Was in Wichita recently heard real Bobby Stout on radio, heads Wichita Crime Commission. Met him in early 70s, he was a sharp dresser, reminded me of a TV detective (i.e., Peter Gunn, etc.) from the 1960s. May Jerry Wood rest in peace went to high school with him.
The version on Manfred Mann's Earth Band is the one I'm familiar with. It's killer too, but this version actually cuts it. Lane Tietgen was some kind of writer.
Knew these guys well, roadied for them for four days late in 1970, just long enough to figure out that the manager was insane, and get out. This was the only album AFAIK. My main roadie gig was with Sons of Champlin from 1968 to 2010.
Finnigan is now MD for Joe Cocker, was kind enough to get me into a show when they came around last year. He blogs on a popular website called Crooks and Liars, with a daily column called Mike's Blog Roundup.
I used to follow Mike's band Finnigan & Wood around Wichita clubs back in the day. I talked to Jerry Wood about a month before he passed away...mid to late 70's, I believe. Last year, Mike was at the House of Blues in Vegas with Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal (BonTaj Tour). After the concert he came out front to see me. It was so good to see him and hear him play live again after all these years. Mike is one of the most talented Blues singers and keyboard players you'll ever hear.
What a fabulous four piece group. There really was a Bobby Stout. These guys are mid-Americans legend. One of the early times to hear the legendary Mike Finnigan on vinyl. Thank you for this post.
@john9944 Cpt. Bobby Stout was Wichita's version of Sheriff Joe waaay back in the 60's and 70's.. This song was about his tough stance on weed! The dude comes to town with nuthin' but a pocketful of mexican smoke, sells to a cat who narcs him out....Mike Finnegan is a Legend! Jerry Wood passed in the early 90's...Peace!
These guys were slap crazy....and oh, so soulful ! Yes, yes...

Good, but I like Manfred Mann's Earth Band much better. But it's very interesting to hear where the song actually originated from.

Not surprised that Jerry Woods didn't live long.

This was very cool at the time. The vocal is still very cool. The rest of the recording, unfortunately to me, sounds a little dated.
I saw this band live in 1970. They were great.

Saw these guys back in the 70's in Indy. They were fantastic!!!
They were more memorable than the band they opened for cause I can't even remember who they were.
If anyone knows where to find this on CD let me know.
