Rua, did you hear chief say anything to the crowd? He has never been on the sidelines leading cheers. He is not a mascot, but a symbol and a source of honor to many alumnus's of the university of Illinois. However, I could see how you could find this racist, but as a long time chief supporter, I hope you can see it's not just a dude running out in these dresses.
One thing is that it is nice to see a positive association with First Nations which is cheered by the crowds. Yet, it is still racist. How would you feel if in China for example, they had a mascot called "The American" where someone was running around with a turkey leg in one hand and a hand gun in the other, wearing an American Military styled uniform shouting profanities to the crowd for a cheer. Wouldn't you consider that offensive and request that they get a new mascot and let the old one go
THose professors and officials that brought down the Chief - why did they have to meet in a secret, undisclosed location on the southern tip of campus?
Thanks for this video. The people in this world who have nothing to do but be miserable and try to spread their misery will never be able to erase the Chief from our hearts. When will this madness end? Being offended by something or someone seems to be becoming our national pastime. If I am offended by their being offended, does that count for anything? And just who is offended? And what did they achieve by denying my son the chance to experience this amazing and stirring tradition?
As a former student athlete at the University I am very saddened that the NCAA and board of trustees have taken away a much TREASURED and RESPECTED symbol that embodies both DIGNITY, COURAGE and STRENGTH. I know that I, as well as many othere students both past and present will cherish our memories of the CHIEF. LONG LIVE THE CHIEF!!!
Chief Illiniwek embodies the attributes valued by alumni, students, and friends of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The tradition of the Chief is a link to our great past, a tangible symbol of an intangible spirit, filled with qualities to which a person of any background can aspire: goodness, strength, bravery, truthfulness, courage, and dignity.
I was at this game and I was really hoping it wouldn't be the last time I got to witness the Chief perform...but unfortunately it was. I haven't been this sad in a long long time. Memories of the Chief will always be in my heart.
