  • Book was boring. Sorry, couldent get into it.

  • The video game was unbelievably fun~ I remember playing it SO much when Iw as younger~

  • Don't flame me for this, but I fell asleep reading the book...

    *Ducks for cover*

    Don't kill me!

  • @nddlj

Yeah when they're kids their animals soul things can change into different animals

  • I liked the movie, but you can tell they were setting up for a sequel that never happened.

  • I was confused as fuuuuck! I didn't even know that the little animal sidekicks were their respected human's souls until I watched this review...

Uhm... could the little girl's ferret animal thing turn into other animals, I swear it wasn't always a ferret?

  • I didn't get what the hell was going on?

  • i remeber when this first came out, and they didnt play it at the theater, because the church seemed to had thought, that the damn story, was about trying to kill god...... WTF? stupid, and it was the bible belt , Oklahoma, so of coarse if it offends christians, its not going to be played

  • i REALLY wanted to watch this film when i first saw the trailer but then i saw transformers and love those iflms now

  • I highly disagree this movie is FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR worse then some old bulls@^t far worse.

  • Bitch slap LMAO!

  • Personally, I thought this movie was good. It was original and unique, and to some degree creative. It may not have been great like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, but for the time being it was fun and entertaining none the less. I'm sure that if sequals were made, this could have been a great trilogy.

  • How is this movie aginst religion in any way? I saw a lot of things that were aginst athority (government, police, rulers) but nothing aginst religion.

P.S. Pan is my favorite! x3

  • @ultimateninjamastah The book is VEHEMENTLY against religion and any kind of Theism, to the point of bitterness. They toned it down for the film.

  • This movie still pisses me off. There was no way to make a good movie out of the narration-centric books.

  • Wow, this was a really simple and direct movie... all the people being utterly confused by it here... your confusion confuses me.

Of course, I thought Inception was pretty simple and direct too but... this one doesn't even make an attempt to be confusing.

  • i still dont understand this movie -_-

  • This movie was more for the people who love odd, confusing, layered plot stories. I love writing scripts and stories like that so this movie was very easy for me to follow, so I enjoyed it. I'd give it a full price.

  • is the black guy supposed to look like sachz from FF13?

  • What the fuck was up with the damn ending? it had no freaking ending those assholes.

  • @Ichigo9913 It was meant to be a trilogy, like the original books.

  • @RealBronzeClaws i'm sure it was but it left me unimpressed that they just stopped it right there with nothing in the plot completed.

  • @Ichigo9913 if only the producers hadnt turned their backs on the project.

  • THE BOOK TRILOGY IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, the movies suck more dick than Edward Cullen. (And thats a lot of dick)

  • One needs to read the book before watching this film, even then its a terrible adaption. :(

  • Its fable for kids...........only that fable is soo much better even though its a video game

  • Bad book, even worse movie.

  • Wow, THIS beat Transformers for Best Visuals? That's really sad.

  • This movie SUCKED. LOW some ol' BS. Boring as shit.

  • It sucked, the book was sooo much better!

  • Is that the guy from ghost rider?

  • It was som old bullshit but I liked it for some reason..

  • fuck this movie

  • ill give it a low matine

  • Nicole Kidman and her ginger monkey!!

also there is one good thing I got out of this movie...popcorn and a coke

  • this movie was shit its in between some ol' bull sh£@$t and a rental. I only lyked nicole kidman cos she looked gorgeous in the film :O

  • SOME OL BULLSHIT!!!!

  • how did this beat transformers for best visual effects i DONT KNOW

  • @Eski4Lyf the worst part is that they actually filmed the end but left it out. If you watch the trailers you can see part of the end

  • I loved the books,I hated the movie.

  • book was great, fucking hated the movie

  • Like the Co-host would say Bulls**t Bulls**t Bulls**t. this is a mechanical carbon copy of Lord of the Rings with a few touches of Narnia and a drop of 007.

Nothing is good besides Sam Elliot or the Polar Bear fight

  • This film is nothing but a metaphor for the big bad evil catholic church. Fuck that shit. Hidden messages by atheists are fucking irritating.

  • @angelmarine1292 hidden messages by theists are awesome, though, huh?

  • I have this DVD only for that Polar Bear fight scene....

A slap so hard it took off a guy jaw lol

  • The film is okay, but the book is much better

  • @SideWaysThinker I noticed a few mistakes from Book-to-Movie, like how even though the Golden Compass is really called an Alethiometer, not a compass.

  • I guess people prefer explosions and action over storyline, go watch your action films, leave fantasy and drama to people who are mentally capable of appreciation of it.

  • I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT TRANSFORMERS LOST IN THE SPECIAL EFFECTS DEPARTMENT TO THIS FILM!! Sorry, that was my response after watching the 2007 oscars.

  • @TF2Fan101They picked a film on showing giant polar bears instead of a film about giant robot beating the shit out of each other?! Those guys need to grow a fucking brain!!

  • if they made all of the movies to the book, it would be so much better ,

  • even though i hated the movie with a passion, i still think it would be a cool perk of having yure sould be able to take the form of an el chupacabras

  • the book was alot less retarded

  • One of the best movies i've ever seen. It is openly Atheistic, meaning that it spits on religion, and as such, a call to reason and thinking, aswell as science. I give it FULL rating, 10/10. I hope there will be a follow-up soon.

  • @ShadowReubenKee I never noticed that. When is it atheistic?

  • @DarkLink9393 Pretty much ALL of the time. :| How did you NOT notice it. :I

You can search it on google. It is an openly atheistic movie.

  • @ShadowReubenKee I guess it's because I was barely paying any attention to it, mainly because I was confused about what was going on most of the time I tried to do so.

  • @ShadowReubenKee lol, is that rating based on how good a film it was? or how its anti-religious? btw, lion witch and the wardrobe was a far better film, and is pro-christian to boot :D

  • If there was another one after this one then id give it a high rating but for now 3/5

  • We never did get that sequel.

  • was really disappointed with this thought it would be more

this goes under some ol bulls*** for me

  • matinee/rental film but the polar bear fight is fucking epic

  • I read the book, but never watched the movie. :\

  • to hell with this awful movie. it is based on a pretty good book, but it takes away EVERYTHING that made the book good because they didn't have the balls to have the religious symbolism that the book was full of, and they cut out the ENTIRE LAST ACT OF THE STORY! seriously, it just cuts off at the 2/3 mark. that is ass. this is the worst book adaptation i have ever seen, plain and simple.

  • WTF, Full price???? Whatever shit you were smoking please, please, please hit me up, because you clearly high of your mind when you said this. Am I the only one who thought this movie was the biggest waste of time, ever? I mean, I might have well have just paid to see the five minute polar bear fight and skipped the rest, and I actually would have been better off

  • Never read those books

So I was forced to watch it 2 times before i understood what was going on

  • The biggest insult is that it won Best Visual Effects at the Oscars beating Transformers!!! Those guys at the Oscar committee are assholes!!!

  • the books were fucking amazing!!!!!

don't see the movie, read the books - trust me, they're not really for kids this movie dumbed down a lot of the intense moments and gore when it should have been made into an adults film like lord of the rings

  • I actually liked Felloship of the Ring more than The Two Towers and about evenly as much as Return of the King.

  • I'm still tryin to figure this movie out. What the crap is DUST and where is Doctor Who to straighten all this out?

  • i only watched this bcos of daniel craig

  • Saw this at the hotel. I got SOOOOOOO fucking bored. I completely stopped paying attention to it after 20 minutes.

  • the americans have gone wrong with a remake of the book the book is AMAZING

but the film they didnt even finish the first film and they havnt done the next ones

and they made it to understandable cus the books are kinda complicated

even though the books are against religion but this is trying to avoid that.

the film if it wasnt of a book 6/10

    with book 3/10

  • haha, i saw this movie on the plane and i fell asleep too, taking of my earplugs. i get bored when i watched this movie. idk why people ,ove stupid embarrassing movie

  • In my opinion i thought the books were amazing and the movie wasn't bad either but they could have done alot better i think they tried to play on other movies successes instead of trying to create there own. And the hole religion debate kinda ruined the chance for them to make it up in the second movie. U'd think the catholic church would have better things to do then criticize a fantasy movie. Thanks to japan and china and europe we might actually get a chance for the sequel........

  • bundaberg rum commercials need more fighting polar bears

  • lol my dad fell asleep when he took me to see this

  • Some ol' BS

  • When I was watching that one polar bear fight scene. I wanted them just to stop and drink some coca-cola and hang out for just 20 minutes.

  • Fuck this.

    Read the book.

Or at least read the book first, so you can think ''Damn, this could have been so much better''

Its like 'Arry Potta with less likable character

  • Yes, listen to this. Read the book. It kicks the movies ass and makes much more sense as more things are explained that really NEEDED to be explained.

  • The only reason this was worth seeing in the theaters: to make sure the damn thing turned a profit so you could see THE NEXT TWO PARTS IN THE TRILOGY. Korey called it -- they tried to cram this huge-ass book into one little movie, and by the time they had finished establishing the setting and the plot, they were out of film.

In fairness, however, the book ended very much the same way: with a cliffhanger, so that shouldn't have been held against them.

  • I give this a Rental... I mean when I saw it on the big screen I just couldn't resist to think that this was a wannabe LOTR movie mixed with Harry Potter, and the tone was abit too childish for me to enjoy it.

    But damn, badass bear fight.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, I thought this movie was SOOO confusing, and disjointed and I was focused on the movie. I would give this a 2/10 becuase of the viisuals. I'm sorry but it was executed badly in my opinion.

  • @MADNINJA2500 didn't see that,though i read the books

  • @MADNINJA2500 you think that the movie was confusing, try reading all three books in the series, if you thought this movie was fucked, your in for a lot more if you do read them all

  • @MADNINJA2500 The movie was butchered by the studio they took out half the plot because they were afraid religous people would boycott the movie because of "ANTI RELIGOUS/CATHOLIC" content..

  • @raymondleeleggs If this is the case then why protest? I consider myself a Protestant Christian and I dislike Catholicism too. I don't see how this movie is anti-Christian though.

  • @studiousx3 In the third book an angel who is masquerading is god is killed, and the author said the books were about killing god, and the novels are written fom an athest point of veiw.

The catholic church and various religous groups boycotted the movie partially resulting in the movie only taking in 70 million at the US box office but over $378 million worldwide, new line cinema went bankrupt because they sold the rights before the domestic gross came in.

  • some 'ol bullshit if u read da book dont see da movie

  • some 'ol bullshit. boring, boring, boring as well as nothing being explained at all...and the girl actress gets on my nerves, though i hate child actors in almost any film.

  • @PaulyCatz82 yah they almost all suck except in the shining....

  • @PaulyCatz82 OMG I hate child actors too I really can't figure out why tho

  • It was way too long and implied on itself too much. If it had tone it down a few notches it would have been better. I'm glad I watched still, but honestly I really wanted to get up and leave in the middle of the movie because of how damn long it was.

So finally when it gets to the end, I'm really into it, it's got my attention, I've waited so long and it's gotten interesting. It ends.

    Literally, the entire theater groaned.

  • Rental.

    Very dissapointed

  • i think da small girl got da role cause she read all the books damn her acting was lame...

  • im sorry i messed up by reading the book first and it ruend the movie for me because they took so much stuff out you mite as well read the srip notes and say thats it.

  • im sorry but this movie confused the sh*t out of me

  • LOVE Sam Elliot!!!

  • I heard that the studio cut away a lot of footage and made it bad. Chris Weitz, the director, talked about a movie that the studio took out and he was not happy with the results. I pretty sure he was talking about this movie

  • Well, there was an original ending which was a cliffhanger that the the studio removed....believing that it would affect little kids badly (i don't want to spoil it, but the theme was "betrayal, sacrificing, and tragedy"); u could see some of the clips in the trailer that was never in the movie and other things. However, that ending that got removed will (hopefully) be in the future sequel.....if they were to make one that is ^^

  • I haven't finished reading the book but they have cut too much out that will leave those who haven't read the book very confused. I know they wanted to avoid controversy but they shouldn't of removed the religious elements from the film.

  • The entire series is an epic critique of organized religion yes, but there was basically none of that in the movie. Would have been much better if they left it in. Watering down the message for dumbass american viewers who would never like it anyway.

  • @brittlebrit187

Hm, I have not read the books, but religious elements was always part of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia book series, which was only somewhat shown in the movies.

Nice how you call American viewers dumbasses. Heh, anyway can be as dumb, but obviously you must be implying how American education is slower so... I surprisingly agree with you. Man I wish I were German...

    ~|K|~

  • PS! The other thing i liked was Eva Green being in this movie, she hot as hell ;9

  • The only things i liked were the fight scene between Yorek and Ragnar, and Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman is hot and good to play a bitch, and Yorek was badass xD But the children's acting was lame, especially the main character

  • I loved the film and it made me want to read the book after. But for the people who didn't enjoy it, i guess this type of movie in general just aint your thing

  • This movie was so boring...

  • People, it's movies like this that you need to read the book in order to understand, and get the real message. I'll say first, The Golden Compass was WAY better than Eragon. Fox completely messed up Eragon in so many ways...I disowned it. Yes, the book is anti-religious, it's a book basically about killing the christian god.

The movie may have seemed weird to some, but that's where the laziness needs to end.

SINCE, I read the entire series AND spinoffs, I, and many others' know what's going on.

  • what do the lyrics at the begining say?:S

  • The movies about to start I'll tell you how it is :)

  • polar bears eating kids? nasty thought. good thang those guys aren't school teachers.

  • This movie is really weird. I can't really explain it, but some parts just felt forced to me. It's not bad, but it's not great either.

As a rating I would give this a very high rental.

  • lol dey tried dat but dey lost da kids

  • Sam Elliot is BA. I don't they even bothered to tell him that it was a fantasy flick. I think it's just Sam Elliot being Sam Elliot :D .

He probably was just trying to say injins and got slurred to the point where he was saying gyptians.

  • Those polar bears were badass

  • You can't do His Dark Matrials as a movie, it's the way the books tell the story.

  • lol i fell asleep too

  • Agreed, I loved the books.

But the movie was just going so fast...

Only good part was when the bears fought XD

  • Comment removed

  • Some people are just to dumb to understand the storyline. First of all, it has nothing to do with atheism. However, if you think it has, you must definitelly read the book. It just encourages people to think for themselves. There can be relegion without the church also.

Secondmost of all, if you complain about talking animals: it's fantasy.

  • yeah it is kinda anti-religion, i mean, in the last book everybody goes to war against god and his angles lol.

  • Well said.

  • read the books, it makes a lot more sense

  • fricken athiests!!!! an athiest madde the book and only aathiests would watch this piece of crap

  • so what athiests arn't bad people

  • dont be suck a holier-than-thou fuckhole

  • !!!???/ english please mr muslim

  • OH LAWDY! You're so right!

  • at least atheist is not brainwashed by moronic books and does not believe in some imaginary beings.

  • like waht this book/movie is about retard!!!!!

  • For one thing, learn how to complete a sentence!

For another, the book AND movie make perfect sense to those who know the real truth beyond truth.

  • evil bitch is ancestor of ann coulter LOL. yeah.

  • Loved the books, though still havnt seen this film. May keep it that way.

  • its on youtube

  • it's ok, entertaining enough. the thing i didn't like about it was ms coulter. i think nicole kidman's usually pretty good but mrs coulter is supposed to be an extremely charming persin who draws people in but the moment she sets foot in the film she instantly has the evil bad guy with really bad unsubtle costume and hair look.

  • oh, and the fact the skipped EVERYTHING to do with religion!!

  • keep it that way

  • the only reason i wasnt mad about this movie was because the theater had it as a freebie so i was like why not! HOLY CRAP it s ucked and i thought the ending well made NO SENSE

  • I hated that movie.

It was all over the place and it felt like it was ripping too much stuff off for my taste

  • i'd give a full price because i read the books and i knew what the fuck was going on

  • For all you readers out there, you should give the book a try. Its much better in the way that the Harry Potter books are better.

  • read it and loved it...

  • not to mention that lil girl cunt act for shit!

  • i was trying so hard to like this movie but i couldn't and believe me i tried. when the movie ended, there was a moment of pause among my 2 friends in which i said "the movie sucked didn't it?". they grinned and agreed.

not a movie goers' kinda movie.

  • Sam Eliot is bad ass, honestly despite its controversy I didn't see anything blatantly offensive

  • This move was AWFUL, the voices were all wrong, the Polar bears should have been much bigger, The CGI was ok, but over all if yo have any respect for the books, you will hate this movie.

  • people was starting to leave theaters 45 minutes into the movie. and the average reviews all over were terrible.

  • We were in the same screening. What row were you in?

  • i'd give it a high matinee. The books are fantastic. but, although the visuals are amazing, the film didn't do the STORY any favours

the best bit was when the polar bears kicked the living crap out of each other.

what really annoyed me was the way they showed the Daemons dying because there should have been a dramatic explosion or something but there was this pathetic little *poof* and a tiny bit of sparkly glitter and I was thinking "oh man 2 hours of THIS!?"

  • this movie didnt do the book justice . the books are the bomb.

  • i'd say full price

  • Love the visuals and acting, but the story is a little too bland and dark in the film. Not to mention the ending, which was clearly made with the intent of a trilolgy that appears will never come to be.

  • I think everyone missed the real message. The movie helps brings to light the violent, inhumane world of underground polar bear fighting.

  • lmao nice one

  • Bad book. Christians kill this book

  • I don't agree that Christians should burn it, but as a fantasy book lover, I particularly hated this book and film. Fantasy lovers should burn it.

  • I would burn the movie, but not the books.

  • Some ol' bullshit!

  • I think the film's main problem is what alot of other fantasy novels adapted into films have - they miss the main point of the novel! It's an empty shell of a film, and didn't have enough balls to show the Magesterium and that deeper side of it.

  • exactly! the books are better by far.

  • the trouble with this movie also plagued the book as well. The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass are two of my favorite books ever, but Pullman had real hackneyed trouble for compass.

My suggestion is stay with the book series.

  • this movie was so confusing and boring

  • Careful now, if Al Sharpton gets wind of that monkey joke he may try to boycott or sue you guys! LOL.

    Great reviews as always!

  • this had some of the worst child acting I have ever seen

  • The books rocked, but the movie SUCKED.

  • The movie kind of sucked, but the fight between the polar bears was F@cking AWESOME!
