  • He's incredible.

  • Bob Milne is a friend of mine. In addition to his joie de vivre, Bob is an oasis of knowledge on all things musical and quite possibly the kindest gentleman I've ever had the privilege to know and perform with! M.P.

  • I wanted to echo my thanks to Radiolab as well.

I feel like this is view into the future of what humans may evolve to become if we

    survive long enough!

  • Cool

  • Pure MAGIC!

  • Have to agree with everyone thanking Radiolab for introducing us to this mindboggling talent. Could he possibly drive his motorhome to Australia for a few shows?

  • funky sounding piano but the old boy needs pimping up somewhat.

  • Perhaps a guy who can juggle four symphonies in his head simultaneously can decipher what the hell is going on in Serial music.

  • Seriously, this dude can jam. Blew my mind.

Thanks Radio Lab! Hopefully he gets more bookings because of the exposure.

  • Among other things, I guess this is what you can achieve when you start young, and you don't get discouraged

  • Thank God! I mean literally. He's a gift to all mankind.

  • Remarkable talent - when I retire I'm going to play piano like this. Right! I can't even pat my head and rub my tummy.

  • This guy is just incredible.

  • This is the kind of music that makes me feel good! I just found out about this guy from radiolab, and then I saw in the end that this was filmed at the Arlington Heights Memorial Libarary--I go to that library!!!!! I wish that I'd have known about this when it happened.

  • 30 people can't keep track of 4 symphonies in their head...i mean...well i guess only bob can!

  • I too am grateful to WNYC's Radiolab for takin' me here!

  • 30 people are simply just not fans of this, obviously. i am not one of those 30.

  • beautiful, awsome, amazing, a gift! thank you for putting this up, what a joy! 30 people hit the wrong thumb by mistake, obviously.

  • Cheers to Radiolab for making me aware of this dude!

  • GREAT

  • I saw him at the Library in south Chicago - if you get a chance, don't miss it. Terrific story teller as wall - did some smokin' ragtime! And NO, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" is not a rag. :)

  • my family and I were blessed to be able to see Bob perform live tonight and he is wonderful! I would have loved to spend an evening in the 'old days' at some dive listening to him while partying with friends. Good times, good times...

  • where else but on YouTube could we have a chance to see such a great performer as long as we want?

  • you rock!!!

  • If there is a word to express my impression, it would be

    Fantasticallyamazingandsuperdupermarvelousbecauseithinkyoumademyjawdropsonowyouhavetopayforit.

  • Un mito..

  • man this guys good

  • I love Bob's piano and attended a couple of his piano camps.

  • The guy thumps his feet. Acts very strange.

  • @skalnekford2 to help with the counting.

  • Brilliant!

  • Great Boogie music

  • thats not rag time wtf.

  • @kennyispoor You let the title throw you off. It is only stating that he is a Ragtime/Boogie-Woogie Pianist. In the description it says, "Pianist Bob Milne performs some Boogie-Woogie. He plays ragtime, but not in this video.

  • He reminds me of my earlier boogie trial and error-teach-myself and expanding all the time...but same progressions...a-a-h-hhh to be 30 again....the boogieman (40yrs ago)

  • He reminds me of my earlier boogie trial and error-teach-myself and expanding all the time...but same progressions...a-a-h-hhh to be 30 again....

  • i heard something like alligator crawl (by fats waller) excellent

  • God - I wish I'd had this guy as my music teacher instead of that old psychopath Dusty Rhodes who managed to turn us all off music for a while - some forever. If Mozart decided to come back in another reincarnation he would probably have been Elton John ... hmm... maybe he is.

  • Master !!!

  • My grand father play like that and its not joke its so amazing :) He has the same style of Bob Milne !!! I think the boogie-woogie its one of best song ever :)

IT'S the real music of all time :)

  • I like your deadpan, but you still know what an f7 is.

  • so i'm planning to win the lottery next week iv got my numbers picked out and i'm planning on a big house, AC Cobra parked out front and this guy in my front room just tapping away boogie woogie all day long, anyone wana come round????

  • @garbage106 ... I like your idea. Sign me up :)

  • GENIAL

  • this guy is a hoss at piano, i bet he got major &*^% back in the day.

i wish i could play like this

  • you´re very good man

  • I saw Bob play the other day. I'm not sure he's all there to tell the truth. Certainly a singular guy.

  • You are the most man. What a terrific tallent. Boggie is the best of all jazz to my mind. You just can't stop those feet tapping.

  • Jovel! spitzenklasse!!

  • Or Mozart! Even better. Mozart's Boogie Woogie Symphony in C major. Wow. Insomnia makes you insane. 04:30 and 16 degrees outside.

  • Haha! Bach was a master at the keyboard. I'll bet he would have been fascinated by boogie rythms. I don't think boogie would be so hot on the harpsichord though. I can imagine what he would have done with this music not that it needs his help, but it's fun to imagine. Maybe he would have been known as Rockin'Bach.

  • @sosome57 -- are you kidding?

    .

Boogie sounds COOL on the harpsichord.

    .

Dunno if Bach would have liked it, but his sons would have gone wild if they'd heard it at the right age!!

  • albert einstein

  • @sayalaperbandel

Sad.... Albert Einstein (not albert einstein) was the greatest physicist, not musician ....

  • Mistrzluq

the title is Ragtime/Boogie-Woogie Pianist Bob Milne, and not greatest musicean. its conected with einstein because einstein is musicean to. i am sory, my english not good enought

  • This is not quite 'pure' Boogie Woogie IMO.

He's added and changed so much its turned it more picsticato jazz

  • not loud enough, but fascinating, especially the facial expressions at the beginning

  • 0:35 what kind of term is that called in playing piano? Ostinato?

  • Ostinato means accompanying with a repeating background melody, harmony or rhythm, which is indeed is very common in boogie-woogie. But that right there was simply a rapid repetition of notes: a tremolo.

  • OH THX!

  • albert ammons.

who's this guy here and where's albert?

  • nope, not gettin it

  • Bob is tremendeous as a performer of rags, but what he's doing here ain't the spirit of the real boogie woogie, for such listen to Albert Ammons and co., Silvan Zingg, Eeco(freakyhead20), HampGoesWild, well, you get the picture.

No hard feelings, guys. A guy who charges 390bucks per 3hours piano lessons should know better.

  • Disagree. The boogie woogie feel is totally there.

  • I said summtin' sacrilegeous, did I. Using and grooving along with all the right elements added loosely on a string without making them into a stand alone piece is not what makes a boogie woogie. Them ole masters did give us whole, structured pieces, not just loosely added elements as here. But what do we argue, feel free to enjoy what you want, Jacques, YOU do play the real stuff the REAL way it should be played and j'aime your live performances very much. Keep it up.

  • j adoreeeeeeeeeee

  • He just made my woogie boogie!

  • Mr Milne, I'm still here and swooning. When I grew up Boogies were going out of style. Ergo, I missed a lot of music that was touching my heart. Over the years I collected a few goodies that I will treasure 'til my end. But seeing Artists like you perform on my PC is heaven. Thanks again, Fred

  • Having heard and seen you play, my heart is just jumping for joy. I should be in bed by now, but I have to listen to you one more time ere I turn in. Thank you for a great time tonight. Fred

  • Can you believe he never even had a piano lesson. I have lunch with Bob from time to time. AMAZING TALENT.

By the way, he is a pool shark. Do not play this man for money. He will take you to the woodshed.

  • That's great Boogie

  • it feels like i'm take a jazz course again for school with the music

  • That aint no rag time! Thats Boogie Woogie !

  • Left brain,,,, Right brain,,, I can't tell,,,Much less play it. That's one class I need.

  • 1:53-2:36 sounds like he is making it up lol

    Good though =]

  • He's so synchopated, it sounds as if he's lost it- then he brings it back home safe for you. Very fluid and easy, damn!

  • Well its 95% boogie,5% blues(was in one frase)

    but not Ragtime.

And didnt get what is it if its a lesson its too mutch even 4 me 0o. and if its concert he plays not full what he can^^

  • Wow! He makes that look so easy! Fantastic!

  • There is snow on the roof, but plenty of life in the fingers!

  • amazing! cant say eny other words! realy amazing!

  • Amazing :)

  • Geezer's given us a masterclass. End of.

  • benweston

    Its Bob Milne.

Have you never heard of him ?

He will always be better then U.

  • The dude can play.

  • I think his play is clean and really good. I am a guitar player so I can only relate to how it feels and not the technical side so much. He is having fun, to heck with the odd bit of timing.

  • è incredibilmente fantasticooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=)

  • Text-book, standard playing, something anyone with a bit of skill and Grade 4 could master. Boring, standard progressions and samey licks. Nothing original in this whatsoever. I remember playing a piece very similar to this for my Grade 4 examination piece when I was 14.

  • But could you do it whithout looking at the keys ?

  • I should bloody well hope so, I'd be a crap player if I had to look at the keys I'm playing!

  • benweston,

In the introduction, he was clearly doing it for an audience of theory students. This was probably just for an idea of ragtime progressions.

  • Yup, fair enough. I do understand that. It's just that lots of people are saying how outstanding this particular playing is and, really, it isn't. But yes, I get your point.

  • At 2:26 his face = Jimmy page

  • A Master.

  • is that piano pedal powered? dude looks like he's riding a bike! great music tho - really nice control of the balance - loads of the others have way to much of the boring ass LH going on

  • wow you are a great example of someone with a mental handicap

  • Meneer, u heeft ut door!!!!

  • That was awesome

I wish ii could play like that

  • i love this man....

  • 好

  • This is great! Very nice playing and kick ass drive.

  • Hey Bob, this is great! I was just listening to your Ragtime, Blues and Boogie album that I bought from you way back in the days of the Toronto Ragtime Society. Glad to hear you're still pounding the ivories and doing a fine job!

    Ross

  • really good to see you play again after all these years

  • realy good to see you play after all these years, always loved it

  • awsome perfomance!! love it!!

  • Bob Milne is a good friend of mine. It is such a pleasure to listen to this man play. His stories are even better. If you get a chance, go see him in person.

  • The only thing poor is your spelling.

  • It's technically,,tecnally is not a word, nor is armonically. What does it matter if he is rich or poor? Oh, you mean he is technically poor in his playing. You really need to go back to school and learn how to spell and write before you talk about something advanced like music.

  • Rick, you idiot. It's a demonstration of rhythm styles including syncopation. It is in fact technically and harmonically brilliant.

  • and there is the proof ladies and gentleman, Richard is in fact an ignorant moron.

  • can you do any better? and if you can show proof.

  • hey if you dont like this kind of music , why do you have to search for it and write stupid comments?? Its swing like hell this tune! Kepp on boogie Bob! :D

  • Good luck with your piano skills Richard! ;)

  • What the hell are u talking about? :)

  • LOL, Man I Could Take You Seriously, But I Think Your Funny Enough.

  • What would Bach have called it at 00:34?

A subdominant seventh with a flattened ninth, probably ;)

  • extra

  • wow

  • This dude has a lot of seat time !! great job !!!

  • great

    love it

    rock and roll

  • Hmmm...I Hear Way More Boogie-Woogie Then Ragtime.

  • the root of jazz beginnings =)

  • You have got to love ragtime, especially this guy.

  • A-MAZING!!!!!

    i love it

  • WOW!!!

  • very very exciting to say the least.

  • hes a happy man, cant you see. lol.

  • woow

  • Mmmm thats what I like to hear!

  • Ah, I saw this guy a handful of years ago, he's quite funny. He did mostly ragtime though, only a little bit of boogie, and I'm sure he can do some other styles as well.

  • How sweet is this old timer? And he's good too. Lovely.

  • At his concerts, its an enjoyable evening on the historyofourAmerican Ragtime which all other styles in a way descended from.Ragtime doesn'tmean Joplin, albeit a father of genre, but the timing, thatwasn't pure to a classical musician in the eighteen hundredsthey labeled it ragged time, shortened to ragtime. The terms boogie woogie, jazzetc are according then t Milne ragtime, and he quotes L Armstrong as sayingthey didn't know of all these terms like jazz and blues, theycalled it all ragtime.

  • If you liked his concert, you should have lunch with the man. His life is a story in and of itself. This guy has been all over the world and done just about everything you can imagine.

I lunch with him from time to time and he simply amazes me.

Oh, and he plays piano pretty well too. Especially for a man who has never had a piano lesson!

  • is the pedal used a little much, or am i mistaken there?

  • mmm i didnt think so... matter of preference i guess... could be the sound quality of the clip that's making the piano sound a little fuzzy?

  • If you wanna hear a one hundred year old piano and bad recording quality to make a big fuzz check out my videos lol, I don't need to use much pedal with our piano for resonance. Btw great video, poster!

  • What every you call it, it is still GOOD!

  • so when will you be performing in California?...bring it on! :-) kat

  • Astonishing! Bravo - more Bob Milne please! Just LURVE that boogie-woogie sound.

  • It's not a rag !!

  • yeah, I'd agree this shouldn't be labeled ragtime, he's a great player knows his stuff, but this isn't ragtime.

  • If this is ragtime, I'm Queen Elisabeth II !!!!!!!!!

  • i agree with ragnar, nice but not ragtime piano. it worth seeing it! so english ;)

  • I am familiar with Mr. Milne, who has appeared at many ragtime festivals (among other things), and (if I'm not mistaken) is a very fine ear player. He DOES play ragtime, however here he is definitely playing boogie-woogie (another of his specialties) in the manner of Jimmy Yancey etc. So, this should be changed to read "boogie-woogie piano"

  • I agree, boogie woogie, not ragtime, but what a wonderful performer! :)

  • Yancey is turning over in his grave.

    Gorsegrower

  • very cool!

    ragtime mark birnbaum

  • Pretty good, but this is Boogie Woogie Piano I would say, not Ragtime.

  • Lol...reminds me of that kids movie "The Mouse and the Motorcycle", based on the Beverly Cleary book under the same name. Check it out and you'll know what I mean.

  • Reallyy nice!Maybe not totally ragtime, but it sounds great!

  • Very nice! But the tag is off -- this is NOT ragtime piano.

  • nice

  • kick ass
