album

@sjdss you may be an original fan, good for you. ace and pete from 74 to 78 fit was kiss was about, but..they ran out of ideas, and they stopped growing as musicians and hit the drugs hard. this is why i no longer respect ace or peter. at their prime their ability was simple, basic, but suited kiss' sound. the reunion shows were horrid and pathetic, ace and peter showed and proved how bad they had gotten, and i felt sorry for kiss fans. tommy and eric have brought with them new energy/passion

remember the most successful international albums from kiss WERE NOT original members. the original was big in america, but it was dynasty and other 80's efforts that made kiss big around the world. 79's dynasty i think gave them the first international #1 album and single's. even though popularity was dying in usa, it was growing in other parts. plus this current line up holds highest usa chart position of #2.

Ace was a great guitarist but I think Paul put it in perspective when he said Ace was great but he stayed okay with just being great he didn't grow as a guitar player and didn't grow as a band mate. The work Ritchie did on the solo for "Dead or Alive" was one of the best and most fitting solo's I've heard. I like Ritchie Sambora's playing. However, Ace frehley will always be in a league of his own.

Ace has always been over rated, same as everyone in Kiss. As a band they are great, but individually, none of them is really that good. Ace was a great show, but very low level music.

don't do living on a prayer with that song you dont have a good guitar. kiss was playing fast and it looks difficult. but its harder to find a good rythm like in all the songs from bon jovi. ace frehley plays fast and richie sambora plays good and good rythms. youre supposed to know that kiss was a performing band with lots of stunts. so frehley was always playing fast because that looks difficult.

I think that Ace Frehley is probably one of the greatest guitarists still alive. I think Ritchie is a great songwriter, but his guitar style is different...more blues based. Both are great talents, but Ace is simply the best!
You can hear the influence that Frehley had on Sambora in Samboras playing style. Realize this Bon Jovi when they first hit the scene were taken on by Kiss as an opening act. The sound stages were different as well and remember Frehley was the first to invent chorus distortion no other guitarist played it before him. He was the first to combine the two. Later it would be called digital delay by Peavey.

In 1982 after Criss and Frehley left KISS and before Richie was in Bon Jovi, Richie went to audition for KISS and practically pleaded saying that Ace was a huge inspiration and he would love to play with KISS, he was turned downed, but he still lists Ace as his main inspiration to date. so you cant really say Richie is better when he uses an looks up to Ace

Hendrix couldn't hold a candle to Nuno Bettencort, Vito Bratta, and a whole boatload of other guitarists from the 80's (and Sambora couldn't hold a candle to them either). So is Vito Bratta "better" than Hendrix? What about Adrian Belew, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp... are those guys "better" than Hendrix and Clapton?

@slowhand19 yeah... actually they are better. that wasn't a good argument on my part. OK... I'll try it from a different angle: I've been playing guitar for over 33 years, and there isn't a single Sambora solo that I can't learn in a very short period of time... but even though Ace is the guy who inspired me to pick up the guitar in the first place, I still can't perfectly duplicate some of his solos.... just like those dudes from the 80's... they were just too damn good for us mortals.

I like KISS and I like Bon Jovi so it's hard to compare them. However, I do believe that it is diffficult to compare Ace and Richie because they do play guitar in different styles. Richie is more blues based whereas Ace is clearly a good old fashioned rock guitar player. So what works for KISS is Ace and what works for Bon Jovi is Richie. Honestly, if I HAD to choose, I'd choose Richie Sambora because I'm a stronger Bon Jovi fan than KISS fan. Sorry to disappoint anyone if you don't agree.

dynasty was a good album, but most of that album wasnt even Ace. it was Bob Kulick playing the studio tracks. Ace may have done the live tour but it wasnt himon the studio album

As for Tommy "The Scab" Thayer, the only reason he got the gig in KISS is because Ace didn't want it, and Tommy wasn't doing anything else but fetching coffee for Gene and washing Stanley's car! There is only ONE true lead guitarist for KISS - Ace Frehley, baby!!

@sjdss you may be an original fan, good for you. ace and pete from 74 to 78 fit was kiss was about, but..they ran out of ideas, and they stopped growing as musicians and hit the drugs hard. this is why i no longer respect ace or peter. at their prime their ability was simple, basic, but suited kiss' sound. the reunion shows were horrid and pathetic, ace and peter showed and proved how bad they had gotten, and i felt sorry for kiss fans. tommy and eric have brought with them new energy/passion

@sjdss 80's kiss wasnt terrible, it was just different from 70's kiss.
remember the most successful international albums from kiss WERE NOT original members. the original was big in america, but it was dynasty and other 80's efforts that made kiss big around the world. 79's dynasty i think gave them the first international #1 album and single's. even though popularity was dying in usa, it was growing in other parts. plus this current line up holds highest usa chart position of #2.

Ace was a great guitarist but I think Paul put it in perspective when he said Ace was great but he stayed okay with just being great he didn't grow as a guitar player and didn't grow as a band mate. Ritchie is the better guitarist because he did grow with each of his albums and continues to do it today.

The work Ritchie did on the solo for "Dead or Alive" was one of the best and most fitting solo's I've heard. I like Ritchie Sambora's playing. However, Ace frehley will always be in a league of his own.

don't do living on a prayer with that song you dont have a good guitar. kiss was playing fast and it looks difficult. but its harder to find a good rythm like in all the songs from bon jovi. ace frehley plays fast and richie sambora plays good and good rythms. youre supposed to know that kiss was a performing band with lots of stunts. so frehley was always playing fast because that looks difficult.

I think that Ace Frehley is probably one of the greatest guitarists still alive. I think Ritchie is a great songwriter, but his guitar style is different...more blues based. Both are great talents, but Ace is simply the best!

You can hear the influence that Frehley had on Sambora in Samboras playing style. Realize this Bon Jovi when they first hit the scene were taken on by Kiss as an opening act. The sound stages were different as well and remember Frehley was the first to invent chorus distortion no other guitarist played it before him. He was the first to combine the two. Later it would be called digital delay by Peavey.

Definitely Ace, even Richie would agree. now before i get thumbs downed, Read this. In 1982 after Criss and Frehley left KISS and before Richie was in Bon Jovi, Richie went to audition for KISS and practically pleaded saying that Ace was a huge inspiration and he would love to play with KISS, he was turned downed, but he still lists Ace as his main inspiration to date. so you cant really say Richie is better when he uses an looks up to Ace
