You've got this stuff in your soul! I always envied folks like yourself, just second nature to play anything you pick up. My oldest son has this gift too. You play great!
Could you perhaps direct me to a recording of Ward's version? Also, what exactly is your tuning here? Post some more of this stuff, would love to see some more clawhammer!
After talking with you last night, I worked out "Brother Ephram" another unissued Ward banjo solo and posted it as a video response. I hope you like it!
Wade Ward has been my favorite for about 35 years and you got it, Brother...I am envious...great picking (and singing) of a great tune...what tuning???
the tuning is essentially cumberland gap tuning, but cranked up to A. I can only imagine how wade ward got up there, as he doesn't seem the type to use a capo, but it seems like he must have for this one.
I believe it was in the liner notes of the High Atmosphere CD or maybe one of the County Clawhammer Vols.. They were comparing Fred Cockerham's drop thumb approach with Ward's and commenting on how varied the styles and techniques could be within a limited geographic context - even players that weren't hemmed up in an isolated mtn hollow. I think they also mentioned Sidna Meyers and Jarrell used to meet halfway on the Virgolina stae line and trade square dance set lists.
that's funny... i never quite thought about it that way, but it does make a peculiar kind of sense. do you remember where you came across that observation?
thanks - doc certainly found his way around on a banjo just fine without drop-thumb. this tune is probably do-able with an alternate technique, i just hear wade ward in my mind's ear as a drop-humb-heavy player.

What are you talking about snowy Joe. He's pretty much in time the whole way. Just jealous of his awesome clawhammer I suppose.

It's cumberland gap tuning, cranked up to A. if you did it without a capo, the tuning from the 5th to the 1st string would be:
a F-sharp B E F-sharp
if you tune the 5th string to A and then tune the other strings to DGCD and slap a capo on the 4th fret, you'll achieve the same result.

thanks very much for that. i've really been enjoying your videos.

I'm amazed..by the playing and the voice.
Banjo players would be tickled to death to play that clawhammer.
I believe I just subscribed.
Have a good one sir

I have a gig next wednesday with my stringband in the hague, you're invited, sir..
Frenk78rpm 3 years ago
and i'd take you up on it, if wasn't across an ocean, or something like that.
actually, i'm the last guy you'd want at a stringband gig - i always leave out the good notes!

Now that's how it's supposed to be done! I read somewhere that Ward used a lot of drop thumb but only on the 2nd string

putting aside the fact that banjos act like rasps on my eardrums - a great pleasure to see/hear another of your excellent videos.
