notice football doesn't use yard lines.  in american football, yard lines are used to measure the distance from the touchdown LINE. yes, the touchdown has a line exactly across the entire SIDE of a map, yet the goal takes a much smaller PART OF A LINE. So, notice the capitals. If we put yard lines in football, we'd have yard ARCS, because the distance to the goal, and not the end of the pitch, varies the more you move to the longer edges of the field.

It's hard to play already with all the yard lines because if you get fouled in a PK zone it's going to be hard for the ref to tell if it really is a PK or not. And it has happened a lot. But then it's easy to tell how far a goal was made from. Don't get me wrong though, I have respect for American Football, it's just Football is my native sport. <3

@ECGELSV Technically, it can be 100 yards. That is the minimum length a football pitch is allowed to be. You can even have a square pitch, since 100 yards is the maximum the width can be. No pitch can ever be160 yards long though, so I've no idea where you're getting 80 yards to the half way line from. The maximum is 130 yards. You can work Villa's shot out from the fact that the area extends 18 yards from the goal line. Either way, Alonso versus Luton or Beckham against Wimbledon are better.

i gave this to my 10th grade geometry class and they solved it quicker than you guys :) each patch of grass is 6 yds (three of them make the 18) so villa is about 39 yds from the endline when he plays the ball. if he played it STRAIGHT AHEAD that would be a 39 yard goal, but he plays it on a diagonal. he is about 28 yards offcenter (estimating 10 yards beyond the side edge of the 18, which is 18 yards offcenter). 28^2 + 39^2 = c^2 and c = 48ish. leave math for the smart people & stick to soccer!

The distance is at least double that, and if you add in the fact it's on a diagonal the distance must be 40-45 yards.
