think they first played in a Scout Movement Show known has The Gang Show in the midlands all were members of the movement inc the girl who was a Cub Scout Leader the male singer came later.
This was a huge hit in San Antonio, but we had a DJ, Howard Edwards, who must have had connections to Australia and England, because we got a lot of the more obscure British groups in 1964. Howard was a legend in San Antonio on KONO AM 86.
UK 60s pop-beat band Birmingham UK, once described as "Solihull Sound", Al Jackson (lead vocals), Martin Baggott (lead guitar), Don Gould (organ), Phil Cash (rhythm guitar), Gerry Freeman (drums) and Megan Davies (bass); Freeman & Davies married in 1965 (courtesy Wikipedia); biggest hits “Tell Me When” '64 (UK#7); and Lennon/McCartney’s “Like Dreamers Do” '64 (UK#20) and Ray Davies' "I Go to Sleep" ’65; successfully worked the Cunard cruises for years - see also ‘THE APPLEJACKS MARRIAGE'
Wonderful follow-up to "Tell Me When". The Applejacks with a Lennon-McCartney song... it doesn't get much better than this!!
In the period from 1962 - 1964 the Beatles swamped the UK music arena with literally scores of hit songs that they generously and magnanimously gave away to other groups (even the Rolling Stones got their first hit with a Beatles' song!!) This Applejacks' hit is a good example. There are many, many other examples... you''ll even find a You Tube category for this!
I grew up in southeast Texas near Houston and the Applejacks never got airplay there. However, while visiting my cousins in San Antonio, I heard "Tell Me When" and it immediately grabbed me. We could faintly hear that S.A. station in Houston if the weather was just right. So, for weeks after returning home I had to settle for a fuzzy sounding version of the song. But it is so dynamite, it was worth it. Glad to say I've owned the 45 rpm on the London label for years. A much underrated group!
I've never heard of the Applejacks or this song, so I'm thinking this never got any airplay in the USA. But I have to say I love the song and think it should have been a hit. Speaking of British Invasion groups, has anyone heard of The Minutemen?
I agree, I think it would have been a huge hit here, I would have bought a copy. I'm guessing It had to have been a Beatles payola issue or whatever?Lennon/McCartney wrote it & recorded it. Honestly, they did a mega terrible job singing it, the Applejacks blew the Beatles away on this follow up tune. It's very strange why we never heard it here in the US, God forbid the Applejacks out doing the Beatles. I'll send you the Beatles version if you never heard it.
@NYDutch1968 Thanks to the wonder of modern communication, you are fortunate to get to hear this fantastic group. They got very limited airplay in the U.S. I grew up in Houston and we never heard a note of them. I heard them on a San Antonio station while visiting my cousins. The song was "Tell Me When" and it grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go! I searched out every Applejacks record I could find after that. Great, uplifting sound. Glad you are on board with the Applejacks!
I don't like the Beatles as people - drugs.. sex.. I only say that they created many interesting titles and the music - especially - from the studio period. Clear magic. You may not like them but please realize how strong is band's influence (easily to notice). Now today we have lots of bands.. except some older I would say there are all the same.. no living legend :D
I agree with what your saying, no doubt! They wrote some beautiful songs, I can't argue that, by no means. I think This Boy was a terrific song, nice harmonies. If they had stayed with that style, hey, I'd be posting them. Lennon, Women was a SUPER song, I love it, BEAUTIFUL song. Sad, when I just began to like him, he was shot. He stood 4 some good, I know. I just couldn't accept how they destroyed what guys like me loved as doowop & teen, plus, I didn't like their style of music, never will.
Ahhh, the Beatles, a sore spot for me. They took over our music in 1963. What a shame! Now, sadly, anything goes in America. The kids back then wanted something new and they got it!! The British invasion was a mild name. It should have been called the British takeover, because that is was took place back then. They killed all the good music and all the great groups. Nobody can deny that. Now, lets get back to the great tunes by Dowopper..................
The Beatles were the best this time! You can't say any word against McCartney's/Lennon's voice abilities - and that's the great part of the music - the music needed the revolution! Not just the melody itself is important. Applejacks simply remade this song and somehow credited it to themselves because Mcca found the song boring.
Just a matter of opinion my friend, Voice abilites, they were a dime a dozen. There wasn't anything great about their voices. It was their chords they played that made them different, not their voices. The music didn't need a revolution, it was doing just fine. The British ivasion introduced a whole new way of life in the US, by 1968 teens were so strung out on drugs it was pitiful! I wish the British stayed where they were. Life was easy in 62, clean & fun. The beatles played a huge part
on the coarse of this country, for the worst, not for the better. Some of my best friends love the beatles, some of my best friend think like I do, we hate them. Again, just a matter of opinion. We can go on 4ever, I'll never change you & you'll never change me. What made the beatles so popular, they just happened to get here first.
"The British ivasion introduced a whole new way of life in the US, by 1968 teens were so strung out on drugs it was pitiful! I wish the British stayed where they were. Life was easy in 62, clean & fun."
This guy is amazing! He is blaming the Brits for US social problems. We never had the problems the US had and we had more of the "British invasion" than you.
Two factors I consider. 1st, I didn't like there style in music eccept for one song, This Boy. 2nd, their invasion destroyed nearly every doowop group, teen groups & POP artists in this country. 1962-63-64 was the peak in this country, this was the day the music died. There is something about Americans, we love change whether it be good or bad, we crave it.
Just a matter of opinion, I hated the Beatles then and still do today. Dave Clark, Jerry & Pacemakers, there were a few good groups I liked, not crazy about, but not bad. The only song I ever liked by the Beatles was This Boy (SUPER great song) John Lennon I had just started to like when he did Women, unfortunately disaster happened.
Beatles were and are the best rock band in the world.
It's not scientific, it's just matter of opinion! U gave yours, I gave mine, now back to the music!
I also had some mixed feelings about the Brit bands, a do wop and early R&B lover. But when I asked some our older generation about their disdain for rock and roll, they said it was because rock and roll changed the whole social landscape in this country. Barn dances became a thing of the past. The early 50's rock was truly the most radical music to hit this country, although it seems tame now. The Beatles were just a phenom in that movement
I agree to some extent, however, Rock & Roll did change things in the US only into Poodle Skirts, black paints, leather jackets & mondo hair styles. The British gave us drugs, free movement & gay sex.
Having grown up in the early rock and roll, and R&B era, I can tell you that Americans did not need the Brits to give us drugs, as I recall, there was plenty around. The British Invasion was just a continuation of what had already started here; and just in time, I might add, the music had become "watered down," with the addition of orchestras, etc. The Beatles brought back the earthy, raw, pounding basics and reopened the door, and so on we went.
I appreceiate your opinin, however, I totally disagree. The music wasn't watered down. Americans love change! How do you think this guy we call a president got in office, Americans love change and when America gets their change the majority is normally wrong. The beatles didn't bring back anything all they had was a different chord change that American sheeple ate up, just a different sound with less talent than American groups. However, this is just my opinion, I hated them then & still do.

Your very welcome! I bought my 1st records because I had a paper route in the early 60s, I started out making about $5.00 a week, it was enough to buy some records. The biggest sales were when the British invasion hit. All these records were selling for 25 cents each, never forget it, Beacon Records had two 4 X 8 tables heaping with 45s for 25 cents each. Nobody wanted them except me I guess. I believe these sounds need to be known, I'll keep posting untill I run out, until then, enjoy!!
Nice---written by Lennon/McCartney. Lots of doo wop people think that British Invasion music isn't any good, and it's simply not true. The Proof is right here, like you say.
Thank you!!! Do you realize, that much of what I post was traded for Beatle 45s & Jackets. His name was Bob Sullivan, he owned a record store in Providence RI on Federal Hill. I would go there 2-3 nights a week. He would put all the Doowop & Teen stuff aside for me & trade for the Beatle stuff I found. Trust me when I say I had some MEGA rare Beatles. It was easier at the time 2 find the Beatles than what I was looking for. Anyway, what I traded is probably worth more now???
Well let's just say this. People pay really high prices for Beatles stuff, but the teen/doowop stuff couldn't possibly have a price tag, it's that good. I'm lucky that I know both genres of music, but a lot of people aren't so lucky!!
Another great tune from this group ... agree they are foot tappingly good ! Also agree the bass player is a lovely girl !

If you enter 'Tell Me When' The Applejacks on YouTube you should find the official video made by the band, and, there she is.
Her name is Megan Davis, the band came from Birmingham, England. They started out as friends in the same Scout troop, and formed the band in 1961.
1964 was their year, they had 3 Top 40 hits in Britain, but by 1965 they failed to chart.
They spent the rest of the 1960's working on Cunard cruise liners including QE 2.
Hope that helps amigo :-
